3 Report from the Chair Judy Elmore I am proud to acknowledge and report the efforts of the Board of Directors and its supporters this past year. The helped fund $439,000 in scholarships, the campus Wish List program, an increase in our participation in the STAR Book Reserve Program, and new memberships on the Board and its auxiliaries the Patrons and the Hens and Chickens Quilt Fellowship and increased Community Relations. staff (L-R) Ryan Chung, John Wordes, Sheila Cox, Bruce Berman, and Tuan Huynh. The Office is located in the Administration Building on the east side of the President s Courtyard. The Golden West College The Golden West College was organized in 1986 to solicit and manage gifts to benefit the college and its students. The is dedicated to supporting the College s mission of providing comprehensive academic opportunities to the community for lifelong learning. A board of directors, which provides the leadership and direction for the organization s operation, manages the. The has grown steadily since 1986 with assets over $8,400,000. This has been accomplished through donations of cash, bequests and grants from individuals and businesses. The has provided over $6,700,000 in scholarships to Golden West College students. In addition to cash assets, the annually receives donated equipment and supplies that represent thousands of dollars in non-monetary gifts. The primary focus of the Board of Directors is to work towards building support for college-wide needs. To nurture groups who have special interests in supporting Golden West College, the provides staff support and direction to two auxiliaries. Each auxiliary, managed by its own board and officers, requires membership dues for operational expenses. In April, 2014, the held its 17th annual Golden West College Gala. We are extremely pleased to have raised $118,000. The proceeds will benefit Golden West College students and the campus Wish List. We particularly want to thank Elmore Toyota, Union Bank of California, Southern California Edison, Huntington Beach Hospital and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. as major sponsors, as well as all of the underwriters who gave so generously to this event. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Gala Committee and the community at large for continuing to support this very important event. We look forward to continuing this success at our 18th Gala scheduled for April 11, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa. Our 23rd annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony was celebrated on October 23, Four Golden West College Alumni were honored as Alumni Pillars of Achievement recipients. Since the inception of this awards program in 1991, 100 alumni have been recognized. We honored two Pillars of Support ($25,000-$99,999) Massen Greene and Rainbow Environmental Services, as well as 16 Premier Pillars ($100,000+) and three Golden Society Honorees. The donor wall was increased by 45 donor names. In closing, I would like to personally thank Golden West College President Wes Bryan, Director Bruce Berman, the Board of Directors and those who have provided advice, counsel, professional guidance, financial support and personal time to the Board during this past year. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the community at large, which has continued to support the and the college with its generosity. Without this dedication, our work would not be possible. The s objectives for 2015 include increasing the Board s role in fostering student success, expanding Board membership, and continuing a high level of participation from our members. We are also looking forward to a successful Gala fundraising event, while continuing to seek fresh ideas for new fund raising opportunities. I look forward to the upcoming year as we focus on our goal of enhancing student success at Golden West College. GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT The Golden West College s mission is to provide resources to support the College for advancing educational opportunities and life-long learning for students. 4 The facts of the matter are: Message from Golden West College President, Wes Bryan FROM THE STUDENTS POINT OF VIEW One of the primary goals of this page is to say thank you for your generosity in supporting our students. But first I want to share with you why your generosity is appreciated. Most donors have a general idea about why they have chosen Golden West College students as their benefactors, whether it is based on an isolated event, a memory made while attending the college, or the opportunity to help a single individual attend. In my role as President of this fine college, I am able to see firsthand from the students points of view how these donations work miracles in their lives. There are common misperceptions about community colleges; people think that because it is low cost everyone can afford to attend, or that only under-qualified students end up here and these colleges aren t real colleges. Cost For many students even the low tuition of $46.00 a unit is a challenge when added to the high costs of textbooks, transportation, supplies, and study time, including time to repair ineffective study skills, poor test results, or failed classes from years before. All of these issues take time away from family, friends, and work and may add to increased day-to-day living costs. These hidden costs are high, but we can help. Under-qualified students Community colleges offer second chances for missed opportunities. They stand for renewed hope, a safe place to take a class that may have held a student back, a place to learn a skill that can help students advance in their careers, to get counseling, and to get tutoring or other support and resources offered in our Learning Resource Center. Students can check out a textbook they can t afford to buy, use a computer they don t have, find a quiet place to study, or see a teacher one-on-one in a quiet office. The challenges are daunting and could crush the new-found hope that could change their lives. We know they can become more than they have been, they can be successful, and we can help. Not a real college Across the CSU system, the majority of students graduating with a BA/BS degree each year started at a California Community College (53 percent) and GWC transfers a high number of students to CSUs each year. In the UC system, about one third of all BS/BA degree recipients started at a California Community College as well. We think the first two years of college are foundational they help students learn to persevere, to take classes they may not have known they needed in order to do better in those they will need. We know we teach them as well or better than anybody and that is how we can help. Thank you for your generosity in supporting our students. You must have a sense of the important role Golden West College has in providing quality educational opportunities to the people of this community. That is why you have helped us help them. That is why it gives me pleasure to thank you for your generosity. I know this spring, when I shake the hands of students graduating with an AA degree, or getting a Certificate of Achievement in the career field of their choice, that you helped make graduation happen and that, without you, we could not help them help themselves and their families, their employers, and our community. Alumni Spotlight Meet Ron Catt If his name sounds familiar that s because he is owner of Ron Catt Auto Care, in Huntington Beach. Ron is a successful, self-made businessman respected in the community and automotive industry. Like many success stories, his career interest started in the classroom. For Ron Catt, it started here at Golden West College. While attending Golden West College from , Ron completed all available auto technician classes offered and acquired his California State Smog License and Brake & Lamp Installer/Adjuster license. Ron obtained seven ASE Certificates in 1982, and became an ASE Master Technician and ASE Master Truck Technician in At the age of 24, Ron purchased his own service station and at 26, he moved into the high-tech repair facility in which Ron Catt Auto Care, currently resides. In 1996, Ron was awarded the NAPA/ASE Technician of the year competing against hundreds of applicants from across the country for the prestigious title and national recognition for achieving excellence in the automotive-repair field. In 2004, Golden West College awarded Ron with the Alumni Pillar of Achievement Award for his commitment to Golden West College Automotive Program, his successful career and community involvement. Twenty-five years after starting his business, Ron still maintains a witty, entrepreneurial spirit. Even though automotive technology has advanced, Ron Catt Auto Care, has prospered into a multi-million dollar a year company with 10 full-time employees. The company specializes in complete automotive services for foreign and domestic vehicles. Ron is involved in the Automotive Service Council of California (ASCCA) and his business is a Featured Facility with the AAA Approved Auto Repair Program. The STAR program has become a great success among students as it allows them to access their texts through a library loan program. Last year, over 4900 book loans were circulated from the 239 Titles, covering 39 academic programs. Hens & Chickens Quilt Auxiliary The Hens & Chickens Quilt Fellowship of Golden West College, an auxiliary of the, began in 1989 when a group of quilters did not want to disband after having taken a quilting class at Golden West College. Their name, Hens & Chickens, was taken from the name of a quilt block. Originally a group of five, they are now 25 members strong and range in age from 12 years to 80. Each year, they make a quilt for an opportunity drawing and donate the funds to GWC scholarships as well as contributions to the campus for such projects as theater renovations, ballet bars for the dance department, new library books, a Fine Arts Gallery security system, Science Museum supplies and a brick entryway for the GWC California Native Garden. 9 Bern Baumgartner (right) awarding Justin Krumb the Alumni Pillar of Achievement at the 2014 Courtyard of Honor Ceremony Bern Baumgartner, Golden West College Business Faculty Member, Golden West College Board Director and Treasurer Bern has been a regular on the GWC Campus since 2007 as a part-time instructor in the Business Department, becoming a full-time Business Faculty member in In 2008, Bern also joined the GWC Board. Bern thoroughly enjoys his time at GWC, saying, Teaching business, marketing, and entrepreneurship to GWC students is a passion of mine. There is so much potential in our students that I strive to unleash. One of Bern s focus areas is building a GWC Entrepreneurship Program. We are adding new entrepreneurship classes and developing a certificate program designed to enable students interested in starting a small business, says Bern. We already have a tremendous amount of interest from the community and our students, including the formation of a student-run entrepreneurship club on campus. Bern is able to leverage his 20+ year career in professional consulting, business development, and sales and marketing management. He had a successful career with business software leader, SAP and he is the Founder and President of ERP Ready, Inc. a provider of strategic business development consulting services, including support to start-up and small businesses. As a GWC Board Member, Bern has played an active role in the Board s fundraising activities. He is a regular participant at the Annual Galas, Chefs for Scholarships events, and Courtyard of Honor ceremonies. He is currently serving on the Executive Board as Treasurer. The does so much to support the students and campus including the distribution of much needed and greatly appreciated student scholarships, says Bern. Bern shared the reason behind his passion for education, saying, GWC offers our students so many opportunities to expand their horizons and improve their lives. Ultimately, the success of our students helps drive the success of our community. Project Self-Sufficiency The Board on Campus GWC in the Community The Golden West College proudly gives back to the community by supporting the El Viento, The Project Self-Sufficiency, the Huntington Beach Youth Shelter, and AltaMed s Huntington Beach Clinic. Project Self-Sufficiency is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization that supports low income, single parents working toward an education goal to become economically independent. Our foundation s goal is to raise the funds needed to provide the tools and support that will help parents achieve their independence. This is a powerful initiative for these parents, as it will change the pathway for their family, many times, breaking the cycle of abuse and building their self-esteem, which ultimately leads to a better future for generations. El Viento How does the El Viento take students from the poorest neighborhood in Huntington Beach, with every disadvantage, and have all 450 students go to college? If the Oak View neighborhood were a city, it would be the eleventh poorest in the nation. El Viento makes a 10 year commitment - taking students from 4th grade through their second year of college. The first in their families to graduate high school and attend college, their $4,000 scholarship gives them a head start as they are taught, encouraged, tutored, modeled, and enriched. The students overcome the cycle of poverty and neighborhood challenges like academic failure, gang involvement, drug use, teen pregnancy, illiteracy, and a sense of hopelessness. They achieve academic and social skills, confidence, success, and become role models. College bound behavior is encouraged through science projects, workshops, museum trips, and sailing classes. Student and family expectations are changed as they learn that hard work and education create future options and success. El Viento seeks to make a difference to leave a legacy for the children, the families, and the community of Oak View and Huntington Beach. We are grateful to have partners like the Coast Community College District and Golden West College. Oak View Renewal The Center for Entrepreneurship & Leadership is a partnership between the Oak View Renewal Partnership (OVRP) and Golden West College (GWC). Our overarching objective in creating The Center is to create a sustainable economic base for the Oak View Community and Huntington Beach, by nurturing and investing in for-profit business, social and micro enterprises, which will create earned income for the benefit of GWC and OVRP. The mission of The Center is to cultivate leaders throughout Huntington Beach and Orange County by helping them realize their entrepreneurial dreams through education, counseling, mentoring, investments and peer-to-peer teams. Huntington Beach Youth Shelter The Light of Love snowflakes support the Huntington Beach Youth Shelter. The Youth Shelter is an emergency crisis and intervention program providing a safe environment for approximately 120 Orange County year old children each year. The home provides a clean bed, meals, counseling and tutoring for runaways at risk, and homeless youth in crisis GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 15

Rainbow s 17-acre campus is located in Huntington Beach, and is the site of the transfer station that accepts 4,000 tons per day. Their state-of-the-art single stream clean material recovery facility and several mixed waste processing stations are designed to efficiently handle various material streams such as green and wood waste, commercial and multifamily waste, and construction and demolition debris. As a long-standing member of the communities they serve, Rainbow takes pride in and cares about being a good neighbor and partner. Accordingly, Rainbow implements innovative and environmentally safe solutions to minimize operational impacts on their neighbors such as on-site storm water runoff treatment, nuisance bird abatement using hawks and proactive and ongoing dust and odor control. Strong and sustainable civic and charitable organizations are the leading indicator of a healthy community. As an active member of the community, Rainbow is committed to supporting the many worthy civic and charitable organizations throughout the communities they serve. In addition, several of Rainbow s executives volunteer their personal time to serve on community foundations and boards such as Golden West College, Rotary, Kiwanis and Soroptimists International of Huntington Beach. Rainbow has supported Golden West College for many years with Craig Campbell serving as a Board Director. During the 2014 Courtyard of Honor, Craig stated, We are proud of this support and truly honored in acceptance of our Pillar today. Golden West College provides a wonderful starting point for those young minds which seek higher learning opportunities GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 17
11 2014 Pillars of Achievement (L-R) Justin Krumb, Marie Esch-Radtke, Dr. Ernesto Silva-Zolezzi, Steve Ames Four GWC Alumni were inducted into the Alumni Pillars of Achievement at the 2014 Courtyard of Honor Ceremony. Steve Ames is a retired Captain from the Orange Police Department who also worked as an adjunct instructor at Golden West College and Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Training center for 31 years. Steve began taking criminal justice courses in 1977, which led to his attendance in the Basic Police Academy (Class 59) as a non-sponsored recruit. He was hired while attending the Academy and graduated from the Criminal Justice Training Center as a California Peace Officer, beginning his extensive career in public safety. I believe that much of my success in the Criminal Justice profession is directly attributable to my start here in the Police Academy even back then the training I received was focused on the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, personal character and doing the right thing for the right reasons. Since graduating in 1994, Justin Krumb has been immersed in all areas of video and film production with a focus on feature documentary and broadcast television. For almost two decades, Justin has worked on a variety of documentary and commercial projects in countless countries spanning the globe, ranging in subject matter from adventure, travel and sports documentary to humanitarian and environmental issues. His work has earned him the honor of an EMMY Award for best documentary and film festival awards that include: Best Environmental Film, Best Original Score, Audience Appreciation, Spirit Award and multiple Regional EMMY nominations for editing and camera work in long form television, documentaries and PSA s. Marie Esch-Radtke graduated from the Golden West College Nursing Program in This was the beginning of a long productive career in nursing, going on to receive her BSN in 2002 and MN in After the loss of her son, Marie began a small bereaved parent s support group which grew into 11 different support groups throughout the county, finally culminating in the establishment of the Southern California Pregnancy & Infant Loss Center. She was recognized as a finalist for the Carl W. Bull Excellence in the Profession of Nursing Award, for nursing alumni of the Coast Community College District in 1986 and recipient in Marie returned to Golden West College as a faculty intern and tenured in 2008, where she also served as an advisor, Faculty Senate Executive Committee member and Scholastic Review Committee member. It s been a wild ride, but a ride I wouldn t change in the least. My ride began at Golden West College in 1972 my instructors gave me the concepts and tools for a lifetime. Dr. Ernesto Silva-Zolezzi is a Spanish Professor at Kennesaw State University where he also takes students abroad to Peru. Ernesto began taking classes at Golden West College in 1986, while learning to speak English. Ten years later, in 1996, Ernest became a Spanish instructor at GWC teaching in the classroom he had taken his very first class. He credits his professors at GWC who helped guide and support his academic and life goals, and remains in close contact with them today. The reason I became a student at GWC was simple: To me it was the best school I could find to learn English. Once I visited the campus, I immediately fell in love with it.
