ENJOY A DEGREE OF DISTINCTION The Executive MBA represents the highest achievement in business education. It focuses on developing a breadth of knowledge across every discipline of business and management, as well as the ability to build and participate in networks and influence strategy at all levels of your company. The Executive MBA also prides itself on developing principles of social responsibility, corporate ethics and diversity. The Executive MBA is a flexible two year, highly interactive course, which combines current enterprise issues, case studies and knowledge from emerging disciplines based around a cohort model. The Executive MBA offers you a truly global perspective. 13

ACADEMIC PROFILES Academic Profile Associate Professor Benjamin Hunt Director, Executive MBA As Director of the Executive MBA, I have seen students become proficient in the technical skills required of contemporary leaders in business. Further to this, our students are exposed to a range of complex thinking and problem solving in ways that challenge their preconceived notions about how business is done. I have observed students apply theories and concepts to engage with industry specialists, and in doing so, they have begun to understand more deeply the intricacies of business and the way various specialists approach complex industry problems. Our students create their own community through the cohort model. They build strength from each other and, as the Director of the program, the satisfaction I gain in seeing our students flourish individually and collectively is immensely rewarding. Academic Profile Dr Antoine Hermens Antoine has extensive commercial experience and advises a number of national and international clients on Strategy and Alliance Management. Our students and alumni are an elite group of talented individuals and are representative of current and future business leaders. Our innovative program draws on the diverse body of knowledge, experience and skill sets of lecturers, practitioners and students, facilitating the application and cocreation of leading edge knowledge. The strong network between students, alumni and executives from industry further heightens the value of the UTS Executive MBA long after students graduate. As a senior academic in Strategic Management and Global Strategic Management, I am proud to be associated with the UTS Executive MBA program. 14

AN UNRIVALLED, GLOBAL PEER NETWORK Our students come from a broad spectrum of industries and cultural backgrounds, creating an experience enriched with practical, international perspectives. Classes are only attended by Executive MBA students. This cohort model facilitates invaluable peer-to-peer networking with other high trajectory executives, creating a lifelong network of the finest calibre. 15

STUDENT PROFILES Emma Mcleod Founder and Director Stillbirth Foundation Australia Medal (OAM) of The Order of Australia for her service to community health through the Stillborn Foundation Australia The sharing of ideas, the support of others in the course and the learnings from each of our respective workplaces has been invaluable. The collective years of business experience in each lecture room far outweighs what would otherwise be simple academic teaching. To travel through a course in a cohort model with the same people, has been excellent these amazing people will remain friends, business advisers and wise confidantes for many years to come. Raymond Griffin CFP Managing Director, Griffin Financial Services Pty Ltd An intensely focused two years of postgraduate study was always going to be a challenge but the design of the UTS Executive MBA makes it very manageable and far more enjoyable than traditional study modes. The cohort model of learning brings together people from disparate business backgrounds making for a multifaceted learning process. While naturally the academic course content is central, studying alongside people from across the spectrum of commercial enterprises is what makes the program different and very memorable. Susanne Hawes Senior Manager, Price Waterhouse Coopers Australia I was quite deliberate in choosing postgraduate studies that were not just within the healthcare sector. For me, the prospect of studying with and learning from people in other industries was really important. I think the opportunity to grow and learn is very empowering. They re life choices you make. 16

Dr Julian Edwards CEO, Object Consulting For me it was all about the cohort model. I was looking to do an MBA which was about getting a broader cross-disciplinary business knowledge. I wanted to connect with colleagues who I could share the difficulties and challenges of my business practice with who would say yeah, I understand. Mark Hayward Owner and Director, Operation Advantage I sensed as we were going through the degree that my lecturers really understood business. They weren t solely academics. They came from a business environment or were very engaged with the business community. Ruth McGovern Centre Manager, Westfield Burwood I was specifically drawn to the UTS Executive MBA program for its unique cohort experience and the smaller, more interactive class sizes. This truly broadened my business skill and knowledge base, while the friendships formed will last a lifetime. While my motivation for enrolling was to obtain competitive advantage, the result was an enriching business networking opportunity which has taken me to where I am today. 17

HOW OUR EXECUTIVE MBA WORKS The Executive MBA seeks firstly to develop the technical knowledge and the building blocks required to successfully run a business or business unit. Nine core subjects are undertaken to gain a deep understanding of what business is, followed by three electives. As students progress through the Executive MBA program, they are taught to analyse and understand strategic issues. Executive MBA graduates possess the tools to make tactical and strategic business decisions as well as the capacity for analysing and synthesising this complex information, along with an understanding of business models that adhere to the principles of sound corporate governance and social responsibility. 26

LOCAL RESIDENTIAL BLOCKS Your first subject, Applied Leadership and Strategy, is delivered as a one week residential block. With your cohort, you will work through this challenging subject, which will combine academic and experiential learning with teamwork skills. Together you will lay the foundation for a powerful cohort learning environment, which is the backbone of the UTS Executive MBA. Your final capstone subject, Global Business Strategies, will also be delivered as a one week residential block bringing the cohort together for the culmination of the degree. INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTIAL BLOCK You have the option to participate in an international study tour, which takes place in late November/early December each year. During the one week tour, participants are exposed to a series of expert presentations and company visits supporting the subject objectives, while solving a business problem for a Sydney-based firm. Academic and industry supervisors are assigned to coach, mentor and assist participants in their engagement. Findings are delivered to the client via a presentation and a formal report. 27

CORE SUBJECTS Applied Leadership and Strategy Leadership, teamwork and global strategic thinking connect in this applied subject. Experientially grounded and using both computer-based simulations and creative problem solving, students will engage in assessing business risk, competitive conditions and future prospects as catalysts for learning. Reflective practices identifying personal strengths and development opportunities inform and extend conceptual understandings of leadership, teamwork and creative thinking. Decision-Making Tools Numbers are everything in business and no significant business decision is made without the support of numerical data. Many a career is impeded by a manager s inability to manipulate and interpret business data. This subject is designed to ensure that your career is not held back in this manner. The subject provides the skills to analyse business problems with appropriate quantitative techniques and numerical tools. Emphasis is placed on realistic business examples and the processes managers use to analyse problems. Organisational Behaviour in Practice Dealing with people can be either the most enriching or frustrating experience of our working lives. Yet have you ever wondered why people pose so many challenges, and how one can best deal with those challenges in the workplace? Organisational Behaviour in Practice will actively challenge and enhance the way you lead people in organisations by applying the most up-to-date behavioural science research to leading and managing people at work. The subject aims to equip you with and to develop the latest capabilities required for excellence in leadership practice in today s increasingly complex business environments. Accounting Information for Managers This subject will develop accounting fundamentals and their application in the management of business activity. In addition, it will integrate accounting with other aspects of managerial action including general management, finance, production, marketing and human resource decisions. Students will be introduced to the interpretation and analysis of financial statements and their practical applications. Management accounting issues including budgeting, variance analysis, cost allocations, internal performance measurement and reporting systems are explored. Students will be required to undertake a syndicate case study based on a listed public company. Managerial Economics Economics is not only relevant, it is everywhere and in everything. Every business and business manager has to continually deal with resource scarcity. Economics is the decision science whereby scarce resources are allocated in a way that produces the best possible outcome. The Theory of the Firm and other major economic themes will offer an understanding of managerial decision making. The analysis of economic forces that influence corporate strategy will provide the range of skills and expertise expected of corporate managers. 30

Managerial Marketing Managerial Marketing provides a foundation and framework for developing marketing-oriented organisations that effectively anticipate and respond to rapidly changing local, regional and global business environments. Executives will be exposed to cases and simulations requiring marketing decision-making. The challenges and consequences of these decisions, with mentorship from experienced marketing executives and moderators, will form the basis of this subject. Managerial Finance Analysis of the financial forces that influence corporate strategy will provide students with the financial expertise expected of corporate managers. An understanding of the tools and techniques used in financial decisionmaking will be developed by analysing relevant business cases in key areas such as risk and diversification, capital budgeting and cost of capital. Corporate Governance and Sustainability Corporate Governance and Sustainability is at the leading edge of postgraduate business studies and builds on the teaching and research skills of UTS Business School members who are world authorities in the area. It emphasises systems of governance as a matter of financial accountability, while incorporating sustainability and corporate responsibility concerns that are of increasing importance to business. The subject addresses areas of vital importance to senior managers such as the complexity of internal business behaviour and control, the impact of the capital market environment and how this may contribute to a sustainable enterprise. Global Business Strategies Global Business Strategies is the capstone subject in the Executive MBA degree and focuses on value innovation. The subject presents insights using leading-edge organisations and situations to demonstrate strategy in practice. This approach is designed to challenge traditional thinking about strategy. Issues addressed include: how to meet the business challenges arising from international social and environmental concerns and technical innovation; strategic options for entering and competing in foreign markets; the growing role of alliances with partners from rapidly developing economies; the importance of locating operations in the most advantageous countries and the special circumstances of competing in emerging markets. 31

ELECTIVES Select 3 subjects from the following: Organisational Analysis Brings together leading edge debates from the study of organisations, ensuring managers think critically about how theory can inform and improve their own professional practice. Innovation and Entrepreneurship Integrates new thinking around current problems in technology, marketing and business and explores progressive solutions to these problems. Strategic Human Resource Management Provides a critical and strategic appreciation of how to integrate the theory and practice of HRM into the management of a corporation s intangible assets. Operations and Value Chain Strategy Instructs how to design and manage the production and delivery of products and services in a competitive and increasingly sensitive national and global environment. Financial Analysis and Business Valuations Demonstrates through public listed companies the analysis of financial statements, providing the framework for evaluating management strategies. 32

Business Decisions and Models Demonstrates the application of business analysis techniques to solve everyday management problems. This subject identifies a range of strategies for analysing common problems experienced by a majority of companies. Marketing Strategy in Practice Students investigate a specific marketing issue faced by their employer or a firm of their choice. A highly personalised subject that brings students classroom learning back to a company. Managerial Corporate Finance Provides students with an intensive examination of corporate financial theory and policy by considering issues such as the essential nature of risk and uncertainty, capital budgeting, financial structure, cost of capital and dividend policy. International Business Consulting Gain tangible, hands-on consulting experience and be exposed to senior Australian and international business leaders. This subject offers a global business perspective that allows students to see, operate and compete beyond borders and learn to manage a technology-driven environment that goes far beyond e-business. Please note: Some electives may not be offered each semester. 33
