A Message from Campaign Co-Chairs Mary R. and John F. Brock III Philanthropy has been woven into the fabric of Georgia Tech since its founding 125 years ago, and private support has shaped the campus and created the qualitative advantages in teaching, research, facilities, and student life that elevate a good university to a great one. They are advantages that state appropriations alone cannot provide. Our vision for the future is to define the technological university of the twenty-first century. This means leading in innovative research and the commercialization of products to improve the human condition. It means leading in the education of bright young scholars. And it means leading in addressing critical social, technological, and policy decisions of our time. We are following the path forged by those who have come before us. Larry Gellerstedt, Erskine Love, Charlie Yates, Ivan Allen, Pete Silas, Al West they have all sat where we sit today. These great alumni were consummate leaders and personal philanthropists. They were champions for Georgia Tech, and they have shown us the way. Now, it is our turn to step forward. To seize the opportunities that abound, and to make the Institute s vision a reality, we have launched Campaign Georgia Tech. With the support of our alumni and friends, we can achieve great things. This is our time. This is our legacy. Sincerely, Mary R. and John F. Brock III, ChE 1970, MS ChE 1971 Co-Chairs, Campaign Georgia Tech
A Message from Dean Steve Salbu You are among our dedicated family of Georgia Tech alumni, corporate partners, and friends who have invested in and helped shape the vision for the Institute in general and the Ernest Scheller Jr. College of Business in particular. Your enthusiasm and commitment to our mission played a vital role in my decision to come to Tech. I have great confidence in our collective ability to achieve a host of ambitious dreams for the Scheller College of Business that might have seemed unrealistic just a few years ago. Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and friends, our students and faculty are learning and teaching in a high-tech, environmentally friendly facility that is widely considered one of the best in the nation. We remain grateful to the donors who have made our privately funded home possible. We take our responsibility as stewards of your generosity very seriously, leveraging it to advance our shared dreams for the College and the Institute. Your leadership and support will enable us to initiate and sustain highly innovative and interdisciplinary programs that are built on Georgia Tech s strengths and distinguish our offerings from traditional business schools. Our vision is for the Scheller College to become the world s preeminent business school for management and technology. In order to attain this goal, we must: Build a world-class faculty to advance knowledge, attract outstanding students, and sustain our upward trajectory in national reputation Invest in and enhance interdisciplinary programs at the intersection of technological innovation and commercialization Leverage eminent teacher-scholars, innovative academic program offerings, and robust scholarship support to attract exceptionally bright and ambitious students at all levels Thank you for reviewing our exciting and visionary goals and considering what role you would like to play in helping us attain them. Your time, talent, and generosity will continue to prove invaluable. Sincerely, Steve Salbu Dean and Stephen P. Zelnak Jr. Chair GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Scheller College of Business 1
Building a World-Class Faculty In recent years, the Scheller College of Business has attracted and retained exceptional faculty at all career levels, and the number of tenured and tenure-track professors has grown impressively. Continued growth is crucial for achieving the goal of becoming the world s leading business school for management and technology. This planned growth will reach across all management disciplines, with special emphasis on disciplines where Georgia Tech can and should emerge among the very best in the world. These disciplines include information technology management, operations management, supply chain management, quantitative and computational finance, and other strategic, interdisciplinary areas in which the Scheller College of Business can distinguish itself. Professor Ajay Kohli, the Gary T. and Elizabeth R. Jones Chair, is a renowned scholar in marketing, business, and economics. He also has extensive experience as a consultant to companies such as IBM, Accenture, and Texas Instruments, as well as the World Bank. To fulfill the College s great promise, permanent endowment support for faculty chairs and professorships must be secured to sustain the necessary growth trajectory. These resources are indispensible to attracting and retaining eminent teacher-scholars. The time is now to build upon this strong foundation for educational achievement. Deborah Turner, associate professor of accounting and the A. J. and Lynne Land Professor of Teaching Excellence, exemplifies the College s commitment to recruiting exceptional teacher-scholars. My Georgia Tech education has been absolutely instrumental in my career, so I wanted to give back to the school. By endowing a faculty chair, I m helping provide students with the opportunity to get a highcaliber education that will make a tremendous difference in their lives. My hope is that twenty-five years from now, they ll feel the same way I do about my Tech education and be in a similar position to support the school. Gregory J. 7 Launching and Sustaining Innovative Programs The Scheller College s emphasis on real-world problem solving and interdisciplinary education is increasingly attracting the brightest and most capable students. It is also attracting corporate affiliates who value and need the skills these students develop through a strong foundation of broad-based business knowledge and participation in the College s interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs. Private philanthropy is essential to launching and sustaining these programs, which differentiate Georgia Tech from the competition and prepare students at all levels for leadership in a dynamic, technology-driven world: The Steven A. Denning Technology & Management Program is a partnership between the Colleges of Business and Engineering allowing undergraduates to earn degrees in their chosen disciplines and a minor in engineering and management. A program expansion to include students from other academic disciplines is under way. The College seeks to establish endowed, named scholarships to attract top Georgia Tech students to participate in the program. Marie Thursby (center) is the Hal and John Smith Chair in Entrepreneurship, Professor of Strategic Management, and Executive Director and founder of the TI:GER Program. Technological Innovation: Generating Economic Results (TI:GER) Program, an award-winning collaboration between Georgia Tech and Emory Law School, places PhD students in Engineering, Sciences, and Computing; MBA students; and law students in teams. The program teaches them how to commercialize innovative technologies, whether as entrepreneurial start-up ventures or as large-scale, corporate-sponsored product development initiatives. The TI:GER Program gave me a high level of understanding of what it takes to build a successful business based on technology. The benefits of the program were immediately obvious. Left to right: Brent Duncan (MBA 2009), Justin Helsby (Emory JD 2009), and Walter Voit (PhD, Materials Science and Engineering 2009), TI:GER Program graduates now serving as CEO, COO and General Counsel, and CTO, respectively, of Syzygy Memory Plastics Inc., a company they launched as students which is commercializing its shape-memory technology for ear plug products in industrial settings. Dan Baker, CHEM 2000, MBA 2009 Warren L. Batts TI:GER Fellow Support for programs provides students with unparalleled opportunities in innovation, corporate entrepreneurship, and global competence at the intersection of business and technology. 8 6 CAMPAIGN GEORGIA TECH The Steven A. Denning Technology & Management Program has been named in honor of Denning, IM 1971, whose philanthropy has enabled the program s expansion to include students from disciplines such as the sciences and computing, and provided for an international component.
Attracting Exceptional Students The College s world-class faculty and innovative educational programs are increasingly attracting the attention of bright students from Georgia, across the nation, and around the globe. They are mastering such important and timely subjects as technology entrepreneurship and commercialization, management of innovation, financial performance and analysis, enterprise globalization, and international finance. The Ernest Scheller Jr. College of Business is securing permanent endowment support for dean s scholarships and fellowships to compete regionally and nationally for the top undergraduate and graduate student talent. Named scholarships may also be designated for students selected to participate in the Denning Technology & Management Program, the TI:GER Program, and international study abroad initiatives. Georgia Tech opened incredible doors for me in my career and provided me with a lifelong group of friends. It is with tremendous gratitude that Raena and I are funding dean s scholarships to attract the brightest, most talented undergraduates to the College of Management. Joseph W. Evans, IM 1971 Raena W. and Joseph W. Evans Dean s Scholarships Michael A. Neal, IM 1975, is the vice chairman of General Electric and chairman and CEO of GE Capital. Neal is one of many highly successful business and corporate leaders who graduated from Georgia Tech and who regularly come back to campus to speak to students in popular courses taught by Gary T. Jones, GMGT 1971, professor of the practice in finance. Katie Maxwell, BSBA 2012, is the McConnell Family Scholar in the Denning Technology & Management Program. The scholarship provides access to an expansive, interdisciplinary curriculum that will prepare today s students for leadership in the complex global marketplace of the twenty-first century. GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Scheller College of Business 7
Setting a New Standard Tomorrow s leaders must be equipped to deal with an increasingly complex, global economy and financial markets in a culturally diverse, highly technological world. The Scheller College of Business is setting a new standard in business education for the twenty-first century, leading the way in preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs and corporate leaders who bridge the worlds of technology and business. The philanthropic investment of alumni, friends, corporations, and foundations is crucial to sustaining and building upon this success for years to come. College of Management students have access to programs and facilities such as the Ferris-Goldsmith Trading Floor that give them a competitive advantage after graduation. The Path Forward Georgia Tech has traveled breathtaking distances in a very short time. It is a highly ranked international research university, an incubator for innovation and economic growth, and a leader in engineering and technology, producing well-rounded graduates who go on to make an extraordinary mark on the world. Today, it is forging a bold path forward. That path leads to a future in which Georgia Tech is known for its diverse, world-class students and faculty; for its innovative research and teaching; for being the institution that top decision-makers turn to in solving major problems; and for having the intellectual agility and vision not merely to face the future, but also to design it. Georgia Tech is ready to accomplish all of this, and more, with the support and engagement of alumni, parents, friends, and all who share a passion for great ideas, courageous thinking, and the desire to shape the world to come. 8 CAMPAIGN GEORGIA TECH
