We are currently putting together another jam packed schedule for 2013 so you shouldn t have any problems in finding a dive that suits you during the year. Remember, to be covered by the BAD insurance the trip must be advertised by the club and paid for through the club account. French Polynesia has banned shark fishing over an area of 1.5 million square miles, covering more than 100 islands in five large archipelagos, including Tahiti. Meanwhile the Cook Islands has announced a similar ban covering 756,000 square miles. French Polynesia ran a moratorium on shark fishing from 2006, with an exemption allowing takes of mako sharks. Shark finning in the region increased markedly from the late 1990s, in response to demand from Asia. DDRC takes on national role (thanks to Plymouth s Diving Diseases Research Centre (DDRC) has taken over staffing of the British Hyperbaric Association s 24-hour, all-year National Diving Accident Helpline. The line, , has been run for many years by the Institute of Naval Medicine. The Institute has withdrawn, says the DDRC, because changes in military requirements mean that the Royal Navy no longer feel they can provide the logistical capability to continue this valued expert service. Scottish calls to the helpline continue to be handled by Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on For diving emergencies at sea, the Coastguard remains the first point of contact, and in a life-threatening emergency ashore divers should call 999 3

4 B.A.D. SPECIALITY OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY EQUIPMENT Running on Saturday 12 th January this month s speciality of the month is the PADI Equipment Spec Course. Usually 50 but because it s our spec of the month we are doing it for just 40! Don t miss a dive due to a scuba gear issue. Whether it's a blown o-ring, regulator problem, wetsuit tear or a broken fin strap, you can learn how to manage basic scuba equipment adjustments. As a PADI Equipment Specialist, you are prepared for the basic scuba equipment maintenance, care and adjustments you'll encounter every day. In addition, you'll learn interesting background information about how your gear works, how it s repair and other information that helps you with your equipment investment. The more you know about how your dive gear works, the more Comfortable you are with it Performance you get from it You can care for it You learn: Review the theory, principles and operation of scuba diving equipment Learn about routine, recommended care and maintenance procedures, and equipment storage How to overcome common problems with equipment and recommended professional maintenance procedures (may include a demonstration of repair procedures) Gain simple suggestions for comfortable equipment configurations and an introduction to new gear (may include optional confined water dive to try new or unfamiliar equipment) CALLING ALL FUTURE PADI PROFESSIONALS! If you love Scuba Diving and think you would enjoy helping others to experience the underwater world, then read on If you ve been in the shop or on a course recently, you may have noticed a number of Dive Master Candidates being put through their training. To get to this point in their Diving career, they progressed through their Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue Courses. As qualified Dive Masters, they will be able to assist with teaching a range of PADI Scuba Diving courses. They could even go on to independently teach Discover Scuba Diving experiences in the pool as a DSD Leader. Their training will take them on to becoming PADI Professionals. For many, this will be a role that they reserve only for their free time. Many hold full time jobs and come from all walks of life. All Dive Masters, Assistant Instructors and Instructors at BAD do it for the love of it! We are all passionate about Scuba diving and want to help introduce others to the amazing underwater world. Becoming a PADI Dive Master requires completion of a comprehensive training course. You will find your knowledge increases and you diving skills improve dramatically! It is challenging and well worth it. Dive Masters develop skills that they use in their everyday life. Improved confidence, presentation and organisational skills to name just a few. As the number of people wanting to learn to Scuba dive increases at Bolton Area Divers, we are looking for more of our recreational divers to become PADI Pros to work with us. We are offering a fast track discounted training route to anyone interested in becoming a Dive Master with us at Bolton Area Divers. This is available to any divers that currently hold their Advanced Open Water or Rescue Diver qualification. A DIVE IN THE POT 27th January 2013 (Trip Organiser: Simon Grimshaw , simon@grimshaw.com) Simon Needs FULL PAYMENT for this trip now please A 40m dry dive for just 30 Simon has organised another exciting trip to the North West Recompression Chamber at Murrayfield on 27 th January This trip is for qualified open water divers and above only and will include a talk on Hyperbaric medicine before a 40m dry dive in the pot. Bring your computers! It ll be the best dive profile of your life! OBAN Saturday 13 th to 14 th April 2013 (Trip Organiser: Bolton Area Divers , diving@boltonareadivers.co.uk) Deposits Due Now Please We ve booked our next trip to Oban for April Places usually fill fast for the first trip of the year so if you want to join us please pay your boat fees early! I have booked 10 places so far on Gannet. If these get filled then we ll book additional places on the Silver Swift, Urchin or Puffin Ribs. First to pay will get the places. The trip will once again incorporate an Advanced Open Water course as well as all the usual diving and events for club members and non-divers. This trip is an excellent opportunity for you to get some supervised sea diving experience with our instructors and staff. So whatever level you are at you are more than welcome to join us. There are plenty shore dives for any Open Water Divers that wish to join us; or there s the rib/hard boat dive to the Breda and Ard na Cuille on the Saturday morning for anyone Advanced or above. If you fancy doing the Advanced Open Water course whilst in Oban we can do it for 250. This will include all your 5 dives, boat fees, air fills, crew packs, PIC cards and all instruction. We can also do other specialty courses whilst in Oban - give the shop a ring or us for more info. For the divers (not on the AOW course) the cost will be 60 for 2 dives off the Gannet, or Silver Swift, digs at the Anchorage ( 15 per night) and your beer money (???). Divers who are not club members must also pay the 10 organisation fee if you want your boat and digs organising. Boat and digs fees must be paid up front. Boat through the shop, digs by cash to Matt. We will be going up on the Friday night and staying over at The Anchorage on Friday and Saturday nights. Diving will be off the boats in the morning (Usually an 8:00am kick off) so we will be back in port for about 2:00pm so we will have time to do other things. 5

6 Diving in Cornwall 2013 A couple of weeks ago, we sent an asking if anyone was interested in diving in Cornwall next year. Thanks to all who responded we have been flooded with positive responses! Watch this space for more details It looks like this will definitely happen and we are all very excited about it We will make some more enquiries and provide you with possible dive sites / schedules, dates and costs. Hopefully, there will be something to suit all. In response to demand, we will look to offer the PADI Advanced Open Water course and others Speciality courses there for those who want to continue their diving education. For those who are just looking to dive for pleasure, there should be plenty to keep you content! MALTA 6th to 13th May 2013 (Trip Organiser: Matt McMinn, , matt@boltonareadivers.co.uk) Deposits Due Now Please I m now taking bookings for the May trip in The deal we have found is for: Return flights from Manchester 30kg baggage allowance + 5kg hand luggage Accommodation at a local Hotel (B&B) Transfers to and from the hotel Jeep hire whilst in Malta (req d to get around) All the above for just 450 (as of 1 st Dec) I ll also organise for you: (extra payable locally) Equipment rental in Malta or through B.A.D. Diving packages in Malta Gas mixes Only additional costs are: Price of diving courses Jeep hire fuel (required to get around in Malta) Food and beer Because the prices are fluctuating daily (usually up rather than down!), to keep the trip as cheap as possible I will be making the first booking at the end of December. The later you leave it the more costly it may be. If you could transfer the money to me or the club account or drop cash off at the shop I will make a group booking for everyone. The trip is an ideal opportunity for you to just come to chill out and do some awesome diving or you can do any courses including Open Water Referral upgrade, Advanced Open Water or even Tec. If you re up for it please let me know ASAP so I can prime the dive centre in Malta and I can reserve kit and jeeps for us. 6

7 RED SEA th July to 3rd August 2013 (Trip Organiser: Bolton Area Divers , * * Only 1 place remaining * * Get Wrecked is certain to satisfy any diver interested in wreck diving in the Red Sea. With so many wrecks here in the UK, we are a tough bunch of divers to please. Yet the astounding quality and scope of wrecks in the Northern Red Sea will not leave you disappointed. Shipping down through Suez, the narrow slip of sea that separates Hurgada and the Sinai is peppered with islands and reef tips that have been the downfall of many a captain. But these maritime mishaps have left a legacy that serves up the most fascinating and enjoyable warm water wreck dives you could hope to experience. This trip will be Northern Get Wrecked Itinerary, on board Whirlwind, and we ll be diving the wrecks such the Giannis D and Kimon M at the infamous Abu Nuhas and the most dive wreck in the Red Sea, the Thistlegorm! Cost is just 1045 plus Manchester flight supplements. The earlier you book, the cheaper the supplements will be. Scapa 2013 has been booked for Saturday 14th to Saturday 21st September A month earlier than normal.... Total cost of the trip is max 500 which will include your accommodation on board Sunrise for the week, 2 dives per day, breakfast and lunch on board, your ferry crossing and your hotel cost for the Friday night in Thurso. I need 150 deposit per person to book your place so I can then pay the deposits to the skipper. Final payment will be due 8 weeks prior to departure. You can pay me by cash at the shop or BACS transfer if you prefer. There are experience and qualification prerequisites for this trip which I will discuss with anyone who wants to come on the trip. So if you want to come get you re your money out and get to the shop sharpish! On your marks.... get set.... go!!!
