Hospitality Ministries Annual Report 2014 Hospitality House Haven of Hope Hospitality Heights Solomon s Porch The Harbor After serving the homeless for over 30 years, we thought it appropriate to start our first official Annual Report with a few questions. What is a homeless shelter? Why have a homeless shelter? Who is at the center of it? In simplest terms, we provide a safe place to stay and fill basic needs, but our mission extends far beyond that. We strive to create a home, a family, for those without one, a place where Christ is the center, and His Love shines through all that we do. Many of the people Haven of Hope opened doors for me with things I who come to us have no experiences of a loving never thought possible. Being here helps me stay family. They are broken by the circumstances of life clean. It has brought me closer on my journey to and need support to find value in themselves before living with my children because I was not with they can move forward to support themselves. That them the last four years due to drug use. Haven is exactly what God calls us to do each day, and we of Hope is a beautiful place to call home. It has cannot lost sight of that. If we aren t showing those given me a good start on my long, clean sobriety we serve who Christ is, we are failing at the mission journey. He gave us. - Maria Surita, Resident, Haven of Hope What does it take to run a homeless shelter? We need strong people who are committed to this ministry in order to keep it operating. We also need funding. The expenses involved in operations may surprise some of you. We felt that this was an appropriate time to share what those expenses are, where our current funding comes from, what we accomplished in 2014, and what our goals are for the coming year. We also want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who support our ministry, not just financially, but also with prayer and donations of physical items and your time. We couldn t do this without you! We pray for God to bless you for all that you do! We received a $25 check this quarter from Fred Meyer s Community Rewards program. At you can link your card to donate a portion of all purchases to Hospitality Ministries - nonprofit org # Your personal Fred Meyer rewards are not affected. You can also support us with purchases on Amazon. Go to smile.amazon.com/ch/ to start donating.5% of eligible purchases. 1
Hospitality Ministries - Overview Here is an overview of 2014 combined costs compared to funding. We will break this down by ministry in the pages to follow. Hospitality House During 2014, Hospitality House provided emergency shelter for 364 men (25,675 bed nights), over 1,000 hot meals a month, and clothing for both residents and non-residents. The House also operates our Hospitality House Calls ministry, delivering food to families in need. The figures below give details about our expenses and funding. It cost about $15 a day for each person we provided housing for in This is only possible because of the amazing team we have operating this facility. Our managers all live at the Hospitality House, and most work for small stipends that amount to somewhere around $1/hour. We could not keep the doors open without these guys! We have been running a cardboard recycling service out of the Hospitality House for several years. This provides jobs for our recycling team and funding for the ministry. In 2015, we would like to expand our service to cover the entire valley up to and including Leavenworth. You can contact Kurt Betancourt, our Executive Director and Cardboard Manager with any questions or ideas at
Haven of Hope The Haven of Hope provided shelter and meals for 82 women and children (8,131 bed nights) in This program offers a safe place to overcome addictions and make steps to move forward in life: building relationships with God and other women, finding employment, becoming selfsufficient. As you can see, our funding fell far short of covering expenses in 2014, but we have been working with the ladies who live at the Haven to help with job searches, increasing employment, making a positive impact on our ability to keep the Haven funded. Though program fees should increase in 2015, we need help to keep the Haven moving forward and appreciate all of you who faithfully give to this ministry! Hospitality Heights We want to officially announce our new Director of the Haven, Kathy Blauman, and Jane Grebel, our House Manager. We are so blessed to have them running the Haven! Hospitality Heights provided transitional housing for 23 people (5,114 bed nights) in Beyond housing, we offer a program of restoration, seeking to offer services to help our clients address the circumstances that made them homeless and become self-sufficient. We are partnering with Serve Wenatchee Valley to offer mentoring for the families we serve. There is a constant waiting list for the Heights. We would love to expand our services by purchasing additional units as funding becomes available. 3
The Harbor As many of you are aware, the basement of Solomon s Porch was remodeled to be a youth shelter. As this 8 bed facility reached readiness, we found that staffing costs to offer housing to minors were too high to allow us to open. We have been trying to determine the best way to utilize the beautiful facility, and we finally have an answer to share with you. We are launching a new program called The Harbor - a safe place for homeless young men, ages We will provide intensive Robert Jackson mentoring and help to continue their education and/or obtain employment Residential Manager to become self-sufficient. They will also be working at Solomon s Porch as rjacksonhospitality partial payment for this Robert Jackson, who has been serving as a House Manager at the Hospitality House, as well as a driver for our cardboard recycling service, moved into the basement as our Residential Manager, and we just moved in our first resident. We are very excited to see what God is going to do! We haven t forgotten our goal of opening a shelter to serve homeless youth. We are also working on a potential partnership with a group that plans to create a drug and alcohol treatment facility for young people in Wenatchee. Please continue to pray for all that God is doing. We know he has big plans for the youth of this valley, and we want to be involved in whatever direction He is leading! HandUp Hospitality Ministries is excited to announce our new partnership with HandUp, an organization based out of San Francisco that offers a web-based service where our clients can launch direct funding campaigns to meet specific needs. You can visit to view profiles for our members. Two ladies from the Haven of Hope were the first to utilize this service: Lisa is an artist who raised money for computer equipment to post her artwork online to start her own business. Jerica is a young mother who needed a double stroller and car seat for her new baby. Both ladies already met their goals! We are so excited for them! We will be posting more profiles in the near future and invite you to check them out. 4
Solomon s Porch Solomon s Porch provides hot meals to youth, ages We provide a safe place to spend their afternoons and offer help finding jobs, drug and alcohol treatment classes, and other services. We are so thankful for the generous support of the Community that is committed to keeping this ministry open! With the addition of The Harbor alongside Solomon s Porch, we have restructured the leadership team. Currently, Robert Jackson, Residential Manager at The Harbor, is working with Solomon s Porch youth in the Stephanie Lewis evenings. We are actively looking for a Program Manager who will focus Administrative Manager on scheduling and recruiting volunteers and working with youth Stephanie Lewis, Hospitality Ministries Administrative Manager, is stephanie@hhmwen.org working out of Solomon s Porch during the day to focus on communication, fundraising, and other administrative work. We also brought back the Kitchen Manager position to work with our dinner teams and cook when no one is scheduled. We want to thank Boni Fletcher for managing, reorganizing, and providing training for our next Kitchen Manager. Please contact us with any questions, concerns, or if you would like to get involved. Boni Fletcher Kitchen Manager Solomon s Porch Office info@acts512.org As you can see, Solomon s Porch is doing very well financially. We have had several projects on hold due to lack of funding, and we have been praying for God to lead us and show us how to move forward with this ministry. 5

Coordinated Entry Many agencies in Chelan and Douglas Counties have been working together on a system to streamline the process people go through when experiencing homelessness. It can be difficult to navigate the various agencies available to help, and for many, the process is overwhelming. As community members, most of us do not know how to advise those caught in this difficult situation. One requirement on Hospitality Ministries for receiving grant funding is to help develop and implement a coordinated entry system, so anyone facing homelessness can call a single number and be directed to the agency that should be the best fit for their needs. After many meetings over many months, we are very close to a solution! We are excited to share the details as they are finalized. For now, we just wanted to let you know that this is one area we invested significant time in 2014, and the results should be unveiled soon. Feel free to stephanie@hhmwen.org with any questions about Coordinated Entry. 6
Social Enterprise We want to find more business solutions to fund our ministries to reduce our reliance on donations and grants. Our Cardboard Recycling enterprise has helped funding significantly in 2014 and should continue to grow. Here is another concepts we are working on: Bed Bug Eradication - Heat Treatment Service We were awarded a $28,000 grant to purchase heat treatment equipment, to treat our facilities and offer this service to the community. We received our first heater package and have begun testing it at the Hospitality House. As soon as we test it with a generator, we will order three additional heater packages, allowing us to treat four rooms at a time. We are excited to be so close to launching our service! We project that this will bring in additional revenues this year to help us bridge the gap between expenses and funding. We still need a generator to operate our service. We are working to borrow/rent a generator until we can purchase one, but there is very limited availability, so it will be difficult to schedule jobs before we have our own. If anyone has a generator we can use or buy, please let us know. If you hear about anyone having problems with bed bugs anywhere in the Valley, please send them our way. Haven of Hope saved my life. Kathy, Jane, and Lisa are like Mothers that I never had. I have consistency here. It makes such a difference in my life. I am in Bible study and now know the Holy Spirit and I want the same for my daughter someday. I am hoping to be able to pass my faith on to her. I am a drug addict and was living here and then had to go into detox. I am now back and am so grateful to have a place to lay my head and to have people tell me good morning each new day. The smallest things in life I am so thankful for. Hugs mean a lot and so does food and acceptance. I have a family here which is something I never had. I appreciate the people who donate so much to the Haven for our benefit. The Haven of Hope gives hope to people every day. Now I have hope for my children and grandchildren. - Jacquelina Valdez, Resident, Haven of Hope Hospitality Falls 7
