As head of the IT-Servicezentrum (ITS) I consider cooperation and teamwork with regard to IT issues, both on campus and off campus, to be particularly important. The IT Service Centre itself was established as part of the university s general IT concept. We continue to refine the information management by continuously expanding the data network in order to facilitate an interactive university. Our activities include integrated information management for communication and publication channels as well as cooperating with teaching staff to offer new forms of instruction which require special multimedia resources. 3 Student Username { s-kennung } Student ID Card (Campus-Card) Where do I find my username? Layout of your student ID card New students at the University of Bayreuth receive their username and password from the Student Administration Office together with their enrolment documents. It is also printed on the back of your student ID [page 5, no. 6] Front This initial temporary password is either written on your enrolment application, or, if you are enrolled in a restricted degree programme, on your letter of admission. Changing your password on-campus: computer logged in on the campus network/ off-campus: VPN-connection is required [page 6] visit the ITS Selbstbedienungsportal (self-service portal): Your student TAN-list is sent to your students address [page ]. Please keep in mind that your TAN-list stays encrypted with that first password mentioned above. You may print the TAN-list or save it to your hard drive. Your username is very important during your course of studies at the university as you have to use it to log in to various kinds of services: elearning flexnow UB-library-catalogue (in progress until further notice you use the Bib-Code [page 5, no. 4.) Important note: If your device will attempt connecting to educonfig automatically AFTER the following configuration process, please just remove educonfig from your favourite network list. To access the internet, you will have to meet the following requirements: Wi-Fi network your device must be internet and WLAN-enabled. You require a valid student username [page 4]. How do I get eduroam up and running? As of the summer semester 04, the University of Bayreuth has been testing eduroam on campus. You don t need to have your device registered with us to get internet just configure your device on your own! Off Campus: VPN-Client If you need to do some off-campus research in databases and e-journals, you can use a VPN-connection* + the university s proxy-server ( pac). 6 PC-Garage Help with students private laptops Studying without a computer? No way! If your digital companion decides to break down on short notice, it can leave you in a difficult position. This is why the IT-Servicezentrum provides students at the University of Bayreuth with free IT support! [IT-Servicezentrum] PCGarage How do I Check my Student ? Access via webmail All students have an account that follows the form: [email protected]. The student is valid as long as you re enrolled at the university and for six months after leaving the university. The available online storage that comes with your mailbox is 00MB at present. Please check your student account on a regular basis as the university s mails and messages will be sent to this account. Our rules The opening hours are the same throughout the year, and no appointment is necessary! We only offer our services to students for their private computers. We decide on a case-by-case basis whether fixing a particular computer is possible or worthwhile. We do not compete with shops off campus. Consultation or dropping off a computer can only be done during the opening hours listed above. We are not liable for damage or data loss (make backups!) We do give advice on specific spare parts but the students are responsible for buying the particular parts themselves. There is no fixing guarantee. We do not supply assessments for other computer repair shops. 7 IT Services and IT Training Our university offers many ways to study from home and to access information necessary for your courses and lectures. Please find additional information at the back of this brochure! FlexNow FlexNow is a web-based software which manages some degree courses at the University of Bayreuth. With FlexNow you can register for and withdraw from courses & exams and see your student records. e-learning e-learning has become an integral part of education at our university. It can be used in and/or out of the classroom. 8 Printing and Scanning Follow-Me-Printing: What is that? it s cool! There are many printing stations { Druckstationen } located all around campus. With your Student ID card [page 5] you can send a print job and print it anywhere on campus regardless of which printing station it was sent to in the first place! An up-to-date overview of all the printing stations is available online: PC-Pools Druck- und Scanstationen Printing from your laptop (W)LAN-Drucken (printing via wireless & via ethernet): It is now possible to send a print job to any one of the printing stations all over campus from your own laptop thus you could send the printing order via WiFi in one building and do the printing itself in another building!
