Schenker takes over contract logistics for Hilti in Poland The logistics service provider DB Schenker has set up a new distribution center with ca. 10,000 warehouse units. As the contract logistics provider, the Polish subsidiary Schenker sp.z.o.o. took over the warehousing including different value-added services for Hilti, the leading manufacturer of fasteners and highly developed power tools for the construction industry. From Wroclaw, the goods are delivered to customers throughout Poland, where Hilti has been present since For the management and control of the warehouse, WMS S was implemented in a multi-lingual version (English and Polish). Source: Hilti starts pedaling for ZEG The Zweirad-Einkaufs-Genossenschaft eg (ZEG) is extending its present logistics center and has entrusted with the replacement of the current logistics software solution with WMS. Here, MFS (Material Flow System) will control the materials handling technology. These systems fully cover the planned processes and are well suited for smoothly integrating the future volume growth. Source: Fotolia optico Around the modern bike high bay warehouse, where about bicycles are stored, the outdoor storage space is now going to be replaced by a new manual storage warehouse together with a new automated double-deep high bay warehouse. With a view to improving the supply of replenishments of small parts shipping, the small parts warehouse will be extended and the materials handling technology upgraded in order to connect the new storage areas to the already existing ones. ALBA Supply Chain Management relies on complete SAP solution ALBA Supply Chain Management GmbH (ASCM), a subsidiary of the environmental services provider and raw materials supplier ALBA Group, has entrusted with the introduction of an extensive Transport Management System based on SAP, which is supposed to control the ordering, processing and accounting of transports for the ALBA Group`s subsidiary and third parties. Within the ALBA Group, ASCM is the core provider in terms of control of logistics and materials flows to the customers (outbound logistics). With the outbound logistics concept, ASCM includes transregional road transportation (municipal roads, motorways), inland water and rail transport as well as sea container export from Germany and other European countries to Asia. 6 When the Cloud is so close, you could almost touch it why not seize it and optimize logistics processes with cloud solutions? secure, quick, easy and from everywhere While some talk about the risks, many others cannot run anymore without the cloud. In private life in the era of social media and online services, it is nothing extraordinary anymore that data are no longer stored on your personal computer, but are deposited, shared and accessible on platforms. Many industrial sectors have identified its advantages and use cloud computing to carry out their activities. Logistics also knows how to implement this with the aim of optimizing its processes and, not only through isolated applications of data deriving from the cloud, but also with whole software solutions. //// Management of complex logistics networks Wilfried Pfuhl, Member of the Board, AG For a long time, there were disagreements in logistics about the cloud is it only a buzzword or a very promising concept to save costs, react flexibly to changes without committing binding investments? Opposite these advantages, there were concerns about security as well as doubts if cloud solutions could actually guarantee performance and availability like they promised. Because especially in logistics where reaction times are becoming shorter and shorter, delivery networks more and more extensive and data availability extremely important, one of the priorities is to avoid any risk concerning the shifting of services, applications and storage capacity in the cloud. //// Cloud yes or no Today, the operational reality of logistics provides various answers to the question: cloud yes or no? Transport logistics has long been accessing specific applications of the cloud. Whether over the link with customs authorities, tracking & tracing or transport exchanges services can be accessed to meet the concrete and temporary information and communication requirements. In addition, warehouse logistics can benefit from cloud services, too. In this way, logistics managers can access their processes at any time and control their warehouse from home, too. Logistics service providers can quickly represent new business with a warehouse management software from the cloud and flexibly react to delivery fluctuations. The application options in logistics are versatile: those who think that cloud solutions are only profitable for small warehouses and that the big ones should totally rely on dedicated systems are mistaken. The various facets of cloud computing offers the suitable solution for all situations. According to need, software, infrastructure or platform can be referred to as a service. //// Convincing advantages The benefits are clear: the customer selects an application and can start using it within an extremely short time without any expensive hardware installation and high investments, a text book example of software as a service. Standard and modular software solutions, especially the way they are developed today, are perfectly suitable for cloud computing. This not only applies to single applications, but also to classical logistics software solutions. With WMS S, offers a complete solution for warehouse management from the cloud. This standard solution includes all functions that are necessary for an ideal warehouse control, from good receiving, picking and staging to goods issue. It can be accessed in the cloud with a very short time to market and does not require high investments from the user. With its modular structure, WMS S fulfills all the requirements of a cloud solution that can be easily and quickly integrated. In addition, depending on the needs, other complementary functions can be booked for the desired time. Further, the security of highly sensitive data in the cloud and the connections to the cloud itself are guaranteed today. The plan extends all the way down to single employees since / 6 /
the local periphery can now be integrated MDTs, label printers or RF devices can be connected to the software from the cloud. //// Shopping in the Logistics Mall An example that extends this possibility is the Logistics Mall, launched by the Fraunhofer Institut für Materialfluss und Logistik IML together with the Fraunhofer Institut für Software und Systemtechnik ISST and run by the Logata GmbH. Like in a supermarket, you can build up your complete solution here by combining single components. In this way, for example, the warehouse management can be combined with the link to customs authorities of another provider and supplemented with a shipping system of a third provider. In this manner, the logistics software packages and processes are easily tailored according to the individual customer. These possibilities are joined by information services, which are made available on the cloud. In this way, the user has access to goods details, for example dangerous goods data, electronic family trees of pharmaceutical products (e-pedigree) or further information regarding the origin of a single piece of goods. Wherever the product is located and at any time, it can always be tracked: you can, for example, see from where it comes, how long and where it has been stored or its expiration date. This serves not only as a quality warranty, but also as protection against counterfeiting or illegal reimports, especially in highly sensitive areas. demands are also met. The use of a cloud solution is particularly suitable for enterprises with flexible business models, seasonal activity and the need to temporarily get further capacities. The software scalability enables you to quickly manage a strong productivity or volume growth. Within a very short time, the simple call up of an application and the easy installation are profitable for logistics providers, who want to integrate their new business quickly. These can in turn make available the services on the cloud for their customers. Tracking & tracing functions represent the best example. //// Safe simple economical - easy Thanks not only to the individual standardized, modularized and scalable solutions or applications, is the ideal provider of logistics software solutions from the cloud, but also the know-how and experience of consultants and developers contribute to enrich this offer. They are expert on cloud computing, web based applications, as well as remote maintenance and service the users are quickly trained with courses or webinars when they access an application from the cloud. is totally responsible for the administration in this context, cloud computing becomes a safe, simple, economical and easy method to optimize its logistics processes. //// Warehouse management always and everywhere Solutions like WMS Everywhere offered by make single features of the warehouse management solution WMS available everywhere and anytime. In this way, it always possible to access the current data from the warehouse control and the logistics manager is able to get an extensive overview on the current events or process conditions no matter where he is at that moment; he always stays informed up to the minute. also offers as well logistics software solutions based on SAP. Thanks to the platform structure of the SAP solutions (Supply Chain Execution Platform), these can be highly integrated and easily accessed from the cloud. Accessing single applications, complete software solutions or special data from the cloud can bring various advantages to the companies. In addition to the visible benefits like low costs and a short integration time, additional management / 7 /
Trilux: Modern Warehouse Management System for a new light uses SAP EWM to optimize the logistics processes in two Trilux warehouses TRILUX GmbH & Co. KG, provider of lamps and lighting solutions, runs a central distribution center (European Distribution Center, EDC) at the Arnsberg site as a delivery warehouse acting as the TRILUX central logistics hub. A warehouse for production supplies with a connected high bay warehouse is located here as well. In 2012, AG introduced SAP EWM in two projects in both warehouses. The team faced the challenge of considering both of the projects individually, with their specific demands, and developing them simultaneously, in order to guarantee a completely functioning logistics network for TRILUX in the shortest possible time. //// The HBW fit for the future The high bay warehouse (HBW) was already built in Here, Euro pallets only are stored in five aisles on single deep spaces and moved by a stacker crane per aisle. In addition, there are six picking stations where pallets are order picked from. While from an architecture and technical point of view the warehouse met the TRILUX requirements after a retrofit, the IT control in 2011 appeared out of date. The warehouse control unit was so obsolete that the integration in the TRILUX network became more and more uncertain. Moreover, the WMS application was not portable anymore and the support was still only possible by one person a red alert for the TRILUX logistics. In order to guarantee a highly integrated, uniform and high performing logistics control, TRILUX decided to switch to SAP EWM for the HBW and EDC. completed this change-over and also provided the necessary mobile data terminals (MDT). //// The EDC: small parts - customer tailored - on time Numerous challenges that were faced in many areas of the warehouse logistics had also emerged for the EDC. This is the reason why today s processes must be oriented towards an increasingly detailed sending structure and to different customer needs regarding packing and labeling of goods kit to order processes must be illustrated as well. Concerning Source: TRILUX GmbH & Co. KG / 8 /
the compliance to deadlines, a very high level has already been reached that cannot be put at risk by any disturbance variables. Inside the warehouse, the different companies of the TRILUX group must be represented through separate plants. In short: warehouse performance and efficiency must be improved. The advantages deriving from SAP EWM are impressive: the high performance of the warehouse management and material flow control, together with the continual development of the standard software enable a direct implementation of the new TRILUX requirements at any time. Moreover, the system was smoothly integrated in the already existing SAP landscape. The lighting solutions of TRILUX are designed for the most various purposes and areas. Logistics must also meet the highest quality standards for the different customer demands. Already at the beginning of June 2012, the HBW including the goods receiving checking areas and the shelf storage areas for the production supply could be run with SAP EWM. In this way, TRILUX was given a complete inventory and movement transparency through a uniform logistics platform as well as a stable and comprehensive connection of the conveyor technology with SAP EWM MFS. While in the past single requirements were introduced manually in the HBW, everything is now run automatically through the delivery processing with SAP EWM. Thanks to S/SIM, the simulation tool from AG, the project was able to be further accelerated. Telegrams from the conveyor technology could be simulated and processes tested with support through visualization beforehand. //// From HBW to EDC Finished goods are delivered with an EDC shuttle from the assembly plant in Arnsberg to the EDC. Here, they are checked, consolidated, stored and later consolidated for orders and then packed according to customer demands. Every day, a total of 24 shuttle trucks from HBW and production deliver goods that are moved and stored on a hall area of 15,500 m². In addition, they are joined on a daily basis by eight trucks coming from external suppliers. In total, that makes ca. 700 load carriers passing through the goods receiving every day. These receipts are stored on 23,750 pallet locations, 400 running meters long cantilever racks and in up to 10,000 small parts storage locations. At the same time, 450 pallets and 200 packages leave the EDC from the goods issue every day. There are special demands here to meet according to the different recipient groups. TRILUX subsidiaries have to be supplied domestically and internationally as well as the supplying of wholesaler warehouses and the processing of project related deliveries to construction sites. In addition, export goods are packed in containers and single deliveries are carried out. Since in the past special customer demands were becoming more and more important, it has become Source: TRILUX GmbH & Co. KG / 9 /
inevitable for TRILUX to replace the warehouse control in the EDC. And in this context, many factors suggested the introduction of SAP EWM. On the one hand, TRILUX wanted to guarantee the process control for a quick and flexible process design and, on the other hand, it wanted to take advantage of the innovations of the SAP EWM product development. Furthermore, SAP EWM also supports the strategic further development of TRILUX Logistics to the TRILUX group service provider. It means that the insourcing of logistics processes of TRILUX subsidiaries will be possible thanks to the multi-company ability of SAP EWM. //// Optimizing the waves The wave management is used in order to meet the different customer demands and delivery units in the goods issue on time and optimizing the resources. Transports are already planned in SAP ERP. SAP EWM uses wave templates with the latest possible starting time. Nevertheless, this can only occur once all process times are recorded. The system can also integrate special waves in the planning, for example for long goods, or quickly adapt the waves. Moreover, TRILUX uses the SAP EWM resource management for the fork lift control in an extensive way. need to be met. The SAP EWM determination logic is also used for staging areas. A packing dialog, which was extended as standard, is used in order to support the packer. //// Special Features Some special functions of the application make the software solution for TRILUX an even more fit. One example is that TRILUX is always able to track its own products even without a batch assignment since the connection from the goods receiving advices through to the goods issue is documented. In the process, the information maintenance is guaranteed by an individual text recording of the handling units. By switching to SAP EWM, all project goals could be reached in the EDC, too. On the one hand, this provides TRILUX with a process design meeting the challenges. On the other hand, SAP EWM offers a high flexibility in processing as well as a complete inventory and movement transparency. Indeed, it is optimally integrated in the current SAP landscape at TRILUX and provides a uniform logistics platform together with the HBW for the production supply. In packaging, the various customer demands flow finally into different packaging codes. For example, the arrangement of products on pallets depends on whether they are stock goods or project goods of a wholesaler or whether particular requirements of construction site logistics / 10 / Source: TRILUX GmbH & Co. KG
WITHIN BUDGET AND TIME FRAMES Interview with Stefan Hecking, Head of TRILUX Logistics : According to you, what were the most important challenges in both of the two SAP EWM projects? Stefan Hecking: On the one hand, we had to take a quick action. The more and more complex customer demands could hardly be met by the old warehouse control. Logistics looked like it had reached its limit. The first ambitious goal was to implement the plans on time. Nevertheless, we had to remain within the fixed budget framework. The projects were supposed to be carried out not only in a quick way, but also at a reasonable price. : In such a system changeover, not only the solution plays an important role, but also the consulting and implementation partner. What is it that you like about? Stefan Hecking: We were looking for a partner having a certain experience in the implementation of the extremely complex SAP EWM system. And since already had numerous reference projects in this field, it was one of the big favorites. Besides, we attach a great importance to a partnership working on a project. We expected competent collaborators that could constantly be available during the project, so that we could quickly react to any complications. In the long run, the implementation partner should also provide its TRILUX project team with the necessary knowledge transfer. Finally, we would like to be able to act autonomously. : So what is your conclusion? Stefan Hecking: We are very happy about the course of the project. The cooperation between the project teams, each one composed of 50% and 50% TRILUX collaborators, went smoothly. Thanks to the SAP EWM introduced by, TRILUX has obtained uniform and efficient logistics processes, from SAP ERP system through to the warehouse management. In the future, further automated conveyor technology can be connected to the SAP EWM standard as well. By doing so, a higher transparency in the development of all logistics processes is guaranteed. / 11 /
HANSE SERVICE: MODULAR LOGISTICS SOFTWARE Hanse Service monitors all warehouse processes via the highly modularized standard software WMS S Textile, food and technology logistics these three logistics industries set special requirements for the warehouse management and control. Hanse Service Internationale Fachspedition manages the logistics processes of these different industries using the warehouse management system WMS S. Whether serial number management or best before data, the system takes into account all the specific features of the goods that are to be moved. In this way, it guarantees planning security for Hanse Service and its customers. Hanse Service Internationale Fachspedition has been a reliable logistics provider for transport and warehouse logistics since Launched as a professional provider for the processing of imports and textile logistics, its service portfolio has been extended massively until today. The Hamburg based logistics company has more than 12,000 m² of storage area spread out over three logistics sites in south Hamburg. Besides the main business of textile logistics, Hanse Service also focuses its attention today on pharmaceutical and food logistics as well as technology logistics; whereby at the moment, storage and transport of solar panels is in the foreground. And as expected, there are also many logistics challenges that need to be faced with a software solution. //// Elogisticspartner Under its registered trade mark Elogisticspartner, Hanse Service imports about one million solar modules in 1,200 containers every year. These are stored in Hamburg and assembled to be delivered. Deliveries to European customers are processed by the freight forwarder as well. Therefore, the software solution includes a serial number management which permits to trace back, at any time, by whom and to which customer every single solar panel has been delivered. In this way, all data related to the single piece are always retrievable. //// Food and Pharmaceuticals The second industry, whose logistics processes are done by Hanse Service, is the food industry, whereby first steps have already been taken towards pharmaceutical logistics. Apart from the fact that in packaging, piece quantity / 12 /
Source: Fotolia Michael Kempf and size, totally different criteria must be considered than with respect to the ones regarding solar panels. Here, you constantly need to pay attention to the best before date (BBD). In addition, production and delivery date, temperature, quality and supplier`s indicator belong to the data that need to be taken into account in each picking and delivering phase. In this industry, a functioning batch tracing is mandatory, also bearing in mind that Hanse Service is licensed for the storage of organic products. //// Assortment changes - repacking Concerning the storage of apparel items, there are again other criteria that are prioritized. On the one hand, Hanse Service has arranged here different storage areas for cartonized, hanging and flat goods. On the other hand, assortments must be separated and cartons repacked for production orders. This must be considered not only in the processing and packaging of goods, but also in the Warehouse Management System. Besides, assortments are put together in different ways, sometimes according to size, but often also by colors. Therefore, the system must collect these data, too, in order to avoid any information loss. ///// A solution for everything For each one of these business Source: Hanse Service Internationale Fachspedition Every year Hanse Service imports about one million solar modules in 1,200 containers. In Hamburg, these are first stored and then combined into new deliveries. / 13 /
Source: Hanse Service Internationale Fachspedition industries of Hanse Service Internationale Fachspedition, it is possible to manage a separate warehouse with all the specific processes concerning goods receiving, goods issue and picking. On the contrary, at Hanse Service, everything is managed under one roof and above all under one and the same software solution. The standard software WMS S is designed in a way that permits managing each of these specific processes, as well as each peculiarity in the data management. On the one hand, it contains the basic functions of a warehouse management software, from goods receiving, picking and staging to goods issue. Location management plays an essential role for Hanse Service due to the chaotic warehouse location management approach. On the other hand, WMS S is extendable with further functions thanks to its highly modularized structure. //// Interfaces to customer systems In addition to the functions mentioned at the beginning, which are indispensable for Hanse Service given its versatile customer structure, WMS S provides goods receiving and goods issue interfaces to customer systems, i. e. to well-known ERP systems or web shops. Furthermore, data can be exchanged in a browser environment between connected and authorized parties via the elog module, which is also integrated. Inventory information as well as goods notifications are communicated through this portal. Hanse Service customers can both use and offer tracking & tracing services via this platform. Furthermore, the MFCS module has been integrated as a transport control system to monitor the conveying vehicles and logistics technology. In this way, transports are planned and optimized according to the situation. In order to perform single transports, these are divided into several steps and are carried out, monitored and reported by means of the fork lift control. On this basis, Hanse Service processes 100,000 packages and 20,000 pallets every year via freight forwarding shipping. In 2011, this yielded a turnover of 10 million for the Hamburg based logistics provider. Hanse Service decided to adopt the flexible Warehouse Management System WMS S in order to be ready for the further growth and constantly new customer demands. / 14 /
With WMS S, we are absolutely ready for new business and further expansion of our company. Interview with Thorsten Eckel, Director of Hanse Service Internationale Fachspedition : Mr. Eckel, why did Hanse Service choose the Warehouse Management System WMS S? Thorsten Eckel: In this decision, the modular design and high configurability of the solution played an essential role. We could, therefore, combine the modules that are important for us following the modular approach and all this based on our and our customer`s needs. : In such a system change, not only the solution plays a decisive role, but also the consulting and implementation partner. What is that you like about? Thorsten Eckel: Realizing the project with was relatively easy. Even during the implementation phase, we were able to change single processes without any big problem. Thanks to the joint requirements analysis, workshops and consultation meetings, the members of the project team had the opportunity to better get to know each other, which simplified our partnership. If changes were requested, we knew right from the start whom to turn to in order to have them quickly accepted and implemented. : What is now the way forward for Hanse Service? With WMS S, your system can now handle further volume growth and ensures a certain flexibility with new businesses. Are there any plans regarding this? Thorsten Eckel: At the moment, we are more focused on technology logistics. We already deliver and store solar panels, but in the future, we are also going to handle all the logistics processes surrounding renewable energies. Another main focus is we want to expand in the pharmaceutical and organic food Soruce: Hanse Service Internationale Fachspedition industries. With regard to this, we need to pay attention to a number of special features in storing, transport and traceability. With WMS S, we are prepared not only for this, but also for new businesses. / 15 /
