1 Personal Spam Solution Overview Please logon to using your network logon and password. This is an overview of what you can do with this system. Common Terms used in this document: Whitelist = Any address in this list is considered valid and will never be blocked. Blacklist = Any address in this list is considered spam and will always be blocked. Quarantined = Mail is held on a system for a period of time for review by the end user. Blocked = Mail is deleted as it arrives. Overview of system This system is based on an internal sliding scale scoring system, this is important to understand because you can control what score will pass thru the system and what score will be stopped, and what score will be removed without notice. Later in this document you will be shown how you can change or even disable this system for your account, an important part to understand is this is a staggered system; you have 3 levels to control: Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Score Quarantine Block As new travels through this system and meets any of the levels you set the mail will be processed accordingly. Score simply marks the as suspicious and allows it to pass to your Quarantine holds a copy of this on a web system for your action
2 Block removes the so you have no record of this transaction Example Settings: Default Settings Score 3 : Quarantine 3.5 : Block 4 Marks any mail that scores 3 to 3.5 but delivers it Holds any mail that scores 3.5 to 4 on web system Removes any mail that scores 4+ (This is the default on the main system that is best settings for the Dickinson environment) Custom Setting 1: Score 2 : Quarantine 7 : Block 9 Marks any mail that scores 2 to 7 but delivers it Holds any mail that scores 7 to 9 on web system Removes any mail that scores 9+ Custom Setting 2: Score 1 : Quarantine 10* : Block 10* Marks any mail that scores 1 or higher and delivers it Quarantine is disabled nothing will be held on web system Block is disabled nothing will be blocked *note this is not recommended
3 When you first enter your area this is your personal Quarantine inbox; this contains any that was scored according to either the system default settings or your personal settings (reviewed later in these instructions) and therefore qualifies as Quarantined SPAM. From this page you can choose to Deliver, Whitelist, or Delete each . You can also choose to classify an incoming as SPAM so that it will be Blocked automatically rather then being Quarantined. By Clicking on the Preferences Tab you will be given various configurations that you can control if you find that the defaults are not enough control or too much control.
4 On tab Whitelist/Blacklist you can add addresses to your own personal Whitelist and Blacklist by adding the addresses and clicking Add. On Tab Quarantine Settings you can enable or disable Quarantine, you can also select how often you are notified via the automated reporting system of what is held in Quarantine. By default this is set to Daily between 3:30 and 4PM. This is a summary of every thing in your Quarantine mailbox and will be sent to your address by default.
5 On tab Spam Settings you can change your configured spam settings. By default it is set to Use system defaults you must first select no then save settings to see the bar to make changes to this level. It is important to understand that moving these bars from their defaults will effect how and what you receive in the system. Tag Score: anything meeting this score will be tagged as possible Spam but delivered Quarantine Score: anything meeting this but lower then Block score will be held on the system and for your action but not delivered to your system. Block Score: anything that meets or exceeds this will be block and removed. By varying these settings you can manage your to your own standards - examples: If you want everything Quarantined Set Block to 10 If you want nothing Quarantined Set Quarantine to 10 If you want everything deleted Set Block to 1 (this is very dangerous as legitimate mail will be deleted automatically) You can also disable all spam filtering on this page, allowing all mail to your mailbox.
