2 Pre-course Letter Dear Participant Nursing Education & Training has the pleasure to provide an organized Critical Care Course in five modules that focuses on orienting the target group about ICU in addition to enabling them to work in an effective, safe, and independent manner. We hope that the nurses can integrate and transform the accumulated knowledge into improved nursing care provided to all patients in ICU at King Hussein Cancer Center. 3 INTRODUCTION This course is designed to provide the registered nurses working in ICU with the required knowledge and skills about safe and effective practice. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an overview of critical care, including various topics that enrich the participant s knowledge and skills. The course will focus on providing comprehensive, practical information for developing the participant s competences that will help in developing their career. OBJECTIVE: At the end of this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Identify clinical inquiry as an essential nursing competency. 2. Discuss the unique nature of critical care nursing research. 3. Discuss the current state-of-the-science of critical care nursing. Domains of Critical Practice: 1. Diagnosing and managing life-sustaining physiologic functions in unstable patients. 2. Skilled know-how of managing crises 3. Providing comfort measures for the critically ill 4. Caring for patient families 5. Preventing hazards in a technological environment 6. Facing death: end-of-life care and decision-making 7. Communicating and negotiating multiple clinical, ethical and practical perspectives. 8. Monitoring quality and managing breakdown Fax ext 2343 Page 3

4 COURSE OUTLINES - Anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurology, renal &endocrine systems - Assessment of cardiovascular, respiratory, neurology, renal &endocrine systems - Hemodynamic monitoring - Coronary artery disease - Respiratory diseases - Neurology diseases - Renal diseases - Endocrine diseases related to critical care - Critical Care Medication use and preparation - Critical Care Issues: organ donation and organ transplantation TARGET AUDIENCE Registered nurses working in ICU DURATION -Three working days TEACHING STRATEGIES: Teaching learning methods utilized to assist the participants in achieving course objectives include: Independent study (reading, thinking); Lectures Role play Class room presentation Discussion (seminar approach) Audiovisuals. EVALUATION STRATGIES Pre and post test Reflective discussion Class work and activities Home assignments SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM COMPLETION To successfully complete this course, the participants have to: - Set for the pretest and to pass the post test with a minimum score of 70% - Actively participate in the course activities. - Share in the group work - Attend not less than 85% of the course sessions. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of this course, the participant will be able to: - Confidence and competence in leading others and managing critical care units. - Reflected high quality performance during work. - Utilize evidence based studies for improving their practice in critical care units.
