Telephone: /9 Fax: In t r o d u c t i o n The School of Nursing was launched in August 2011 under the auspices of the College of Health Sciences. The philosophy of the School of Nursing recognizes the worth and dignity of all people and is sensitive to the diversity of cultural and ethnic backgrounds represented in its students population. It values excellence and innovation in preserving and advancing the art and science of nursing in the scholarly domains of nursing education, practice and research. The values would be pursued through personal interactions and the integration of technology, while embracing cultural and academic diversity. Education for nursing should be value-focused, providing guidance for future practice, yet reality based to prepare practitioners for the current health care practices. Nursing education equips the student with cognitive, affective and psychomotor competencies integral to professional nursing practice. Vision The School of Nursing will continuously re-establish itself in ways that would distinguish the School among its peers, with innovation in academics, faculty practice, research and an unparalled focus on activities that benefit the community and by extension, the society at large. Mission To educate lifelong learners who have knowledge and skills relevant to rapidly changing environment. To establish innovative advanced practice models that define and respond to health care trends, by continuing to establish inter- and multi-disciplinary practice partnerships both internal and external, that are replicable in a variety of health settings to benefit individuals and impact society. To improve the health of individuals, families as well as the consumer centeredness and productivity of health care delivery through discovery, dissemination of knowledge and generalizable interventions. Objectives 1. To establish an institution for excellence in nursing education. 2. To provide the atmosphere and opportunities for students to become excellent nurses who are self-oriented, motivated and responsible citizens. 3. To empower the students confidence and a sense of responsibility to achieve academic and professional goals. 4. To apply advanced scientific knowledge to the nursing field. 5. To help the students practice and teach others principles of healthy living The School of Nursing offers the following programmes: Bachelor of Science in Nursing Master of Science in Nursing Maternal and Neonatal Health. Bachelor of Science, Nursing The Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree programme was launched in 1998/1999 academic year under the Department of Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Now it is under the School of Nursing in the College of Health Sciences. This is a four-year programme geared towards producing a graduate nurse who will approach issues with holistic global perspective and critically analyze problems which integrate theory and practice in the assessment and provision of healthcare. The graduate of this programme is expected to be proficient in a variety of settings which include provision of care to patients, management of nursing practice, teaching and undertaking research activities. 389

Apply the process of critical reasoning in managing illness by skillfully and safely administering holistic nursing care. 2. Participate in management of health services. 3. Participate in multidisciplinary assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation of healthcare of an individual, family and community. 4. Critically review and apply research findings in healthcare as well as plan and execute health related research. 5. Apply concepts and principles of teaching and learning for individuals and groups in nursing education institutions or in healthcare facilities. 6. Contribute actively in the prevention of disease, promotion and maintenance of good health. 7. Apply principles of management in institutional and community settings. 8. Apply principles and strategies of self-directed learning throughout professional life. 9. Maintain the highest professional and ethical standards in nursing. 10. Plan and implement educational programmes for health workers and the community. 11. Adapt to, participate in and act as agents of change. 12. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions used in dealing with community health problems. 13. Demonstrate ability to evaluate own performance, plan and implement own education. For admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme the candidate must meet the common requirements for entry into the University, as stipulated by the Joint Admissions Board. In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum cut off points for the year as determined from the following subject cluster drawn from the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education structure: Biology Chemistry Physics/Mathematics English/Kiswahili Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by Moi University Senate may also be considered for admission. Candidates with relevant ordinary diploma from recognized institutions, and who fulfill all other University entrance requirements may also be considered for admission, provided the School of Nursing Board recommends, and the Senate approves. Such candidates must have a minimum of credit pass in ordinary diploma programme. All courses in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme shall be compulsory unless the School Board recommends exemption and is approved by Senate. The programme emphasizes the cross-relationship between parallel disciplines, such as physiology and anatomy, or at the clinical level, neurology and psychiatry. Vertical integration emphasizes the inter-relationship between biomedical sciences, and clinical sciences and allows such elements to be taught at every stage with progressively changing emphasis as students proceed through the programme. In addition to integration, the community-oriented approach is designed to enable students acquire an understanding of the health needs of the various Kenyan Communities through Community Based Education and Service (COBES). Thus, students will understand the interplay between factors responsible for health status of society and learn the important skills of disease prevention and health promotion. Design of the Curriculum Integration Since a human being functions as an integrated whole, the programme has been designed to allow for both horizontal and vertical integration. Integration also entails multi-professional training. Horizontal integration: This emphasizes the cross relationship between parallel disciplines, such as physiology and anatomy, or at the clinical level, neurology and psychiatry. Vertical integration: Emphasizes the inter-relationship between biomedical sciences, and clinical sciences. Vertical integration allows such elements to be taught at every stage with progressively changing emphasis as students proceed through the programme. 390

4 School of Nursing Community and Research Orientation In addition to integration, the community oriented approach is designed to enable students acquire an understanding of the health needs of the various Kenyan Communities through Community Based Education and Service (COBES). Thus, students will understand the interplay between factors responsible for health status of society and learn the important skills of disease prevention and health promotion. Structure The Curriculum is organized in three spiraling levels running through the four year duration. The first level focuses on basic and biomedical sciences. The next level is on pathology which leads to the level of clinical practice. This structure provides for integration of theory and practice. Admission Requirements All candidates admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme in the school of medicine must meet the following requirements:- i) They must meet the common requirements for entry into the University. ii) In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum cut off points for the year as determined from one of the following subject clusters drawn from the original Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education structure. Category A Biology Chemistry Physics/Mathematics English/Kiswahili Category B Biological Sciences Physical Sciences Mathematics English/Kiswahili Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by Moi University Senate may also be considered for admission. Candidates with relevant ordinary diploma from recognized institutions, and who fulfil all other University entrance requirements may be considered for admission, provided the school of medicine Board recommends, and the Senate approves it. Teaching/Learning Methods A variety of teaching/learning methods as approved by Senate shall be used but emphasis shall be on problem based learning, small group tutorials, student centered learning, self-directed learning and community based education and service. Duration The duration of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme shall extend over a period of not less than four academic years, unless Senate on the recommendation of the school Board approves exemption. Unit System The University unit system of courses as applied at the school of medicine will apply as follows:- One (1) unit of study =16 hours of lectures Or 32 hours of tutorials Or 48 hours of practicals/self-directed learning (SDL) The Award of the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing The B.Sc in Nursing shall be awarded to that candidate who successfully completes the programme as outlined in this curriculum. The BSc. Nursing degree shall not be classified. The BScN program forms the next step in the evolution of the School of Nursing Sciences, a Master of Science in Nursing (MSc.N) in Maternal and Neonatal Health was introduced in September 2006 and has graduated 10 students to date. This will ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the provision of midwifery. This curriculum focuses on advanced nursing care of child bearing women and their babies. This is the second postgraduate nursing (MSc.N) in Kenya. Kenya has an urgent need for nurses with advanced education in maternal-neonatal health, especially in achieving the 392

6 School of Nursing Millennium Development Goals 4 & 5 i.e. reduce child mortality and improve maternal health respectively. To nursing this means providing specialized maternal & neonatal care. Graduates of this program will be prepared to work towards accomplishing these goals. Goal of the Programme The goal of the MScN programme is to produce Nurse Specialists who can promote reproductive health of individuals and provide advanced midwifery and neonatal services to women and their families. Broad Objectives At the end of the Programme, the graduate will be able to: 1. Provide care to clients/ patients with obstetric/neonatal problems by applying specialist competencies in both hospital and community setting. 2. Plan and execute priority research in nursing and related areas. 3. Provide leadership in nursing, in the health service provision in the community through education, advocacy, change management and policy development. Roles and Functions of the Graduates The graduates of the master degree Programme in nursing will be adequately prepared to undertake the following roles and functions: 1. Provide specialized maternal and neonatal nursing care. 2. Develop, implement and evaluate research utilization projects that lead to innovative health care practices and evaluation of outcomes. 3. Co-ordinate health care provision through multidisciplinary and intersectoral collaboration. 4. Conduct essential health research disseminate the findings. 5. Provide leadership, to nursing staff and other health professionals. 6. Promote professionalism in nursing practice and engage in continuing education. Admission Requirements Common rules and regulations of Moi University shall apply and in addition the applicants for the programme must: 1. Be holders of the Bsc.Nursing degree of Moi University or its equivalent from recognized universities. 2. Be registered or eligible for registration as a nurse by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
