1 HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE NORTHWEST AND STRAKE JESUIT COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL DUAL CREDIT PROGRAM ONLY FOR STUDENTS REGISTERED FOR AP CALCULUS BC AND/OR AP CHEMISTRY FALL

2 Mary Alice Wills, HCC-Northwest or Returning students st start at page 35 DUAL CREDIT PROGRAM Houston Community College-Northwest & Strake Jesuit Preparatory School Applying for Admission to HCC Welcome to the Dual Credit Program. Taking Dual Credit classes enables a student to earn high school credit toward graduation and college credit toward an associate or bachelor s degree simultaneously. It eases the transition from high school to college and enables parents to save a considerable amount of college costs. There are four steps to complete to take a Dual Credit class. They are outlined below. Student s new to Dual Credit must complete all four steps. Returning students complete Steps III and IV. STEP I Applying for Admission to HCC online at FOR NEW DUAL CREDIT STUDENTS ONLY- Applying for Admission to HCC is the first step that a student must take before he or she can enroll in a Dual Credit class. Complete this step (Step I) as soon as possible. This process will get you into the HCC database but not into a Dual Credit class. A student must be in the HCC database before other steps may be completed. Information on the following three steps is outlined below. If you need help, go to the open lab at either the Katy Campus or Spring Branch Campus (formerly Town and County Campus). 1. Go to www. hccs.edu and click on Admissions & Registration box, then under New Students click on Dual Credit. Click on submit application for admission, then click on the link: Under Who should complete this web application click New Applicant then Next and follow directions. You will need your date of birth to complete the process. You will be asked for your Social Security number to complete the process. o If you do not have a Social Security number or a valid Visa, you may still complete the online application. Leave the Social Security space blank. HCC will assign you a number. o If you do not have a Social Security Number or a valid Visa but have resided in Texas for three years as you work toward your high school graduation, please visit the HCC Admissions Office to pick up an affidavit that may qualify you for in state tuition. HINTS FOR YOU AS YOU ENROLL ONLINE-PLEASE READ TO AVOID ERRORS You are a resident of Texas if you were born in Texas or if you have lived in Texas for one full year. You will be enrolling in semester credit hours (SCH) toward an associate or bachelor degree. Select concurrent enrollment; it means the same as Dual Credit. You MUST select any one Program/Career Cluster that is of interest to you for your future career/study. IMPORTANT: Check the box for Semester Credit Hour--DO NOT check Adult High School or Continuing Education! If you were born in the U.S, IGNORE the request for a Permanent Residency Number. It does not apply to you. Be sure to enter in the correct city and county of your residency. If your parent or parents claim you on their income tax as a dependent, do not claim yourself as independent. As a minor, having a job and paying taxes does not make you economically independent. Military Service: if you have never been in the military, SKIP the entire section -- DO NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. When asked about test scores, you may say no scores and go on. IMPORTANT: Be sure to take your time completing this application; answer all required questions including the state residency questions, which are used to determine whether you are an In-District student, Out-of-District student or Out-of-State student. 2. You MUST apply for admission ONLINE in order to get into the HCC database and receive an HCC Student Identification Number. The number will be assigned to you before you complete the application process. Write it down and KEEP IT SAFE. HCC maintains student records by a student s number rather than a student s name. If you lose your number, it may be retrieved by clicking on prompt Forgot User I.D on the student site or you may receive help at the college computer lab to retrieve it using your Social Security number or assigned number. 3. Acceptance Letter. You will also be able to print an Acceptance Letter and a copy of your application. Once the online Application window is closed, you may not go back into the Application again. If you made an error and closed out the Application, you must go to an HCC campus to get the error corrected. An example of an error would be selecting Adult High School rather than Semester Credit Hour. BE sure to record your HCC number. 1

3 Step II--Meeting the State of Texas--Texas Success Initiative (TSI) FOR NEW DUAL CREDIT STUDENTS ONLY-- NOT RETURNING STUDENTS Step II-. Students must be classified as juniors or seniors, meet their high school requirements for taking Dual Credit classes, and meet both the State of Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements and HCC s course and placement requirements. State law (TSI) requires that students must meet the TSI requirements in order to take college-level classes no matter what public college/university a student attends in Texas. A high school transcript showing official ACT or SAT or TAKS scores or a TAKS profile from your school, may be used to document your eligibility to take college-level classes. Original SAT or SAT scores may also be used. If your scores are less than those required, you may still qualify for Dual Credit classes through the COMPASS Test or another state test such as THEA. Academic Dual Credit classes are college-level transfer classes. IMPORTANT: If you plan to or think you might be taking a Dual Credit class in the fall, please inform Mr. Roman, before you leave for the summer. HCC does not need your high school grades, just your ACT, SAT or COMPASS scores. YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR DUAL CREDIT CLASSES THROUGH A (Exemption) OR B (Compass Test): A. Qualifying through an exemption from State testing by meeting or exceeding specified scores on the following tests: ACT---19 verbal, 19 math, composite 23 SAT math, 500 critical reading, composite score 1070 no writing requirement The above SAT scores and ACT scores will qualify a student for College Chemistry. ***Calculus--IMPORTANT FOR CALCULUS STUDENTS: Students cannot place into anything higher than College Algebra with SAT or ACT scores, even if the scores are perfect. Students planning to take Calculus I (Math 2413) MUST take the math section of the COMPASS Test in order to test out of the prerequisites for Calculus. The prerequisites are college Plane Trigonometry (Math 1316) and Precalculus Math To see a sample of the Compass Test go to: The math section of the Compass Test takes about an hour and students may use a fourfunction calculator. If you have questions, call or Mary Alice Wills at or maryalice.wills@hccs.edu. TAKS--Although most Strake Jesuit students do not take TAKS, students may use TAKS scores. If a student plans to take Chemistry, a student must score a minimum of 2200 on the English/Language Arts section of the test and have an essay score of 3 or better. In addition, a chemistry student must have a 2200 on the math section of the TAKS. TAKS scores will not qualify a student for Calculus. THEA--If a student took the THEA Test, the original scores must be brought to an HCC Counselor at the Spring Branch Campus (Town and Country Campus ) or the Katy Campus. B. Qualifying through the COMPASS Test To see sample tests go to Students must see an HCC Counselor who will authorize the students to take the COMPASS Test. Students will get their Compass Test results immediately after the test. Students should return to the HCC Counselor to have his scores assessed and entered into the HCC computer database. Since Dual Credit with Strake Jesuit is done through HCC-Northwest, it is best and easiest if a student gets help or takes the COMPASS at the Spring Branch Campus (Town and County) or Katy Campus. The test is free for Dual Credit students. If you have questions call Mary Alice Wills at or maryalice.wills@hccs.edu. o The test may take 3-4 hours to complete. The math section takes about an hour. Who will be required to take the Compass Test? Calculus students. (Students may use a four-function calculator). Chemistry students without test scores or with SAT, ACT or TAKS test scores lower than those listed above. Students who are informed by their high school or the college that they need to take the COMPASS Test. If a student qualifies for a Dual Credit class through COMPASS, his or her eligibility will be recorded in the HCC database enabling the student to enroll in college-level classes. If a student does not qualify, the COMPASS Test may be re-taken one more time before the semester begins. BUT, a student must wait 30 days before taking it again. o The HCC Counselors are available on a walk-in basis between 9:00 am & 7:00 pm Mon-Thur & until 1:00 on Fridays. Please go to the Spring Branch Campus (Town and Country) or the Katy Campus. o The Testing Center hours are Mon-Thur from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm and until 1:00pm on Fridays. Be sure to get there early enough to finish the test, which takes 3-4 hours; one hour for math. 2

4 STEP III Enrolling in Dual Credit Classes All students New and Returning STEP III--This step must be completed by both New & Returning Dual Credit Students. Once a student has applied for admission to HCC online (STEP I) and established his or her eligibility to take college-level classes (STEP II), the student is ready to enroll in classes (STEP III). TRANSFERABILITY OF CREDIT HOURS Public colleges and universities within the State of Texas are required, by state law, to accept most college-level courses in transfer from another State public institution as core, course of study or elective credit. Most Dual Credit students are taking core courses required for all majors. Students may verify the transferability of credit by asking a college or university if it accepts HCC college-level credit in transfer as recorded on an official HCC Transcript. Do not ask if High School Dual Credit classes will transfer. While many private and out-of-state institutions accept HCC college-level courses in transfer, students are advised to confirm that with the private or out-of-state institutions. TO ENROLL IN CLASS ONLINE--Carefully follow these directions to enroll in class online. Please note: once you have enrolled, you have to pay the Out-of-District fee or apply for a full waiver within 48 hours and in person at an HCC Campus.
