(Appointment in Economics.) Founding Dean of the School of Community Economic Development (SCED) at Southern New Hampshire University. SCED provides degree (M.S., M.A Policy, MBA and Ph.D.) and training programs in community economic development, and has educated more than 2,500 practitioners from across the United States and from over 100 countries. Created ongoing academic programs with partners in Tanzania (Open University of Tanzania), the Philippines ( Card Bank of the Philippines & Southeast Asia Interdisciplinary Development Institute), Los Angeles (the Community Development Technology Center), and Cost Rica (EARTH University.) Graduates of SCED build affordable housing, run community development financial institutions, promote microenterprise programs, start social enterprises, run community health and education programs, promote youth development and develop commercial projects and small businesses in low-income communities around the globe. SCED is also home to the Applied Research Center (ARC), the Center for Community Economic Development and Disability, and the Financial Innovations Roundtable. Created the Center for Community Economic Development (CCED) in CCED is a nonprofit organization located at and affiliated with the School of CED. CCED acts as a center of practice in CED. It engages faculty, staff and students in community projects and policy issues and incubates innovative programs that make unique contributions to the field. The Center incubated the Working Capital program which became one of the largest peer lending microenterprise programs in the U.S. The program was spun-off from CCED after 3 years. Founder and Chair of the Financial Innovations Roundtable (2001- present). The Financial Innovations Roundtable develops concrete ideas that link conventional and nontraditional lenders, investors and markets to provide increased access to capital and financial services in low-income communities. The Roundtable also promotes partnerships to implement ideas. The outcomes of the Roundtable are the development of joint programs, tools and approaches to financing development in low-income communities. The Roundtable includes 90 members in the field of finance and related areas. Participants include leaders from conventional financial institutions including
2 banks, mortgage companies, insurance companies and investment firms as well as leaders from public agencies, non-traditional lenders, foundations, pension funds, religious institutions and universities. Drafted legislation to create the New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA), an innovative state-chartered equity fund for community economic development ventures and projects which has been widely replicated. Appointed by Governor John Sununu as the first chairman and served as a board member for 17 years. Founding president (1983) and a current board member of the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund one of the premier Community Development Financial Institutions in the United States Founding board member of Opportunity Finance Network a national trade association of community development finance institutions. Consultant to development finance intermediaries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Founder, with Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Yogurt, of the Stonyfield Entrepreneurship Institute an annual training institute that attracts over 200 socially minded entrepreneurs.
