ABOUT THE MIM The Master of Information Management (MIM) is specifically designed for professionals seeking advanced careers in the management of information systems. Its goal is to foster development of the deep understanding and rich analytical and decision-making skills that are critical for managers whose roles span the IT/business boundary. The programme s varied subject options and learning activities are geared to build a broad base of understanding while encouraging personal development and exploration. A postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma provide optional stepping stones towards the degree. Classes are offered after normal working hours for the convenience of working students. The seminar style of instruction is chosen to suit people who are used to a business environment. Students will enjoy sharing their knowledge and work experience with others in the programme. 6 THE MIM PROGRAMME The MIM consists of courses worth at least 180 points (10 taught courses and a project). Study for the MIM comprises: Part 1: Two core courses (MMIM 501, 502). Part 2: Electives from the MIM schedule or approved courses from other Honours or Master s programmes. Part 3: A consulting-style case-study project (MMIM 590). The MIM can be completed in two to four years of part-time study or 16 months of full-time study. CORE COURSES MMIM 501 Communication and Critical Thinking in Information Management MMIM 502 Managing in the Information Age These courses ensure that all students have a thorough grounding in the technical and conceptual knowledge and skills required to be able to succeed in the MIM programme

7 ELECTIVE COURSES All MIM students must take at least eight elective courses chosen from the following, in any combination. Sustainability and Information Security, Innovation and Entrepreneurship) Electives are usually offered at least once every two years. In addition, with fast-developing subjects, special topic courses are offered. Up to three electives from other postgraduate programmes, such as the Master of Business Aadministration or the Master of Information Studies programmes, can be included to make up the total of 180 points

8 INDIVIDUAL CASE-STUDY PROJECT Each MIM participant completes a field case study in an appropriate organisation. The case-study project is a 30-point two-trimester course, involving regular seminars and consultation sessions with a supervisor. Students are encouraged to select research topics relevant to their career objectives. WORKLOAD Each course involves a workload of hours per week for the 12 weeks of the trimester. Full-time students can therefore expect a workload of hours for much of the year. Part-time students undertaking two courses per trimester can expect about hours of work a week, and this needs to be taken into account if they are in full-time employment

9 STEPPING STONES TO THE MIM The MIM is integrated with a Postgraduate Certificate in Information Management and a Diploma in Information Management, which provide stepping stones to the full MIM for those who are uncertain whether they can commit to the entire programme. Postgraduate Certificate in Information Management Two core courses (MMIM 501 and 502) and two elective courses (chosen from the table on page 7). Postgraduate Diploma in Information Management Two core courses (MMIM501 and 502) plus six elective courses (chosen from the table on page 7). Ameera Durga MIM graduate Prior to attending the MIM programme, I worked as a business analyst in South Africa and New Zealand. For me, the MIM has been a career changer, opening a world of possibilities. Through the MIM, I ve been exposed to prominent international professors and scholars, to talented colleagues, and resources that confirm Victoria as a world-class university. The programme really crystallised what matters most to me in a job: meaningful work and meaningful relationships. After working for a period as a management consultant, I am now a senior manager for EY (Ernst & Young). The MIM has been a perfect platform for developing extemporaneous communication skills and entrepreneurial exposure. It has also provided me with a more finely honed ability to see the big picture the key to success in management consulting

10 Kyle Gibson MIM graduate In technical IT roles, I felt shoeboxed. While I understood the business side of things from my background in banking and insurance, I was valued only for my technical skills and wasn t really taken seriously. On the advice of a friend, I applied for the MIM programme at Victoria Business School. Compared with other qualifications in the IT space ones more focused on the technical aspects of the job it was unique and a completely different calibre. And, from my employer s perspective, it was great value for money. I completed for the Master s part time over five years, a time frame that could have been tighter if life hadn t got in the way. Over that time, I got married, broke my leg and my wife had a baby. Fortunately, the programme was flexible enough to cater for these events. I also set up my own security consulting firm. Having my own business was something I d always aspired to, but had not previously had the courage for. The confidence I gained through my studies and my growing ability to think critically and take the blinkers off pushed me towards my decision to go out on my own. As the owner of my own business, getting buy-in from potential clients, business partners and employees is all about being taken seriously and that s something that hasn t been a problem for quite some time
