Lombardi Author, How Universities Work, and president emeritus of the University of Florida, and former president of the Louisiana State University System and chancellor of UMass Amherst John V. Lombardi is currently a professor of history, associate director of Libraries, and director of the Measuring University Performance Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has served as president of the Louisiana State University System and chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and is president emeritus of the University of Florida. Among other university responsibilities, Lombardi has been provost and vice president of Academic Affairs at the Johns Hopkins University, and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and dean of International Programs at Indiana University. Robert D. Ballard, Ph.D. 74 Director, URI Center for Ocean Exploration, URI Graduate School of Oceanography, and President, Ocean Exploration Trust Robert D. Ballard has been a pioneer in the development of advanced deep submergence and telepresence technology. Although his Ph.D. is in marine geology and geophysics, his scientific interests run the gamut from the volcanic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes of the mid-ocean ridge to deepsea archaeology and maritime history. Dr. Ballard also spends a great deal of his time involved in various educational outreach programs; Community Based Stem Education, Nautilus Live, and TV programs for the National Geographic Society, where he is an Explorer-in-Residence. In 2008, Dr. Ballard secured the E/V Nautilus, which has become his flag-ship for exploration funded in part by NOAA s Office of Ocean Exploration. Nautilus is connected by way of a high bandwidth satellite link to the Inner Space Center and from there to the world. Ballard received his B.S. in physical sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his Ph.D. in geological oceanography from GSO.
5 Lorne A. Adrain 76 URI Foundation Executive Board Managing Director, Ballentine Partners, LLC Lorne Adrain is a URI Foundation Executive Board member and trustee. He is also past president of the Alumni Association Executive Board and has served URI in a number of other volunteer roles. He is the former chairman of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education and of the Rhode Island Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education. Active in philanthropic endeavors, Lorne is the founder of National Neighborhood Day, Social Venture Partners of Rhode Island (co-founder), and KindMark, a leader in the creation of software technologies that advance philanthropy. He serves on the boards of the Rhode Island Foundation, the Business Innovation Factory, and Big Picture Learning; is former chairman of the RI Special Olympics; and is the author of The Most Important Thing I Know book series. Adrain is a graduate of URI s College of Business Administration and holds an M.B.A. from Harvard University. He is currently a managing director at Ballentine Partners, LLC, an independent wealth management firm. Dwight F. Coleman M.S. 01, Ph.D. 03 Director, URI Inner Space Center, URI Graduate School of Oceanography Dwight Coleman runs URI s Inner Space Center a facility that utilizes telepresence technologies to connect research ships to share in real-time. He is also a research scientist at GSO and has participated in or led more than 30 oceanographic research cruises. He works closely with NOAA s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, the Ocean Exploration Trust, Sea Research Foundation s Mystic Aquarium, and NOAA s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. During the last several years he has been one of the expedition leaders onboard the E/V Nautilus. Dr. Coleman was previously a research geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. He has a bachelor s degree in geology from the University of New Hampshire and master s and Ph.D. degrees in geological oceanography from GSO.
6 David M. Dooley President, University of Rhode Island Dr. David M. Dooley became the 11th president of the University of Rhode Island in July He joined the University with nearly 30 years of experience in public and private higher education. Prior to joining the University, Dr. Dooley was the provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Montana State University. Dr. Dooley brings to URI a collaborative leadership style that encourages entrepreneurial approaches to problem solving and program development. Actively engaged in teaching and research throughout his academic career, Dr. Dooley began as an assistant professor of chemistry at Amherst College in 1978 and left in 1993 to chair the Montana State chemistry department. Dr. Dooley earned a B.A. in chemistry from the University of California in San Diego and a Ph.D. in chemistry from California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Thomas J. Silvia 83 URI Foundation Executive Board Managing Partner, VineBrook Partners Thomas J. Silvia was elected chair of the URI Foundation Executive Board in He has been a member of the Board since 2007, serving on several committees, including the Investment Committee. He is a past member of the University s Making A Difference Campaign Leadership Committee, and also serves as a member of the College of Business Ram Fund Advisory Committee. Silvia received his B.S. in chemical engineering from URI in A former bond group leader and portfolio manager with Fidelity Investments, he is currently a managing partner at the real estate investment firm VineBrook Partners. David C. Smith Professor and Associate Dean, URI Graduate School of Oceanography David Smith joined the faculty at the GSO in Most of his research involves studying how microorganisms perform in the marine environment. These research efforts are divided between studying microbes in the water column and those in the sediments. Smith received his B.S. from California State University, Long Beach, and his Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UCSD).
7 Louise H. Thorson M.B.A. 85 President, URI Alumni Association Executive Board SVP, Capital Management, Citizens Financial Group Louise H. Thorson was elected president of the URI Alumni Association Executive Board on June 5, She has been a member of the Board since 2007, and has served on several committees, including the Finance Committee (for which she was chair), the Marketing Committee, and Funding Committee. Thorson received her M.B.A. from URI in 1985, which led her to a career in banking. She has worked in a broad variety of areas, including risk, product, sales, and marketing management, and is currently SVP, Capital Management, for Citizens Financial Group. Raymond M. Wright Dean, URI College of Engineering Raymond M. Wright is the dean of engineering at the University of Rhode Island and holds the Vincent and Estelle Murphy Professorship in Engineering. Wright served as associate dean of the College of Engineering, chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, acting director of the URI Transportation Center, interim director of the Rhode Island Water Resources Center, and in 1997 he was named a Distinguished Engineering Professor in the College of Engineering. He also received the Albert E. Carlotti Award and the Vincent and Estelle Murphy Award for Faculty Excellence in Engineering. He joined the URI faculty in He is a licensed professional engineer in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. During his URI career, Wright has been the principal investigator on many multidisciplinary research projects in the areas of water-quality monitoring and modeling of surface water systems. His work has been published in national and international journals. He has been the advisor and mentor to more than 60 graduate students. He received his B.S. in civil engineering from Tufts University in 1973 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in 1978 and 1982.
