1 Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment Information Packet Prepared by Hughes Springs High School and Northeast Texas Community College Fall 2009 This packet is intended as an overview of the Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment Program and students/parents must refer to related high school and college documents for detailed information and guidelines. For more information contact: Heather McGregor Anna Elliott High School Counselor NTCC Director of Dual Credit Tolida Teddleton NTCC Naples-Omaha Center Director Definitions Dual Credit: A course for which the student receives BOTH high school credit and college credit. The granting of high school credit for a college course is entirely up to the high school. Students may receive advanced measures credit for the Distinguished Achievement Program for these classes. Concurrent Enrollment: A course for which the student receives only college credit. In some cases (at the discretion of the high school) students may receive advanced measures credit for the Distinguished Achievement Program for these classes. Special Note: Students and parents should be aware that they are enrolling in college-level courses taught by college faculty and will receive no special consideration because they are still in high school. The decision to award high school credit rests solely with the local independent school district; NTCC is responsible only for the awarding of college credit. Eligibility Requirements Grade level: must have completed the sophomore year of high school Eligible Assessment Scores: TAKS English Language Arts (ELA) score of 2200 AND writing subscore of 3 (for reading and writing intensive college courses), TAKS Math score of 2200 for math or math-related college courses, OR SAT 1070 combined, with 500 or higher on math and/or verbal, OR ACT 23 composite, with 19 or higher on math and/or English, OR THEA Reading 230, Mathematics 230, Writing 220, OR 1

3 Cost and Scholarship Information for School Year During the current year, the cost to take one 3-credit hour class at NTCC for an out-of-district student was approximately $276. While enrolled in Hughes Springs High School, NTCC will waive the cost difference between in-district and out-of-district tuition for Hughes Springs High School students resulting in a cost of $207 per 3-hour credit hour class. In addition to these charges, students must purchase textbooks and any supplies required for their classes. Northeast Texas Community College provides need-based institutional scholarships for high school students according to the following guidelines: Students must be approved for admission to NTCC before applying for the scholarship. Students receiving this scholarship must enroll in a minimum of three credit hours. Scholarship awards can be used for tuition, fees, and book charges up to a maximum of $250 for one course and $500 for two courses. Students applying for this scholarship for 2008 summer courses must provide a copy of their legal guardian s 2007 Federal Income Tax return or document untaxed income. Students applying for this scholarship for 2008 fall courses must provide a copy of their legal guardian s 2008 Federal Income Tax return or document untaxed income. To qualify, you must meet the family income levels listed below. If your family income is greater than that listed below, you will not be eligible for the scholarship. Number in Household Family Income 2 $ 28,875 3 $ 33,075 4 $ 37,275 5 $ 41,275 6 $ 45,675 7 $ 49,875 8 $ 54,075 9 $ 58,275 Applications are available at the main campus, the Naples-Omaha Center or online at Select the Financial Aid & Scholarships link on the left side of the home page. Then select Financial Aid Forms from the list on the right side of the page. In the Summer 2009 School Year section or the School Year section, select NTCC Financial Aid Concurrent HS/NTCC Students. For additional information please contact the NTCC Financial Aid Office at Hughes Springs ISD s Dual/Concurrent Credit Scholarship Fund provides need-based scholarships for students who are not eligible to receive NTCC s institutional scholarship. Students must be approved for admission to NTCC before applying for the scholarship. Application is available in the Counselor s Office. What Parents Need to Know Grades - NTCC does not mail grades. Grades are available through CampusConnect on the college website: Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act this law, commonly referred to as FERPA, prohibits colleges from providing information (other than directory information) to anyone other than the student. What this means to parents is that the college cannot give you information about your student s grades or attendance. The college also is prohibited from allowing you to enroll your student in classes or discuss their financial accounts without a note authorizing such from that student. NTCC sees each student who enrolls here as an 3
4 adult, and does not differentiate between concurrently enrolled high school students and other students. Special Accommodations Federal Law that addresses students with disabilities differs for students in high school and students in college. Generally, Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accommodations must be made to provide students with disabilities equal access to higher education. Students with disabilities must still pass the assessment/testing standards for the courses they take, and they must be able to perform in class just like any other student. They may be given help in the form of extra time, or note-takers, or accommodations to meet physical barriers, but the level of work in the class will be the same for college students with or without disabilities. If a student needs a special accommodation, they must bring written verification of their disability and request the accommodation six weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. Please note: accommodations for high school and college courses may differ significantly. Just because a student received a special accommodation in high school does not necessarily mean he/she will be given the same accommodation in college. Location of Classes Students may take dual credit or concurrent courses at the main campus in Mt. Pleasant or at any of the outreach centers where credit courses are offered. The NTCC Naples-Omaha Center and Hughes Springs High School are working closely together to offer as many dual credit opportunities as possible in Naples so that students do not have to travel to other sites. During an academic year, many of the approved dual credit courses will be offered in Naples.
