3 1 User Setup Documentation Overview Purpose: This document outlines the user setup requirements to successfully run Middlebury Interactive Languages curriculum and achieve an optimal learning experience. Please contact our Client Support department with any specific questions or concerns related to your setup and these requirements. 4 2 User Setup Documentation Student Workstations Technical Hardware & Configuration Operating System Required Plugins Recommended Browsers Supported/Required Desktop/laptop any type that can run standard Mac OSX and Windows installations PC: 2.33GHz or faster x86-compatible processor MAC: Intel Core Duo 1.33GHz or above Minimum display setting 1280x1024 (SXGA) resolution; lower resolution may require scrolling 128MB Graphics Memory & Sound card Cookies enabled Javascript enabled Netbook & Chrome book supported when using Middlebury Course Administration Platform and meeting browser and minimum resolution requirements specified above. Note: If using another supported LMS, device must meet our minimum browser/resolution requirements as well as LMS- specified requirements. ipad supported when using Middlebury Course Administration platform. Note: Not all courses are ipad compatible for SY Contact our Client Support team for more information. Android Tablets not supported at this time Mac OS 10.6 and higher Windows XP and higher Some distributions of Linux which support Flash 11+ have been successful, but it is not officially supported Note: Any desktop virtualization (e.g. Citrix) must support the minimum standards. The following are required: Adobe Flash Player QuickTime 7+ for Aventa customers Note: Browser plugins (e.g. Java) should be up-to-date. Latest browser versions are always preferred. The following are supported: Google Chrome 6.0+ preferred browser Safari 5.0+ Mozilla Firefox 4.0+ Internet Explorer 8.0+

5 3 User Setup Documentation Technical Accessories Supported/Required The following accessories are required for listening/recording: Headset with microphone compatible with your workstation Refer to pictures below Combination Jack (headphone/mic) notice the three bands separating the four contact areas (ground, left, right, mono input) TRRS mini-jack (3.5mm) cable (integrated mic) USB Headset Heamini-jack (3.5mm) cable Headphone/Mic Individual Jacks TRS mini-jacck (3.5mm) cable

6 4 User Setup Documentation Technical ipad Access 1. Download/ Install App 2. Launch App & Log In to Your Course Supported/Required Clients using Middlebury Course Administration Platform have access to ipad compatible courses by downloading/installing Middlebury Interactive app. This app has a built-in browser that provides full course functionality, including microphone capability. For a complete list of ipad compatible courses for SY13-14, contact MIL Client Support. Note: When attempting to access our courses on ipad using Safari browser or within another LMS browser, the recording feature will not work; and therefore is not supported. 1. Go to the Apple App Store 2. Search for " Middlebury Interactive" Two App choices will appear: Middlebury Interactive Spanish Middlebury Interactive French 3. Select appropriate language app. Note: If studying another language, choose one of these apps to access our browser and your language course. 4. Click " FREE" 5. Click " INSTALL APP" 6. If you already have an Apple ID Password, enter it. Otherwise, create a new one. 1. Find and open the newly installed Middlebury App. 2. Click the "Browser" icon Note: Click other icons to practice level 1 Spanish or French content 3. Log into your Middlebury Interactive course by entering your: Username Password

7 5 User Setup Documentation Connectivity Technical Internet Bandwidth Speed Firewall Ports Supported/Required Both wired & wireless is supported speed permitting Wired Wireless The following is minimum speed requirements: 5+ Mbps preferred per user The following ports need to be open: 80 (http) 443 (https) 1935 (for audio recording) routed to recording.middil.com Whitelisted URL/IP If your school site restricts web traffic, please add the following domains to your content filtering whitelist: FOR PRE 2013 PLATFORM USERS (e.g. PGLMS, BrainHoney) cdn.middil.com presents a varying IP address. 8 6 User Setup Documentation Teacher Workstation Technical Same as Student Workstation Projector/LCD TV Connection Refer to previous section Supported/Required A projector is useful for doing class activities together. However, if a blended/hybrid model is not the implementation, a projector would not be necessary. Projector should meet the same minimum screen resolution requirements Audio output/input and other requirements should follow individual workstation requirements Classroom Setup Refer to next section for detailed information Although there is not a specific desk arrangement suggestion, it is important that desks are arranged to ensure the following: Students are able to work independently (depending on implementation) Students are able to work on collaborative projects (depending on implementation) Students have sufficient space to use a keyboard and mouse and to record speaking without disturbing others too much Teacher can easily observe student progress and can ensure students are "on task" Teacher can easily observe students during test-taking to ensure that there is no cheating Recommended: Printer Access for teacher workstation to print corecontent references (e.g. vocabulary lists) embedded in the online courses.

9 7 User Setup Documentation Classroom Setup Classroom setup for effective use of Middlebury Interactive Online Courses will depend on the implementation model being followed and student access to computers. Implementation Models Self-study: World language teacher is not present when student uses the program. For course credit, an online world language teacher grades student work and provides feedback. Blended: Middlebury Interactive curriculum is used as core curriculum in a blend of independent online coursework with regular teacher interaction. Various in-class and lab rotation models are effective with ongoing instructional assistance provided by lab, classroom or virtual teachers. Supplemental or Technology-Rich Instruction: World language instruction is teacher-directed and Middlebury courses are used to support and enhance the instruction. Students access the online program in classroom or at a computer lab. Build a Language Learning Environment The optimal setup will be dynamic and change from time to time to encourage immersive, student lead, and teacher supported language learning. Whole group, small group, pairs and independent work can take place within a class period.

10 8 User Setup Documentation Sample Class Routine for Blended Implementation Model: 1. Presentation of lesson/concepts (Teacher-directed whole group or station) 2. World Language Journal Goals for the day (Independent work) 3. Online course work (Independent work) 4. Reflect and document work completed. Highlight something learned. Prepare for sharing daily/weekly sharing (with a partner or small group) 5. World language game or other fun activity (with a partner or small group) 6. Whole group sharing Teacher Presentation Station To help facilitate transition from whole group to small group to independent study activities, it is beneficial to have a teacher presentation station with a projection screen that is clearly visible to all students. Independent Stations Independent stations can be setup in a variety of ways: rows, tables with back-to-back stations. In addition, it is strongly suggested to setup a recording area in a semi private space as students often feel self-conscious when doing recorded assignments. This will also help lessen background noise in student recordings. Displays Along with workstation setup, allowing students and teachers to display their work and culturally relevant information will be help build an inviting and conducive langrage learning environment.
