1 REGISTERED NURSE - CRITICAL CARE NURSING Program Outline Major: RNCC Length: 350 Hours Delivery: 1 Semester Credential: Ontario College Graduate Certificate Effective: Location: Barrie Start: Varies (Barrie) Description Students in this program are provided with advanced theoretical and clinical knowledge to competently practice in critical care settings. A combination of classroom instruction, simulation lab practice and clinical placement are offered to advance the student s professional nursing practice in critical care settings. Emphasis is placed on advancing critical thinking, care planning, and leadership skills. Career Opportunities Graduates of this program will be qualified to work within their scope of practice in the critical care setting. Program Learning Outcomes The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to: create an environment of safe practice by performing competent and holistic care for patients experiencing multiple critical conditions according to the Standards for Critical Care Nursing in Ontario and the National Critical Care Nursing Standards; integrate theoretical knowledge, high-level assessment skills, evidence informed practice, judgment and critical thinking into treatment modalities and nursing interventions for critically ill patients; Page 1 of 5
2 practice according to the professional and ethical standards of nursing emphasizing cultural sensitivity with diverse patients; collaborate with patient, family and the interprofessional health care team in planning care for patients who are critically ill; justify change in care according to altered patient status and responses to therapy; prepare a care plan according to advanced assessment findings including lab values and diagnostic results to adequately implement interventions for critically ill patients; utilize sustainable practices minimizing the environmental footprint consistent with the highest standards of practice in the critical care setting; examine the concepts underpinning social entrepreneurship to gain a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities in critical care. The Program Progression: Varies Intake - Barrie Admission Requirements: Applicants must have successfully completed a diploma or degree in nursing from an accredited nursing education program. Applicants must also hold current registration with the nursing regulatory body in their home province/state and or country. Applicants for whom English is a foreign language must provide proof of language proficiency. Please refer to Georgian s English Language Proficiency policy 2.5. Selection Process: Applicants may be required to submit a current letter from an employer s human resource department verifying the number of hours worked. Selection will be based on proof of 1500 hours in an acute care setting. Page 2 of 5
3 Additional Information: Applicants must have up to date immunization records in compliance with the Public Hospital Act and current level HCP CPR. ** CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECK ** Placement agencies require an up-to-date clear criminal reference check and vulnerable sector check prior to going out on placement. Students should obtain their criminal reference three months prior to placement; checks conducted earlier may not be considered current. As some jurisdictions require longer lead-time for processing, please check with the program coordinator to ensure you allow for sufficient turn-around time. It is the students responsibility to provide the completed document prior to placement start. NOTE: Individuals who have been charged or convicted criminally and not pardoned will be prohibited from proceeding to a clinical or work placement. RNRS1048 Critical Care Nursing 2: Coronary Care Part Hours This course provides an introduction to cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, basic cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation and appropriate interventions, cardiac assessment, Page 3 of 5
4 and acute coronary syndromes. It is designed to provide the RN with the knowledge and skills required to deliver care to cardiac patients in a variety of settings. RNRS1049 Critical Care Nursing: Coronary Care Part Hours Students are provided with the advanced knowledge and skills required in critical care settings: Basic 12 lead EKG interpretation, advanced dysrhythmia interpretation and appropriate interventions. P- RNRS1048 Critical Care Nursing 2: Coronary Care Part 1 or P- RNRS1003 RN Coronary Care: Part 1 RNRS1050 Critical Care Nursing Hours Students are provided with the foundation of knowledge related to respiratory and pathological conditions including pulmonary pressures, lung volumes, compliance, resistance, ventilation, perfusion, diffusion, respiratory control and work of breathing. RNRS1051 Critical Care Nursing Hours This course provides the foundation of knowledge related to neurological physiology and major neurological pathological conditions. RNRS1052 Critical Care Nursing Hours Students are provided with the foundation of knowledge related to gastrointestinal and endocrine physiology and major pathological conditions. RNRS1053 Critical Care Nursing Simulation 28.0 Hours Students participate in integrated case based simulated scenarios that include simulated critical care patients in a realistic ICU environment. This practice component provides opportunities for students to demonstrate the knowledge, clinical skills, judgment, and critical thinking skills required in a critical care setting with the goal of increasing confidence and competence while learning the crucial elements of caring for critically ill patients.
