KAREN URBAN, President Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation As the economy in South Texas grows, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is expanding faster than at any time in its history; making the work of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation more important than ever. Now, after 25 years of helping Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi be the best it can be, the Foundation is determined to forge stronger bonds between its members and the University s students and faculty. With enrollment in the fall of 2012 reaching more than 10,500 students, communication and interaction are essential so that the Foundation can clearly understand the University s needs. The students, faculty and administration know what the Foundation can do to support the Island University in its quest to be a worldclass institution for learning. The Foundation kicked off the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation

Annual Report 2012 academic year with a reception for the Board and University leadership where a new dialogue began. For , the Foundation awarded 370 scholarships. What is good for Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi is good for all of South Texas. The future leaders artists, business executives, engineers, nurses, and teachers who will contribute to the growth of the area, are learning their crafts and benefiting from the Foundation today. Encompassing the Colleges of Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Health Sciences, and Science and Engineering, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has expanded rapidly in the past decade. The College of Nursing was established in Six years later, the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences was established, and just last fall the community came together to support the new School of Arts, Media and Communication. With more programs, come more students, and at the Island University many of these students will be the first in their families to reach for an advanced degree. These are often students who have the talent and desire for that education, but will not have the resources unless the Foundation can help them. The Foundation s mission is a rare and exciting opportunity. It calls us to create and mold academic programs that will be responsive to the needs of modern students and a changing 21st century workplace. These programs will give students mastery of the tools of today and the ability to succeed in the many professions of tomorrow that have yet to be created. The mission requires integrating technology into the classroom and, where What is good for Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is good for all of South Texas. The future leaders who will contribute to the growth of the area, are learning their crafts and benefiting from the Foundation today. possible, bringing the classroom to students. It s a mission we have proudly undertaken for a quarter of a century. We solicit, invest, administer and distribute donations, gifts and bequests for the exclusive benefit of the University. These funds have allowed the Foundation to make significant contributions to the development of the Island campus funding scholarships, scientific research, chairs, professorships, construction projects and improvements in classroom technology. The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation, formerly the Corpus Christi State University Foundation, was organized as a nonprofit corporation in December Through the efforts and generosity of founding members Mr. and Mrs. Paul R. Haas, Mrs. John Allen King, Mrs. Margaret R. Turnbull and many others the Foundation now manages approximately $36 million for the benefit of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. We invite you to participate in the Foundation s important work. We can assist you in crafting an endowment or gift that complements your resources and supports your own vision for the future. It is an exciting and rewarding journey. We hope you ll join us. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation 3

DR. FLAVIUS KILLEBREW President & CEO A new economy based on innovation and human potential is unfolding before us, presenting exceptional opportunities for the communities and students that Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi serves. Funding from private donors and corporations often provides the edge of excellence for these cutting edge research and educational opportunities that are making the Island University and South Texas a beacon of innovation. In 2012, our faculty and staff engaged in projects with a cumulative value of more than $42 million, integrating students as early as the undergraduate level in projects that can have implications worldwide and provide significant economic returns. 4 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation

Annual Report 2012 In 2012, our faculty and staff engaged in projects with a cumulative value of more than $42 million, integrating students as early as the undergraduate level in projects that can have implications worldwide and provide significant economic returns. Examples include our Plasma Engineering Research Lab that is finding new ways to heal wounds and treat cancer, our Texas Coastal Oceanic Observation Network that provides data essential to the efficient operation of the shipping industry, and our Coastal Bend Business Innovation Center that is helping entrepreneurs move their ideas into profitable businesses while giving students the opportunity to hone their skills. Students at the Island University are also enjoying incomparable learning opportunities through upgraded laboratories and equipment, including a remotely-operated underwater vehicle, and in new facilities such as the Dr. Jack T. Dugan Family Soccer and Track Stadium. Funding for scholarships may, however, have the most significant impact. In the current fiscal year, the foundation has given more than $550,000 in scholarship funds that have opened the doors of opportunity and made the difference in students completing their educational journeys. While we celebrate these individual successes, they are also much more each graduate is also contributing to a more prosperous future for South Texas. It is my honor to share in this report these journeys of success that you have helped us create. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation 5

TONY LaMANTIA Making a difference, one student at a time Tony LaMantia, a principal of L&F Distributors, is a staunch believer in the value of education. LaMantia was born in San Antonio and grew up McAllen, Texas. He has dedicated his work life to L&F Distributors, the family business, with his father, Joe LaMantia, Jr., sister, Val, brothers, Joe III, Steve and Greg. But, supporting education and the community is his passion. LaMantia moved his family to Corpus Christi in 2002, when the family bought L&F Distributors. Almost immediately, LaMantia began giving back to the community and supporting education by founding the South Texas Academic Rising Scholars Scholarship (STARS). My father started the business in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation

Annual Report 2012 and was always interested in helping young people get an education, said LaMantia. We started STARS in 2002 and, since then, more than 8,000 students across Texas have benefited from its scholarships. Texas A&M University Corpus Christi is a STARS partner. STARS raises funds and gives a portion to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation to be awarded as scholarships. So far, 1,017 deserving Islander students have received STARS scholarships through the Foundation. I would like to continue to see STARS, and its partnership with Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, grow, LaMantia said. I would like to see every student who needs help get that help. We look for the kids who are the first in the family to go to college; because once a father, uncle, brother or sister goes to school, it starts a new tradition. First education is accepted, then it becomes expected. It becomes easier to convince young people to go to college when they see the benefits. Education improves everything in a community health, safety, and the economy. STARS raises most of its funds at major entertainment events the organization holds each year in Corpus Christi, Laredo and McAllen, Texas. In 2013, one will also be held in El Paso, allowing STARS to expand its support to that part of the state. Operating expenses are underwritten by L&F and Anheuser-Busch; so all the money raised goes to help fund scholarships in South Texas. Education is worth supporting because it has a multiplier effect, LaMantia explained. Education is worth supporting because it has a multiplier effect. When you bring kids together with teachers, the exchange of knowledge spreads out to parents and the rest of the community. Education imports knowledge into our community. It is especially important here in South Texas, which has at times been underserved. When you bring kids together with teachers, the exchange of knowledge spreads out to parents and the rest of the community. Education imports knowledge into our community. It is especially important here in South Texas, which has at times, been underserved, he said. For LaMantia, satisfaction comes in hearing about the difference STARS makes in the lives of real people. I ve started meeting young people in the area who would thank me for the help that a STARS scholarship gave them, he said. I was on a private ranch recently, and a schoolteacher there thanked me. I meet young people often now who say thank you. LaMantia is active in other community organizations as well. He served as Chairman of the Corpus Christi Economic Development Corporation and the USS Lexington Museum Board, and on the boards for the Kenedy Memorial Foundation, Nueces County Coastal Parks Board, Sharyland Independent School District Board, and the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. 10 DR. WES TUNNELL Living a passion for students and Marine Science The Foundation provides for research from some of the top academics in the world, including Dr. Wes Tunnell. Tunnell has pursued his passion for marine science, right here, at the Island University, for close to 40 years. Tunnell is still excited about the work he does as Associate Director and Endowed Chair for Biodiversity and Conservation at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies (HRI). Tunnell first came to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 1974, then called Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi, to help develop a Marine Science program. Since then, he has helped develop three Bachelor of Science degree programs, four master degree programs, and two doctoral programs. He was also instrumental in starting the Center for Coastal Studies, the University s first research center, and the HRI. Tunnell can be credited for the development of the Natural Resources Center, the Laguna Madre field 8 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation

Annual Report 2012 station, an international coral reef ecology research and teaching program, and two book series. Tunnell also taught 18 different classes ten undergraduate and eight graduate and advised or co-advised 55 master s level students, four Ph.D. candidates, and four post-doctoral students. He obtained about 150 grants worth more than $8 million that funded more than 90 publications, 65 technical reports, and five books. He was honored as the University s first Fulbright Scholar in , and was named the University s first Regents Professor in But, of all his accomplishments, it is his involvement with his students and the HRI that brings Tunnell the most distinction. That project began when Ed Harte, already an avid environmentalist, gifted Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with a $46 million endowment in 2000 to establish the HRI. In 2001, Tunnell was asked to work on the new Institute, from helping to design the building to developing a Ph.D. program. We moved in during the fall of 2005, Tunnell said. Mr. Harte said to me, Now make a difference. Mr. Harte was an environmentalist and a good business man. He wanted the Institute to think about policy. We now have an endowed chair to do research that influences policy. The Harte Model is the synergy of science working together with policy, law and socio-economics. Mr. Harte wanted to establish a center that is solutionsoriented. During fall 2012, Tunnell was able to combine many of his favorite things field work with students, the Gulf of Mexico and HRI research when scientists studied the oceanography of the South Texas coast in cruises onboard the Research Vessel Falkor, a ship provided by the Schmidt Ocean Institute. Because of the scope and depth of our research in the Gulf of Mexico, we are now the beneficiaries of the first cruise legs of this new research ship, said Tunnell. The vessel would cost tens of thousands of dollars a day, and we get it to use it for free! I hope my legacy is that I provided opportunities for students and faculty to get an education and jobs in Marine Science. There is now a foundation here that should last a long time. When Tunnell retires from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi at the end of August 2013, he will leave a tradition of education, research and commitment to the advancement of Marine Science. And while he intends to spend more time with his wife Kathy and his family, he also plans to stay active completing a book series, creating a report card for the Gulf of Mexico and doing liaison work with Mexico and Cuba. I hope my legacy is that I provided opportunities for students and faculty to get an education and jobs in Marine Science, Tunnell said. There is now a foundation here that should last a long time. 12 BRITTNEY HONEYCUTT Education yields affinity in accounting Brittney Honeycutt is a young woman who knows where she s going and how to get there. She is also one of the many deserving students helped by the Foundation and its donors. Her equation for success in life is: Experience + Determination + Education = Bright Future. Brittney grew up in Alice and Calallen, Texas and graduated from Calallen High School in After high school, she wasn t ready to commit to a four-year college and went to work full time as a waitress in San Antonio. I liked the instant gratification of going home with money in my pocket, she said. I was making more than working in an office for minimum wage. Brittney started taking classes at San Antonio College, paying her own way. I didn t have a major and took a variety of courses, she said. But, something significant was changing. 10 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation

Annual Report 2012 I had never been good at math, but as a waitress, math became about money. Algebra was an equation for making change. I took an accounting course and got an A, Brittney said. My mother worked as an office manager for a group of doctors, and knowing me, she thought I would like accounting. She was right. I like the fact that, if you do it right, there s an answer at the end that serves your purpose. I appreciate the order of numbers and what they can tell you about a business. I have learned over the last two years, that the A doesn t really matter. It s the knowledge you ve acquired in the course that will stay with you. In 2010, Brittney was ready to move back to Corpus Christi, live with her family and attend Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Starting as a sophomore in the College of Business, she had a relatively low GPA. But, then I took my second accounting course, she recalled. It was Managerial Accounting, and I had a great professor, Sharon Polansky, and everything clicked. I switched my major from Business to Accounting. If grades are any indication, accounting must be the right field for Brittney as she has earned straight A s since transferring to the Island University. But I have learned over the last two years, that the A doesn t really matter. It s the knowledge you ve acquired in the course that will stay with you, she said. I continue to enjoy my accounting courses. The classes that my fellow students complain about are the ones I enjoy the most. Cost Accounting was especially challenging, but I just loved it. A hard worker, who enjoys keeping busy; Brittney handles the books at her father s energy consulting business and has been a student assistant to Dr. Katy Peeples, Professor of Management in the College of Business, for two and a half years. And, as if maintaining a 4.0 grade average and two part-time jobs isn t enough, Brittney is active in a number of organizations. She is serving her second term as President of the Student Accounting Society, and is Treasurer and a Student Board Member of the Society for the Advancement of Management. She is also a board member of the Corpus Christi YWCA and sits on its Finance Committee. In the spring of 2012, Brittney applied for a Foundation scholarship and received her first award for the fall semester. It has made a tremendous difference, she said. It means my parents no longer have to support me and I can focus on course work. I will continue to work for my dad and will volunteer at the Coastal Bend Business Innovation Center in the spring. Brittany s goal is to become a certified public accountant. Eventually, I hope to be a manager in an accounting department for a small to medium- size company, she said. It could be any field, but the energy industry is especially attractive. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation 11
