The award was preseted i October at the Fall Semiaual Meetig of the America Associatio of Colleges of Nursig (AACN). Dr. Nadie Coudret, dea of the College of Nursig ad Health Professios, ad Reee Dugger, istructor i ursig, atteded the meetig i Washigto, D.C., to accept the award. The baccalaureate-level curricular iovatio award was established by AACN ad the Joh A. Hartford Istitute to recogize ursig programs that demostrate a strog commitmet to geriatric ursig. New Ceter for Healthy Agig ad Welless established A ew Ceter for Healthy Agig ad Welless i the College of Nursig ad Health Professios focuses o the eeds of older adults. The ceter will be ivolved i research, health promotio, ad commuity outreach. Dr. Mary Catherie Ehlma, assistat professor of gerotology, was appoited director of the ceter i August. She recetly completed a doctorate i health-related scieces gerotology. The ceter is pursuig a umber of projects, icludig the followig: Ehlma Bladder scaer study - A research study fuded by the Idiaa State Departmet of Health will assess the beefits of usig a bladder ultrasoud scaer i ursig homes. Four ursig homes i Souther Idiaa will serve as study sites. Coferece o agig - The College of Nursig ad Health Professios ad the Southwester Idiaa Regioal Coucil o Agig will sposor the secod aual Mid- America Istitute o Agig August 12 13, The first twoday coferece was well received last summer with more tha 275 healthcare professioals, older adults, ad caregivers attedig the multidiscipliary evet featurig atioally recogized speakers ad sessios o 25 topics related to successful agig. Livable commuities - Ehlma is meetig with represetatives of commuity agecies to discuss parterig to develop Evasville as a livable commuity. Sady Markwood, keyote speaker at the recet agig coferece, explaied a atioal program called Blueprit for Actio: Livable Commuities for All Ages. It provides local leaders with detailed procedures ad practical solutios i areas such as housig, zoig, trasportatio, health ad supportive services, civic egagemet, ad lifelog learig. STELLAR - Studets iterested i agig ad welless have opportuities to collaborate with STELLAR (Studets ad Elderly Likig Aroud Relatioships), a campus studet orgaizatio focusig o healthy agig.

2 Dea s Notes 2 Telehealth comes to College of Nursig ad Health Professios The ewly aouced parterships betwee our college, the Hadi Shrie, ad Shriers Hospitals for Childre is a wi-wi for area childre, for Hadi Shrie members who uselfishly provide their time to trasport childre to hospitals i Ciciati, Chicago, ad St. Louis, ad for our faculty ad studets. Telehealth is the use of telecommuicatios ad iformatio techology to provide healthcare services wheever there is large physical distace betwee patiet ad the healthcare providers. Telehealth is growig at a rapid rate ad is beig used i hospitals, cliics, physicia offices, ad homes. Recogizig this ew frotier, we are developig a program of istructio ad practice opportuities to better prepare studets for this expadig area. Throughout the coutry, Shriers specialty hospitals provide bur, orthopedic, cleft palate, ad related specialty treatmet for thousads of childre at a cost of millios of dollars. The local Hadi Shrie members have provided support ad trasportatio to these Telehealth provides real-time video cosultatio. The ew Southwest Idiaa Area Health Educatio Ceter (AHEC) has bee established with federal fudig of more tha $203,000 to meet eeds related to healthcare workforce ad access issues i a 10-couty area. Hosted by the College of Nursig ad Health Professios, the ceter was created i 2007 with a plaig grat. Dr. Nadie Coudret, dea of the College of Nursig ad Health Professios, said eeds assessmet ad the developmet of a orgaizatioal structure bega with the aticipatio of federal fudig begiig i fall The Southwest Idiaa AHEC serves Daviess, Dubois, Gibso, Kox, Perry, Pike, Posey, Specer, Vader-burgh, ad Warrick couties. The atiowide AHEC etwork icludes more tha 200 ceters. The six i Idiaa are coordiated through a cetral program office housed i the Idiaa Uiversity School of Medicie. AHEC has three goals: improve the distributio of the health professios workforce improve the diversity of the health professios workforce improve the quality of health professios educatio ad healthcare services At a lauch meetig i October, healthcare ad commuity leaders from the 10 couties leared more about the Southwest Idiaa AHEC. A umber of $5,000 mii-grats will be available to allow orgaizatios to meet eeds related to AHEC goals i their commuities. specialty hospitals for childre livig i Southwest Idiaa. Childre who have received their primary treatmet at Shriers Hospitals for Childre will receive care i the USI Telehealth Cliic i lieu of travelig miles for follow-up assessmet ad suture/staple removal. Our college is the first i the Midwest to have telehealth equipmet ad i-house practice opportuities. Dr. Kare Parker, assistat professor of ursig, visited the Shriers Childre Bur Hospital i Ciciati to prepare for USI s role i acceptig patiets for telehealth. Gia Schaar ad Kathy Phillips, ursig faculty, also are participatig i presetig ad carig for patiets i the Telehealth Cliic. Studets ad other faculty will have the opportuity to lear ad participate i this rapidly expadig care-delivery system. We developed a diet for Alice cosistig of milk, butter, ad egg boiled together to create a highprotei, high-fat diet, Walker said. The machie will be used i scearios i the cliical simulatio lab ad i classes o exposures ad trauma procedures. Dr. Marti Reed, program director for radiologic techology, said, I the simulatio lab studets ca lear how to take the portable x-ray equipmet to the bed ad positio it correctly over the patiet as if they were goig to take a exposure i a hospital room. We also do some collaborative learig i the simulatio lab where our studets lear how to commuicate ad cooperate with other healthcare professioals. Respiratory Therapy Successful graduates Six studets completed the respiratory therapy program i August. Zachary Farmer received the Deacoess Hospital/Essa P. Goebel Award for academic achievemet; Joh Kig received the Deacoess Hospital/Essa P. Goebel Award for leadership ad professioalism. All six graduates have successfully completed the Natioal Board for Respiratory Care certified respiratory therapist examiatio ad achieved state licesure. Respiratory Care Club Members of the Respiratory Care Club celebrated Natioal Respiratory Care Week i October. Wehmer is a member of the Natioal Educatio Committee for the Associatio of Perioperative Nurses (AORN). The proposal resulted i a $100,000 grat to equip 83 Higdo ambulaces operated by Louisville Metro Emergecy Medical Services with software to trasmit electrocardiograph test results to three Norto hospitals. MSN studet receives $2,000 IONE scholarship Audra Douglas 05, a studet i the Master of Sciece i Nursig program, has bee awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the Idiaa Orgaizatio of Nurse Executives.
