2 Pre-course Letter Dear Participant: We are delighted to have you join us in this nursing oncology training course! As part of the Hospital Staff development Programs, our goal is to provide the participants with comprehensive knowledge and help them in developing excellent skills in oncology nursing that will help in developing their career. We are going to explore topics that include overview of cancer, common cancers associated with adults and pediatrics in Jordan, cancer treatment modalities, assessment of oncology patients, symptom management, and professional issues in cancer nursing. We trust that your questions and concerns will be addressed in our time together. Be sure to ask for clarification as we proceed to make sure that you do not leave with any unanswered questions. As your colleagues, we welcome you and hope that you will enjoy yourself during this course and beyond. One of the most important course objectives is to have fun! 3 INTRODUCTION The Clinical Nurse Coordinators and nurses play a major role in working with the team, coordinating care and ensuring that patients receive all the services they need in a safe manner. Clinical Nurse Coordinator and nurses work in collaboration with all members of the multidisciplinary team in an effort to provide a high quality comprehensive cancer service for people with cancer and their families. This course ensures that Clinical Nurse Coordinators and nurses will have the essential knowledge and skills in oncology and in professional issues in cancer nursing. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course aims to provide the generalist and advanced practice cancer nurses (clinical nurse coordinators and nurses) with comprehensive knowledge and skills to meet their job requirements. It will deliver a comprehensive review of the knowledge required to manage the oncology cases and give an opportunity to acquire the skill needed to deal with different tasks to provide holistic, clinical, autonomous and timely care for patients. It will provide education, leadership and utilize research to reflect the roles of the clinical nurse coordinators and other nurses in improving service and developing nursing practice. Course Objectives At the end of this course, the participant will be able to: 1. Discuss the major concepts of quality of life. 2. Identify different treatment modalities in oncology. 3. Identify the concept of protective mechanisms in oncology. 4. Discuss the alterations in cardiopulmonary function. 5. Identify and manage oncologic emergencies. 6. Describe health promotion measures toward cancer prevention and early detection. 7. Discuss the professional performance components and ethical issues in cancer nursing. 8. Discuss and apply the main components of research in nursing. 9. Assume a leadership role in implementing a change in practice. 10. 7 Oncology Nursing Oncology Nurse Role & Job Description Cancer Nursing Education & Career Ladder Decision Making Holistic Patient Care Approach Principles of pharmacology TARGET AUDIENCE Clinical coordinators & registered nurses with one year experience and more DURATION - 6 Months (25 weeks, 21 days theory and 104 days clinical) The 1 st week theory then one day theory and 4 days clinical/week for 2 weeks, then one week clinical and so on TEACHING STRATEGIES: Teaching learning methods utilized to assist the participants in achieving course objectives include: Independent study (reading, thinking); Lectures Mini Class Demonstration Role Play Case Studies Group Work Discussion (seminar approach) Fax ext 2343 Page 7

Taoka, RN, MN, AOCN Presentation Handouts EVALUATION STRATGIES Pre and post test Reflective discussion Class work and activities Home assignments SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM COMPLETION To successfully complete this course, the participants have to: - Set for the pretest and to pass the post test scoring 70% minimum - Actively participate in the course activities. - Share in the group work - Attend not less than 85% of the course sessions. - Attend not less than 90% of the clinical days.
