5 Aims: OUR VISION AND MISSION Subject Specific Aims & Objectives The postgraduate course in M.D. Physiology should enable a medical graduate to be: A good medical teacher in Physiology, practicing the required skills of teaching. A competent Physiologist with research acumen to conduct basic and applied research to alleviate disease processes. Objectives: 1. The postgraduate student should be able to discuss the basic principles, mechanisms and homeostatic control of all the functions of human body as a whole. He should have a comprehensive knowledge of General and systemic physiology. 2. The student should be able to apply the physiological basis to health and disease processes affecting various organ systems. 3. The student should develop an attitude towards research processes and must be able to evaluate and use the teaching techniques and resources most effectively. Instructions to PG student This logbook is intended to be a record of your academic activities, experience and practical training during the period of your tenure in this department. You are requested to make a note of all your postings including all the activities under respective headings. You are responsible for getting the logbook signed by your teacher instructor. The log book should be regularly signed and kept up-to-date. The purpose of the logbook is to have an audit of your performance in following areas: a. Academic sphere This would include punctuality and sincerity in attending PG academic activity. It will include the record of case presentation, assignment, group discussion, journal, death review meeting, clinico-pathological and clinico-radiological meeting clinical postings etc. you are supposed to record the academic activity in the logbook where you have contributed activity (you have presented a case, review article from the journal etc.) and also your presence in a particular session. All record should be maintained in a chronological order. b. Dissertation: For degree course, dissertation project work is an important milestone. You are supposed to record your dissertation work in step wise manner and get signature of the guide. The purpose of dissertation is to give insight in research methodology and to record evidence based scientific observations. The dissertation research work has to be in prospective manner and the quantum of work done every three monthly should be recorded. c. Skill development: We expect you to develop skill in relation with your speciality. Each department has enlisted certain procedures/operative work of their speciality to be learnt in each training year session. You have to record this in your logbook regularly. d. Recent Advances and CME: We want you to be abreast with recent advances in medical field. We will encourage you to attend CME programmes and conferences. 6 You are supposed to attend; present papers in conferences; workshops and keep a record of it regularly. e. Personal achievements: Please record personal achievements in the form of award or prizes during your tenure in the department. Please furnish the proof of your achievements to the departmental head who in turn would acknowledge it in this logbook. f. Human values: In your postgraduate studies, we want to emphasize importance of human values. Our vision/mission is to strive for excellence not only in the academic sphere but also in your day to day dealing with needy patients and/or community. We would wish a department to record your positive values in the field of patient care and interpersonal relationship. Any award, prize achieved by PG student also should be mentioned in logbook with the proof of achievement. Instructions for Dissertation Work 1. Every candidate pursuing MD degree course is required to carry out work on a selected research project under the guidance of a recognized post graduate teacher. The result of such a work shall be submitted in the form of a dissertation. 2. The dissertation is aimed to train a post graduate student in research methods and techniques. It includes identification of a problem, formulation of hypothesis, search and review of literature, getting acquainted with recent advances, designing of a research study, collection of data, critical analysis, comparison of results and drawing conclusions. 3. Every candidate shall submit to the registrar (Academic) of the university in the prescribed proforma, a synopsis containing particulars of proposed dissertation work within three months from the date of commencement of the course on or before the dates notified by the university. The synopsis shall be sent through the proper channel. 4. Such synopsis shall be submitted to the university within three months of taking admission. The synopsis will be reviewed and the dissertation topic will be registered by the university. No change in the dissertation topic or guide shall be made without prior approval of the university. 5. The dissertation should be written as per the guidelines laid down by MUHS. 6. The written text of dissertation shall be not less than 50 pages and shall not exceed 150 pages excluding references, tables, questionnaires and other annexures. It should be neatly typed in double line spacing on one side of paper (A4 size, ) and bound properly. Spiral binding should be avoided. The dissertation shall be certified by the guide, head of the department, and head of the institution. 7. Five copies of dissertation thus prepared shall be submitted to the Registrar (Evaluation), six months before final examination on or before the dates notified by the university. The dissertation shall be evaluated by three examiners appointed by the university. Approval of dissertation work is an essential pree condition for a candidate to appear in the university examination failing which the candidate will have to make the necessary modifications so as to appear in the next university examination. Theory Examination (400 marks) ---- The written examination consists of four papers of 100 marks. Each paper will be of three hours duration. Questions on recent advances may be asked in any or all papers. Paper I: Paper II: Paper III: Paper IV: General physiology, Cellular physiology, applied Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biostatistics, History of Physiology, Comparative physiology. Nerve muscle, Blood, Cardiovascular system, Respiratory system, Gastrointestinal system, Renal physiology. Endocrine, special senses, Nervous system, Reproductive system. Exercise physiology, Nutrition, Recent advances, Medical education technology, Stress relaxation, Medical ethics & Applied physiology. Each theory paper will consists of: Long Essay type questions marks = 50 Short Essay type questions marks = Total marks 100 B.
