Course Code MSc Full-Time 1087 MSc Part-Time 1919 MSc Dublin Date Revised Effective from September EDUCATIONAL AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE The overall aim of the MSc in and Corporate Governance is to educate and develop non-cognate and nonexperienced students in the areas of business, management, law, public administration and corporate governance. The development of their knowledge, intellectual professional/ practical and transferable/key skills will equip participants for

2 senior appointments in industry, the public and charitable sectors. The students professional development will also be acknowledged by the award of Graduate Membership of the ICSA (Grad ICSA). Within the overall aim, the purpose of the programme is: - To prepare students for a career in management and administration through the development of transferable intellectual skills necessary for senior management. - To demonstrate a critical understanding and application of the principles of corporate governance in the organisation. - To enable an advanced study of organisations and their management. - To apply the concepts and principles of strategic management to organisations to promote good governance and accountability to stakeholders. - To develop students knowledge and understanding of the finances of the organisation with an emphasis on accounting for purpose. - To develop students understanding and skills to manage the legal environment of the organisation. - To enhance students lifelong learning skills. - To enhance the personal development of students to enable them to work with self-direction and originality to contribute to business, the public sector and society as a whole. 11. MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES The following reference points were used to inform the development of the course and its learning outcomes: The University s Vision and core strategic aims, teaching and learning strategy and policies; QAA subject benchmark statement for Master s degrees in business and management 2007; QAA draft for consultation for Master s degree characteristics 2009; 7

3 The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Accountants; Research and other advanced scholarship carried out by academic staff; National and University qualifications and credit frameworks; and Relevant European or international reference points. The MSc and Corporate Governance course provides opportunities for participants to achieve and demonstrate: 11K K1 K2 K3 K4 K5 K6 K7 K8 KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF SUBJECT. Knowledge of the functions, fundamental concepts and processes that impact upon the organisation, particularly in relation to operations management and human resource management; Knowledge and critical understanding of the legal, ethical, social, cultural and technological influences that potentially impact upon the organisation; Knowledge and application of accounting and finance and company law; Understanding and critical appreciation of the implications of corporate governance in organisations; Understanding and critical appreciation of the strategic direction of the organisation; Critical understanding of leadership and change issues impacting on the organisation; In-depth knowledge and critical appreciation of the role of governance within the public sector; Critical understanding of the nature of social science research methods and methodology and their application through the completion of a research project. Learning and Teaching Methods In addition to lectures, seminars, directed reading, case studies, electronic resources and case studies, there are distinctive features of the course. The residential activity provides a rich source of additional experience for subsequent analysis and workshops 8

4 delivered by ICSA members and others will provide valuable insight into the application of knowledge within organisations. The project will facilitate the wider understanding and application of knowledge to an organisation. Learning and Teaching Methods The intellectual qualities are developed through problem based learning resources, research based learning materials, practitioner led and student led discussions and project work. Assessment Methods Coursework, case studies, project, examinations and presentations. 11P PROFESSIONAL/PRACTICAL SKILLS The MSc provides opportunities for participants to achieve and demonstrate an ability to: 9

MSc All learning outcomes are applicable. PgD All learning outcomes are applicable. Learning and Teaching Methods There is group work and experiential learning. The process begins with the opening residential and continues with formative group work as part of seminars, projects and research activity. It continues through lectures, assignments and the project. Verbal and written feedback is provided throughout to identify and confirm good practice and offer constructive advice on how to improve further. MSc All learning outcomes are applicable. PgD All learning outcomes are applicable. Learning and Teaching Methods These skills are a well integrated aspect of the whole course. In particular however, they are established and developed through the completion of practical and applied exercises, work-based assignments and case studies that may require peer presentations. Students are given written and verbal feedback on content as well as on their transferable skills such as the quality of writing and oral presentation. Assessment Methods Individual and group assignments, presentations and the project. Time management is also demonstrated though the effective completion of the assessment workload. 11

9 12. STRUCTURE AND REQUIREMENTS FOR THE AWARD The MSc in and Corporate Governance is a one year, three semester course. There are 14 taught modules and a project (as shown in table B1.1). Part-time students may complete the course over a minimum of two years, through completion of 50% of the full-time diet of modules in each year. The course begins with a five day induction, incorporating a core skills development residential that feeds into the Organisation Behaviour and module, in addition to a one day induction including Library Skills and an introduction to Accounts. In Semester one, two modules provide the prerequisites for further study in Semester two with Financial Accounting underpinning Corporate Financial and Company Law underpinning Corporate Secretaryship. The remaining four modules provide an in-depth understanding of the corporate management environment in terms of Organisational Behaviour and, Human Resource, Strategic Operations and Quality and Business Law. Semester two comprises a more focused study of the specialist professional modules of Corporate Secretaryship, Corporate Financial, Strategy and Corporate Governance. Semester three widens the range of study to the Public Sector and provides further input to the area of leadership within the organisation along with an opportunity for students to develop more specialist skills, through a choice of optional modules. Students will have the opportunity to select two options from a range of optional modules. Four are currently offered but other modules may also be made available in the future. Students who complete the MSc and Corporate Governance course will have gained a minimum of 180 credit points. If a 15 point optional module is chosen the student may exit with over 180 credit points. Some students will choose to take the PgD as an exit route with Grad ICSA. Students who achieve the PgD will gain 120 credit points. All are taken from the ten modules as shown in Semesters one and two. 14

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS AND THEIR LEARNING Students and their learning are supported in a number of ways: The Department has a comprehensive induction process which is tailored for each master s course in this case it comprises a four day programme; A comprehensive induction to generic Business School and University resources; The Course Director coordinates the strategic and operational aspects of the course experience which provide both academic and personal student support; The Course Committee includes all academic staff teaching on the course. The minutes of the Course Committee meetings are discussed at Department Board and received by School Board; Each student has a Studies Adviser who, in this case, is the Course Director; There is a Staff/Student Consultative Committee that meets once per Semester to discuss student issues, outline their responsibilities, deliver health and safety information and inform students about developments affecting and supporting their learning. This includes action taken in relation to the External Examiners reports. The minutes of these meetings are received by, discussed and acted upon by the Course Committee. The Students Union offers training to Student Representatives; A Course Handbook provides all necessary information about the course, the staff teaching on the course and their contact details; Each module has a detailed handbook that outlines learning outcomes, assessment requirements, module content and required reading. Each handbook follows Business School minimum content requirements as agreed by the School Teaching and Learning Committee; Academic staff place contact times and details in their module handbooks and on their office doors; The Career Development Centre helps students to determine their future career paths; There is a mini Milk Round of organisations selecting only from the MSc and Corporate Governance course. Recruitment companies present on how to be recruited and this is attended by companies such as Barclays Wealth, Deloitte and Pearse Trust; ICSA through their recruitment agency provide a showcase for student CVs; The Information Services Department assists students in accessing WebCT and in obtaining an address. Module handbooks and other materials are placed on WebCT; The Learning Resource Centre provides a dedicated Business School Librarian to support staff and students; The Student Support Department assists students with issues such as health, personal problems and disability; The Department supports students with disabilities in compliance with SENDO for entry to and progress through the course; Sport and Recreation facilities are available for students on campus; 15

11 The International Office assists in supporting overseas students; The Students Union is available for all registered students; A Chaplaincy service is available to counsel and advise students; ICSA provide a Masters student monthly news sheet detailing key changes and job vacancies. 14. CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION Applicants must hold a degree with at least 2(ii) Honours standard or equivalent or demonstrate their ability to undertake the course through the accreditation of prior experiential learning. 15. EVALUATING AND IMPROVING THE QUALITY AND STANDARD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING Quality and standards are evaluated and improved through consideration of: QAA benchmark standards for Business and ; Views of students as expressed through the Staff/Student Consultative Committee; Module monitoring processes and course team meetings (Course Committee); Views of employers and visiting/guest professors and lecturers; Views of the External Examiners for the course their visit and reports; Student performance data, career progression and feedback from alumni; University processes for revalidation and annual subject monitoring; Business School and Department learning and teaching events and conferences; Peer observation of teaching as required; Staff appraisal in terms of identifying staff development requirements; Staff membership of the Higher Education Academy and other professional bodies; Staff interaction with the Higher Education Academy and the BMAF subject centre; Staff involvement with learning and teaching research initiatives. In addition, there are University and School strategies for teaching and learning. 16

12 16. REGULATION OF STANDARDS Assessment rules: The pass mark for the taught modules and the project is 50%. Performance Levels: To be awarded the MSc in & Corporate Governance, students must pass all module assessment (pass mark 50%) in modules up to at least 180 credit points (14 taught modules plus the project). Students with an average mark of at least 70% across all assessable elements are eligible for the Master s award with Distinction. Students who do not achieve sufficient credit to be awarded the Master s degree or who choose not to proceed to the final stages of the course may exit the course with a PgD in & Corporate Governance provided they have passed modules up to a value of at least 120 credit points. Students who wish to attain Grad ICSA must complete all ten modules as shown in Semesters 1 and 2 (table B1.1) The award of a Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction may be made to students with an average mark of at least 70% across all module assessment. External Examiners There are four External Examiners in the areas of accounting, finance, corporate secretaryship and governance (this External Examiner is also the ICSA Examiner), corporate and business law and management, leadership and the project. There is an Examiner for Strategic Operations and Quality who also covers the subject on the MBS and MBA programmes. Optional modules (if not as listed above) shared with another course will be moderated by the relevant External Examiner. External Examiners are academic subject or professional experts appointed from outside the University. Their key functions are to contribute to the assurance of the standards of the award and the fair treatment of students. They are involved in the moderation and approval of assessments as required and the moderation of the marking undertaken by internal examiners. 17. INDICATORS OF QUALITY RELATING TO TEACHING AND LEARNING A score of 3.2 in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) with 80% of research outputs deemed to be of national and international quality; The School of Criminology, Politics and Social Policy staff members were entered in Social Policy and Administration Unit of Assessment 17

13 where 95% of the research activities were judged to be international in terms of originality, significance and rigour; Many staff hold PGCHEP or equivalent professional qualifications; Many of the teaching staff are members of the Higher Education Academy; Many staff are research active and/or registered for higher degrees; Members of the course team act as reviewers and authors in Team Performance, the Leadership and Organisation Development Journal, the Journal of Leadership and Organisation Studies, Business Transformations and Economics, the Journal of Strategic Change, the Journal of Development, the International Journal of Mass Customisation, the International Journal of Operations and Production, the European Journal of Industrial Training, the International Small Business Journal, the Academy of, the Journal of Communication, Communication Quarterly, Employee Relations, Human Resource Development International and the European Journal of Marketing, Public Administration, Journal of Social Policy, Policy and Politics, Government and Policy, Journal of European Public Policy, and Policy Studies. The Department has a number of Visiting Professors who are actively involved in promoting and supporting the work of the Department both externally and within the teaching and learning environment; A number of grants (BMAF, HEA, Economic and Social Research Council, Rowntree and Leverhulme) have been secured to support Learning and Teaching initiatives (such as the effective support and mentoring of new members of staff); The outcome of recent QAA Institutional Audits has been highly satisfactory; There is a healthy stream of doctoral students associated with the Schools involved in delivering the programme. 18
