Shaw, The Impact of Synergy on IT Portfolio Selection, An earlier version of this paper is forthcoming in the proceedings of ICIS 2009, Phoenix, AZ (Track: IT Strategy and Leadership) This paper examines how firms can enhance synergy to optimize their IT portfolios. We begin by developing a framework for IT portfolio selection by identifying different types of IT synergy. Next, we examine the effect of different types of synergy on the IT portfolio selection by using this framework. The analysis in this paper establishes that firms with higher risk-tolerance levels are more likely to obtain superior IT portfolio options by enhancing IT synergy, whereas firms with lower risk-tolerance levels are less likely to benefit from enhancement of IT synergy. 2. Kim, The Burden of Proof in Electronic Commerce Security Breaches and the Optimal Security Investment of Firms, Submitted to Information Systems Research This study investigates the consequences of two alternative legal systems on e-commerce security in terms of the burden of proof. The paper analyzes corollaries of the two alternative e-commerce regulations by comparing the profits of e-commerce firms and their optimal levels of investment in security. We find, based on our analytical models, that in a market in which the efficiency of the security investment is high, a legal framework that imposes the burden of proof on the firm enables firms to achieve higher profits than a legal framework that places the onus on the customer in equilibrium. In addition, we find that, depending on the range in efficiency of security investments of a market, the e-commerce law that imposes the burden of proof on the firm can lead firms to be more profitable, even when the firms invest less in security in equilibrium, compared with firms under the law that imposes the burden of proof on the customer. 3. Subramanyam, On the Credibility of Enterprise Software Quality Vendorspeak: An Analytical Framework, Will be Submitted to Information Systems Research very soon We develop an analytical framework to investigate whether vendors of enterprise systems have an incentive to invest for high quality software. Software quality is often unobservable at the stage of the purchase deal between a customer and a vendor. In this study, we investigate strategic behaviors of customers and software vendors, highlighting unique characteristics of the enterprise systems market. We consider two different market settings: a monopoly and a competitive market. Our study finds that, in the competitive market, an investment equilibrium exists even when customers are uninformed about quality. Thus, customers can trust the vendor s talk of high quality. Our proposition provides the conditions when the vendor has an incentive to invest for high quality software. However, in the monopoly market, our analysis finds that vendor s claim of high quality is not credible. 4. R. Subramanyam, W. Cho, and M.S. 3 on Software Engineering soon In this paper, we investigate drivers of customer satisfaction in IT outsourcing services. Using data collected on 185 outsourcing agreements from a leading global vendor of IT services, we analyze the effect of several quality drivers across different levels of overall satisfaction. We use the Quality-Function-Deployment framework to generate service supply implications for IT service providers. We found that delivery within the estimated cost is the key driver that makes non-satisfied customers satisfied.
