High School Student Orientation Updated 06/24/2013

Dual Enrollment, or the Postsecondary Options Act, gives high school students the opportunity to enroll in college courses while attending high school. When all criteria identified by the state are met, the student s college tuition and applicable fees may be paid by the school district.

Lowers the overall cost of college by hundreds or thousands of dollars! Prepares students for college-level courses. Gives students a head start on their certificates or degrees. Expands the student s high school experience.

All students will be notified of eligibility by March 1 each year. Eligible students shall receive a letter, signed by the high school principal, indicating eligibility.

Any student for whom the district feels it would be an appropriate option. Eligible students in grades 9-12 may dual enroll in up to 10 classes during their high school career. 9 th grade 2 courses 10 th grade 2 courses 11 th grade 2 courses 12 th grade 4 courses *This course limit can be waived if there is an existing agreement between the high school and the college.

Eligible students are those who are enrolled in at least one high school course and who have taken the MME in all subject areas (Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and Social Studies). If the student has not achieved endorsements in all areas, he/she is eligible to take courses limited only to the areas in which the student has received endorsements. Students are eligible to take courses within subjects for which there are no endorsements, such as philosophy, computer science, foreign language, and/or courses not offered by the district as long as the students have taken all parts of the MME.

PSAT Scores: Reading (42), Writing (41), Math (44). PLAN Scores: Math (19), Reading (17), Science (21), English (15). ACT Scores: Math (22), Reading (21), Science (24), English (18). MME Scores: Reading (1108), Writing (1100), Math (1116), Science (1126), and Social Studies (1129).

GOCC allows students to use PLAN, ACT, SAT, or Accuplacer scores to meet class prerequisites. The prerequisite scores may differ from the dual enrollment qualifying scores. EXAMPLE: To take Psychology, students need to score a 21 or higher on PLAN English, OR a 19 or higher on ACT English, OR a 6 or above on the Accuplacer Writing test. A list of prerequisites and qualifying scores can be found in a Glen Oaks class schedule or catalog or can be found online at Classes with no prerequisites do not require a score on Accuplacer, PLAN, or ACT. Students will only need to meet the dual enrollment qualifications for those courses.

1. Visit with your high school guidance counselor to determine eligibility. 2. Take the Accuplacer Placement Test and/or submit ACT and PLAN scores. Students must test out of basic or developmental levels of Reading, Writing, and Math. The Accuplacer can be waived if PLAN and/or ACT scores meet college-readiness requirements. 3. Complete the EARLY COLLEGE GUEST/DUAL ENROLLMENT APPLICATION available in the high school guidance office, the Glen Oaks Student Services Office, or at (Students under age 18 must have the application signed by a parent or guardian.)

4. Students are required to complete this Dual Enrollment Orientation prior to registering for courses. 5. The EARLY COLLEGE APPLICATION must be signed by the high school principal to indicate approval of classes and payment. 6. Application with all signatures must be sent to the Glen Oaks Admissions Office. 7. A schedule will be mailed to the student to confirm registration. Please check the schedule for any discrepancies and notify the guidance office or the Glen Oaks Admissions Office immediately if your courses or section numbers are incorrect. You can also access your class schedule through your GO-Zone account.

8. Along with the schedule, students receive a letter from the Admissions Office and information on accessing your student portal account. Please read all information carefully and activate your Go-Zone and accounts! 9. Contact your high school principal or guidance counselor to determine your school s procedure for purchasing textbooks. High schools may pay for a portion, or all, of your textbooks. 10. The high school will be billed for the tuition and applicable fees. 11. Attend class, complete the work, and enjoy the college experience!

The Glen Oaks Testing and Tutoring Center will provide testing at each county high school one time each spring. If you do not meet the requirements based upon that testing session, it is YOUR responsibility to come to Glen Oaks to retake the test. The test is free for students. Students must wait at least 24 hours before retaking any portion of the Accuplacer. Students are only allowed to retake the test one time per semester. If you retake the Accuplacer test, please notify your guidance office and the Glen Oaks Admissions Office. Practice tests and helpful study links are available on the Tutoring and Tester Center page of the Glen Oaks website, Take the test seriously! Placement into classes depends on it.

Students are required to complete an additional orientation for online classes. Orientations are offered on campus or online the week prior to classes starting. Letters and s with instructions and orientation dates/times will be sent to students 1-2 weeks before classes start. If students register late, contact the Distance Learning Center for orientation information at Students take the online orientation by logging in to the Angel networks. A link to the orientation will be on the student s Angel page. The username is the student s first initial, last name, and last three digits of his/her student ID number. The password is exactly the same. Student ID numbers are located on the schedule that is mailed to students with all dual enrollment paperwork. If students have to come to campus to take a test or use a computer, they must show a photo ID.

Students may be placed on a wait list if the class in which they intend to register is filled. You will be notified of seat availability through your Glen Oaks student account. You will have until 11:59 p.m. the following day to add the class via you GO-Zone account, or the spot will be offered to the next student on the list. You may also complete a Dual Enrollment Change of Schedule form in your high school guidance office. If you are placed on a waitlist when you register, check your every day! Log-in instructions for the GO-Zone and your account are mailed to you after you register for classes.

All changes must go through your high school guidance office. If you receive an notifying you of a spot in a class, you may add the class at that time through your GO-Zone account or complete a Dual Enrollment Change of Schedule form. You must notify your guidance office that you plan to alter your schedule. If, for some reason, your new class interferes with another course, you will need to add or drop classes so times no longer conflict. DO NOT ADD ANY NEW CLASSES ONLY ADD CLASSES THAT HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY YOUR HIGH SCHOOL!

All Glen Oaks applicants are assigned a GO-Zone account (student web portal). If you encounter problems when setting up your student account in the portal, please contact the switchboard at Any issues regarding your GO-Zone account should be directed to Registration at

The Admissions Office will complete your initial registration process (i.e. the classes listed on your dual enrollment application). Any changes after initial registration will be made by the student via the GO-Zone or by completing a Change of Schedule form. The Change of Schedule form must be signed by the student and principal and sent to the Glen Oaks Admissions Office. If you are dropping all of your classes (completely withdrawing), you must complete a Change of Schedule form in your guidance office.

Dual enrollment courses are recorded on an official Glen Oaks transcript. If you plan to attend or transfer to another college, you are strongly encouraged to contact that college to see how college credits obtained in high school will transfer to that institution. Transfer of credits varies by institution. Transfer equivalency is available through the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO) website at or through the Michigan Transfer Network at Students must earn a 2.0 (C) or higher for credits to transfer. To transfer credits to another university, you will need to fill out a Glen Oaks TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORM found on our website, Please fax or mail this form with your signature to the Glen Oaks Registration Office.

According to federal Financial Aid regulations, students must meet the following requirements to be eligible for financial aid: Complete 67% of registered classes. Obtain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better. Students who have not met these requirements may be placed on financial aid warning during their first semester at Glen Oaks after high school graduation. If you have questions about these regulations, please contact the Financial Aid Office at

By law, college faculty and representatives cannot release information to parents on students grades, attendance, or progress in class (even if the student is under the age of 18). Students sign a waiver on the Dual Enrollment application to allow the college to share records and academic progress with the high schools; however, faculty are not required to disclose this information. Instructors will share academic progress with the enrolled student. Parents: Any questions on students academic progress should be directed to the high school guidance office. The high school counselor will contact the instructor or the Admissions Office with any requests.

Your grades in Dual Enrollment (DE) classes will be recorded on an official transcript. The grades you receive become a permanent part of your college transcript. Talk to your instructors about your options if you are struggling in a class. Pay attention to drop/add and withdrawal dates listed on the Glen Oaks calendar as this affects your transcript and the school s bill. Notify your guidance counselor immediately if you plan to drop, add, or withdraw from a class. Then, make the necessary changes via the GO-Zone or by completing a Change of Schedule form.

Students taking classes on the GOCC campus will follow the Glen Oaks calendar, including break days, vacations, and snow days, etc. The high school s vacation days may not match the college s calendar. (Example: Students are expected to attend college classes even if the high school is on Spring Break.) Students taking classes at their high school will follow the high school s calendar. The law states that schools may require students to pay for classes if the student fails or withdraws from classes after the refund deadline. You will be treated as a college student and follow the college s rules and regulations. You can sign up for GOCC text alerts at to be notified by text message of class cancellations or college closures.
