1 The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia Diocese of Christchurch Parish of Burnside-Harewood Job Description Youth Pastor CONCEPT: HOURS: REPORTS TO: Overseeing youth ministry in Red, Orange and Green Zones 23 hours per week (includes 5 hours Team Leader for 24-7 YouthWork in Burnside High School see Addendum to Job Description) Vicar, and in the absence of the vicar, the Churchwardens FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: The Vicar, Wardens, Vestry, Young people (aged 11-18) and their parents, Volunteer Youth Leaders, Children s Pastor, Children s and Young Person s Safety Officer (CYPSO)

2 CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS The Youth Pastor shall be a person who:- - Is a disciple of Jesus Christ and a positive Christian role model - Is committed to our core values of Biblical Teaching, Prayer and Discernment, being Christ-Centred and Spirit-Led. - Shares our vision for the parish as a loving community empowered for God s mission - Sees potential in young people from all backgrounds - Is able to empower a team of passionate volunteers - Has proven experience in youth work - Communicates clearly with young people, parents, colleagues and the wider parish. - Manages time and resources effectively KEY TASKS AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS KEY TASKS PERFORMANCE STANDARDS 1. NEOS (6 hours per week) Orange Zone Youth Group for Y9-Y Be the team leader to the Neos Youth group which currently runs on Thursday evening 7-9pm. 1.2 Resource, encourage and support existing youth leaders team and ongoing recruitment of new team members. 1.3 Empower leaders to journey with young people from a range of different backgrounds, including young people invited through 24-7 programme at Burnside High School. Programme run for high school youth weekly during term time Youth leaders active in Youth Ministry programme, receiving appropriate support and resources. Group is inclusive to young people from a range of backgrounds. Appropriate pastoral support given to young people and young people referred to other sources of help where necessary. 1.4 As a regular part of the programme, provide opportunities for young people to hear and respond to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Material faithful to the Gospel and appropriate to the range of young people in the group. Those who are not yet disciples engaged creatively with the Gospel Those who have chosen to become disciples encouraged to follow Jesus more closely

3 1.5 Lead Neos group to Easter Camp (Overtime is paid for this part of the job description as per the employment agreement) 1.6 Opportunity to take young people to other Christian camps as agreed with vicar. EMMAUS Green Zone Discipleship Group for Y10-Y13 (4 hours per week) 2.1 Re-launch a discipleship group for young people in Y10-Y13 Suggested time for this group is Sunday pm before our evening service during school term 2.2 Establish a group that draws on our core values of Biblicalteaching, Christ-centred, Spirit- Led, and Prayer and Discernment. 2.4 Maintain good links with young adults ministry. Group up and running by second week of Term 2. Young people empowered to read the bible for themselves. Young people basing their life on the example of Christ. 3. ICE Green Zone programme for Y7-Y9 (6 hours per week) 3.1 In consultation with the Children s Pastor lead a Sunday morning programme for young people in Y7-Y Establish a group culture that draws on our core values of Biblical-teaching, Christ-centred, Spirit-Led, and Prayer and Discernment. 3.3 Develop appropriate ways to encourage wider participation in the ICE programme. This could be through one-off social events or a programme. Young people growing in their awareness of the power of the Holy Spirit Young people encouraged to pray and helped to discern truth from error Graduating youth transition well into involvement with young adults group or other ministries. Existing young people at 10.15am service incorporated into group. Young people learning how to read the bible. Young people encouraged to make choices based on the example of Christ. 4 4. ACCOUNTABILITY AND ADMINISTRATION (2 hours per week) 4.1 Report and be accountable to the Vicar or Vicar s nominee (fortnightly) as agreed 4.2 Report to vestry quarterly on current activities and future plans, including any areas for concern. Fortnightly meetings and good relationships maintained. Written reports received by vestry by Friday before meeting. Plus report in person 3 times per year. Good working relationships maintained. 4.3 Participate in staff meeting and monthly prayer meeting 4.4 Take all practical steps to ensure personal safety and the safety of others. Ensure risk assessments are carried out, approved by CYPSO and circulated to youth leaders prior to youth activities. Keep risk assessments on record to be accessed as required. 4.5 Write an incident report for any incident or disclosure at a youth activity threatening the safety of a young person. Send a copy to CYPSO as soon as possible, 4.6 In consultation with the CYPSO ensure youth leaders are fully aware of and trained regarding all relevant health and safety and child protection policies. 4.7 Maintain financial records within the budget set by Vestry, and provide the treasurer with records on a quarterly basis. 4.8 Undertake training/development from time to time that is appropriate to the role as agreed with the Vicar/Wardens. Attends and contributes to meetings. Good working relationships maintained. Risk assessments produced, approved, circulated, adhered to and filed. Be familiar with any identified hazards on the sites where you work. Incident reports written and sent to CYPSO. Youth leaders receive training about health and safety and child protection annually. Records maintained, GST receipts provided, and budget adhered to. Training is relevant to the work outlined in this job description, and enhances the ability to at all times act as an ambassador for Christ and a good role model for the youth with whom you work

5 ADDENDUM TO JOB DESCRIPTION 24-7 YW PROGRAMME BURNIDE HIGH TEAM LEADER Function: 1. To lead, champion and work alongside the youth workers to ensure pastoral support and professional development is occurring with the youth worker(s). 2. Strengthen the relationship with the school on a personal level but also ensuring accountability, evaluation and reporting is occurring. 3. Being connected in the youth leadership team by advocating, championing and bridging the gap between the church and school. Continually sharing the vision of the school relationship with the church. 4. Being the youth workers voice at regional hub meetings and attending national training. Reports to: Primary Accountability: Vicar of Parish of Burnside-Harewood Burnside Community Transformation Trust Trustees Youth Pastor Management Team Secondary Accountability: School Principal 24-7 YouthWork Network Coordinator Funding Providers Relationships: 24-7 YouthWork Burnside Youth Worker Team Youth Pastor of Local Churches involved School Administration and Senior Pastors of Local Churches Wider 24-7 Network Managers Council staff and liaison officers Funding providers and their contacts BCTT Trustees Skills Required: Leadership skills to be able to lead a team of youth workers Administration skills to be able to report, liaise and supervise a range of people Ability to relate to and be accepted by a wide range of people Clear written and oral communication skills Ability to manage own time and priorities Ability to organise and manage projects Ability to develop a team around them Specific Duties Include but not limited to: Pastoral: Meet with each youth worker 1-on-1 regularly. Bring the team together regularly to communicate, plan and review activities. Ensure youth workers have adequate external supervision and support

6 Pastorally care for and develop youth workers, including extra training if necessary Collecting and feeding back the question of the term. Run an annual retreat for the 24-7 Burnside youth work team. In School: Build a relationship with the school senior staff. Be the main contact person for the school staff contact. Responsible for 24-7YW developments on the ground. Developing strategies in the school with the youth workers and keeping them focused on agreed timelines. Communicate plans, goals and timelines to the school contact. Provide term reports and measurable outcomes to the school, meeting with the senior staff to present the activities regularly. Supervise volunteers within the school. Attend community liaison meetings with the Christchurch City Council Fendalton-Waimairi Ward. Select/Interview new or potential youth workers with a Trust member and the Youth Pastor of the local church. Church: Part of the youth leadership team. Sharing vision and values of 24-7 YouthWork with church leadership. Facilitating prayer support for the youth workers. Raising church awareness of the work in schools. Report to contributing churches quarterly on the youth worker activities. Network: Attend team leader meetings for the Christchurch Hub. Attend cluster meetings for the North-West schools and youth workers. Attend 24-7 YouthWork National Training. Attend the termly regional breakfasts for the 24-7 YouthWork Canterbury network. Maintain relationship with the Christchurch City Council local staff. Trust Activities Assist the Trust Administrator in applying for funding for programme and associated reporting. Complete quarterly reports to the BCTT Board. Attend BCTT trustees meetings when required. Personal Attributes: Shares and lives the Gospel of Jesus Christ as a positive Christian role model in both attitude and lifestyle. Has the abilities and vision needed to lead a team of youth leaders and to plan for the future. Has suitable knowledge, skills, values, spirituality and life experience to relate to young people. Communicates clearly with colleagues. Is a faithful steward of the resources and ministry invested to them. Interested in personal and spiritual development

7 BACKGROUND RED, ORANGE AND GREEN ZONES Since linking in with the 24-7 YouthWork programme at Burnside High School 5 years ago, our youth ministry has been based on the concept of Red, Orange and Green Zones. These are explained diagrammatically below. In broad terms, these zones may be described as follows:- RED School-based youth work and other programmes where the gospel is not overtly shared. ORANGE Young people who show interest in the gospel but have not made a commitment to follow Christ. GREEN Young people who have made a decision to follow Christ. The youth pastor is responsible for overseeing youth ministry in these different zones. Young people from green zone are encouraged to assist in sharing the gospel with their friends in the orange zone youth workers intentionally work in red zone programmes and invite young people to orange zone programmes
