4 Important Trends Telecommunications costs continue to be reduced Advances in tools (especially virtualization) all but remove regular physical access to compute assets Scale can be achieved on both dedicated and shared assets and be combined securely for solutions Licensing advances remove prior obstacles Monitoring focused on business availability and performance attributes

5 The Virtualization Effect Positively impacting DR solutions QUICK FACT Disasters are not all smoking hole events and statistically speaking downtime is more often a local issue. Regardless of the hypervisor (virtualization) software selected, the concept and design remains the most important element as organizations transition to more virtualized IT systems. QUICK FACT Without Virtualization More emphasis is placed on the physical attributes of each distinct server and this limits or adds costs to most D/R solutions. With Virtualization Computing environments can be abstracted from their physical hosts and the ability to provide local HA and remote HA capabilities becomes less expensive.

6 The Virtualization Effect The other side of the coin Servers get stood up rapidly with no DR or contingency plans built into budget/operational process Asset management systems (ITAM) are often still tied to physical systems Stress is shifted to Storage, storage networks with data pointing to a 3x uplift in requirements Virtualization net/net is more complex when properly configured Application performance management becomes required to better understand net performance

7 Cloud Computing Possible/probable platform for DR TRADITIONAL 1:1 D/R SOLUTION - All Production compute, storage, security and related hardware is duplicated (or contracted for duplication) at an remote location - Tape backup is the medium used to restore applications and data - Testing is performed.. at great expense and rarely - Single biggest challenge is keeping D/R site solution in synch with primary site - Focus is on available when required CLOUD BASED D/R SOLUTION - Assets are not owned and therefore rarely duplicated in a physical manner - Data is replicated over secure network connections to one or more remote locations - Applications may be dedicated on Cloud (IaaS) environments or have thin capability in a many:one environment - Single biggest challenge is over focusing on data replication as the solution - Focus is on always available as required

Clouds do reside in data centers Fundamentals still apply (power, cooling, network, security) Transparent or opaque approach to offering design is important to ascertain as a buyer/consumer SAS70 Type II being replaced with SSAE16 (SOC1/2) Hybrid compute and applications configurations are the new normal

11 Networks Critical to all IT solutions One connection type is not enough Fixed mobile backup and L2TP/tunnel to backup MPLS More bandwidth is never enough Allocation and acceleration will continue to be important Seamless access in failover scenario s is an expected behavior Latency characteristics require tools, planning and testing when introducing hybrid capacity Capability equally important to capacity

12 Security, security and more security More DDOS and other coordinated attack types Sensitivity to security does not equate to better security MDM (mobile device management) critical to security strategy New challenge now with BYOC trending in commercial space Managed Security Services are growing more critical as connection points are growing versus shrinking in the press towards Cloud.
