Cst and efficiency is an imprtant factr as ne f main cnsideratin. Refer t the technlgy prgress, cnvergence between cmputer and cmmunicatin is very interesting. Refer t abve situatin, Gunadarma university cnsidered t implement VIP in the rganizatin. There are 9 campus lcatins f Gunadarma university which utilized sme ld analg PABX. Currently, cmmunicatin amng lcatins amng lectures and students utilize PSTN r mbile phne. The main prblem is cst f cmmunicatin and high mbility f persn. Cnsideratins f cst based n sme factrs such as budget f investment, cst f peratinal, budget f expandable, first implementatin risk, peratinal risk. Currently, there are sme prducts available in hardware and sftware level. Sftware prducts can be prpiertery r pen surce slutin. In depth cnsideratin by lking fr sme factrs were cnducted. The result f cnsideratin is t implement Asterisk pen surce sftware. In this paper, we will talk the backgrund f VIP in sectin ne. Sectin tw will discuss cnsideratin f chsing Asterisk pen surce sftware and the design which is used fr Gunadarma university based n current system by implementatin Asterisk. Cst f cmmunicatin is expensive Gunadarma has many campus lcatin N f talk is high, there are 1,000 lectures and 25,000 students Need an ecnmic, apprpriate quality f slutin fr cmmunicatin VIP is a candidate, hw t implement Asterisk pen surce t fullfill the demand. Intrductin In the past, cmputer and cmmunicatin wrked separated where cmputer develped aimed at the ip-based netwrk such as WAN and LAN that carried traditinal data like , brwsing, ftp, and business applicatins, while cmmunicatin develped aimed at the PSTN-based netwrk that carried vice traffic. At that time, mst peple never thught abut cmbining bth f the technlgies. 1.1 Shift Frm Traditinal Vice Cmmunicatin t VIP In the last decades, PSTN hlds an imprtant rle in cmmunicatin wrld as a platfrm t send vice traffic. It is undeniable that high cst f PSTN implementatin becmes main prblem fr business. In the real applicatin, PSTN is quite depending n an expensive hardware, maintenance/spare part, and system. Besides that, fr the business cmmunity, fee that still be cunted accrding t the distance has been felt burdening. It can nt be imagined hw much cst that must be spent if the business is quite big and it has an internatinal scale that ften needs a direct call amng branch arund the wrld. Mixing the cmputer and cmmunicatin netwrk technlgy becme a single netwrk cmes up as the slutin fr business. It is called as cnvergence. Since its appearance, peple start t develp mre creative ways t cmmunicate. They start changing the basic functin f cmputer which is nly able t sending and receiving data t becme a device that supprt vice cmmunicatin. As well as n cmputer, cmmunicatin device has been als changed in rder supprting cmputer functins. The reductin f csts, because VIP is relatively inexpensive. VIP creates mre services f phne system. that eliminates many prblems. VIP is mbile and flexible. Besides the advantages, VIP als had disadvantages that mstly peple d nt knw. The disadvantage using VIP include: 57 1

ViP cmpared with traditinal phne service, VIP weakness is mstly the inability t make phne calls during an electrical utage r when the Internet cnnectin is dwn fr any reasn [8]. S despite the advantages, enterprises find themselves lcked int a single vendr slutin, paying fr licensing sftware, and trapped int whatever equipment, pricing, and patches the vendr issues. T address this prblem, an pen surce slutin is needed. Table 1 the cmparisn table between Prprietary VIP Slutin and Open Surce VIP Slutin [1]. Organizatins can deply the VIP slutin in several ways withut changing their netwrk infrastructure r abandning their investments in traditinal PABX equipment. Hardware Prprietary VIP Slutin PABX applicatin run n custmer (r OEM) hardware/servers r are tied t vendrspecific ruters and switches Open Surce VIP Slutin Cmmunicatins sftware runs n ff-the-shell Linux servers and uses IO/TDM gateways frm multiple vendrs, driving dwn the cst f hardware Prtcl Prprietary prtcl uses H.323, these include prtcls that manage call setup and terminatin, negtiate channel usage, and handle authenticatin and security Open surce prtcl uses SIP (Sessin Initiatin Prtcl), it is a newer, less cmplicated prtcl that was designed specifically fr VIP. Sftware PABX applicatins remain prprietary and cstly Cmmunicatin sftware in pen surce mdel becme virtually free 2. METHODOLOGY AND ANALYSIS Service An enterprise pays the chsen vendr fr annual service and maintenance. N cmmunity f users f develpers can be tapped int and the cstumer has little influence n the future prduct rad map An enterprise pays fr a lwer-cst annual subscriptin service that cvers all services an maintenance needs. An enterprise is able t speak directly t the develper, tap int the cmmunity, and exercise direct influence n future 2.1 Apprach T Implement VIP Refer t the basic f VIP, advantages and disadvantages, and als the examples f VIP implementatin, the next step we will discuss abut appraching t implement VIP. When smene begins t implement VIP, there are sme decisins such as build VIP frm scratch by using pen surce-based, buy a ready-t-rll cmmercial versin r pt fr a middle curse. The final selectin hinges n the up-frnt cst as well as the time and resurces devted t building and cnfiguring the system. 58 2

As an example, after analyzing each apprach, yu get the result explain that yu cnsider t reduce the implementatin, peratinal cst, and yu want get many benefits. Yu shuld have a better idea f hw t begin yur VIP implementatin by using pen surce VIP like Asterisk. 2.2 Implementatin f VIP 3. Design Of VIP in Gunadarma University 3.1 Our current cnditin Designing VIP netwrk is ur next step after we chse Asterisk as ur suitable VIP system. Befre we enter the stage, we must check first detail f ur cnditin. There are tw steps which cver the technical implementatin Netwrk Assessment The purpse f netwrk assessment is making sure the rganizatin has the infrastructure in place t supprt the new system. A thrugh netwrk assessment can identify ptential perfrmance prblems befre we are knee-deep in installatin [5]. As mentined in abstract, Gunadarma University (GU) has 25,000 f students and 1000 lectures which is needed an ecnmic and mbile cmmunicatin slutins. Prblems are ccurred because f the cmmunicatin technlgy that Gunadarma using nw is cstly and des nt supprt students and lectures mbility. Based n the situatin, Gunadarma tries lking fr right slutin and intends t switch their cmmunicatin technlgy t VIP. Hwever, there are several factrs that need t be cnsidered befre implementing it includes: Netwrk Inventry such as server, ruter, wireless access pint, etc. Link Utilizatin In Table 2, we shw bandwidth usage in Gunadarma University Table 2. We can cnclude that the right VIP slutin fr Gunadarma is chsing pen surce VIP system and implementing the system by using existing netwrk s that it is able t reduce bth f the cst and risk f failure. Bandwidth Existing Phne Netwrk Figure 1 and Figure 2 shw bth f general and detail phne cnfiguratin in each campus befre implementing Asterisk. The analg PABX nly prvided the standard telephne services and was nt integrated int the data infrastructure. Hw ever, each campus has been cnnected by wireless with bandwidth capacity fr abut 10Mbps and if we lked back Table 2, the bandwidth utilizatin each campus was belw 1Mbps s it wuld quite supprt t develp Asterisk VIP system. 59 3

Here are sme questins and slutins as cnsideratin befre deciding if Asterisk is right fr Gunadarma VIP and Cnventinal PABX tgether based n Open Surce Asterisk 7 [4]. Fig. 1. Our bjectives included [7]: Intrducing a variety f cnverged cmmunicatins devices int the enterprise Understanding the benefits f an pen standards based VIP slutin 1. Hw many users will Gunadarma new PABX need t supprt? Gunadarma has 9 campus included students and 1000 lectures and intends t implement centralized Asterisk that is ging t be placed at Campus D, s we decide t use Asterisk (supprts nly 2-50 users) first as pilt prject then we will chse upgrading t a business versin (supprts until 1000 users) r higher specificatin based n Asterisk pilt prject result. 2. D yu have a high-perfrmance server with a 3-GHz CPU, 1GB f RAM and a 100MB Ethernet interface? Gunadarma has a server which is match with the specificatin (supprts abut 50 t 100 cncurrent callers). Our plan is t try t implement Asterisk n that server as pilt prject. If we get satisfied result, we plan t upgrade t better specificatin in rder t be able t fulfill users need. This kind f server csts abut $ What perating system will yur server run? Asterisk was designed fr Linux, but it als supprts OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Mac OS X and Slaris. In ur prject, we implement Linux as perating system. 4. Will yu be running VIP, r digital r analg phne lines? Gunadarma implements VIP by using the existing netwrk. The bjective is making cnvergence between ld analg phne and new VIP system. 5. D yu need t cnnect t a PTSN trunk line r cnnect rdinary telephnes t the system? Gunadarma has planned using PSTN line as back up fr Asterisk PABX system and fr making calls t PSTN user which is nt able t be cvered by Gunadarma. 6. D yu want the easy rute? If pressed fr time, lacking the equipment, r users need it service as sn as pssible, perhaps we may want t cnsider a packaged, managed service that prvides mst f what we need, such as Fnality s PABXtra package. But it is nt ur pririty. 7. What is yur budget? We have enugh budget but we must spend it wisely. Since we intend t implement VIP, we have made sme pririties included : Reducing the cst implementatin 60 4

Results Buying right hardware fr supprting this implementatin Optimizing the current cnditin ur budget estimatin is abut $2000 until $3000 fr installing Asterisk system and buying sme hardware that supprt Asterisk implementing like ip phne, single- and quad-span T1and E1 interfaces. Implementing f Design Next, design the new netwrk architecture. Firstly, we wrked with an up-t-date diagram f the existing netwrk. Then, sketch ut a new diagram incrprating the new VIP gear. This blueprint will reveal any necessary upgrades r missing cmpnents, as well as any verlaps [5]. Figure 3 and figure 4 shws a netwrk diagram f the general and detail cnfiguratin when implementing Asterisk. The Asterisk prvided all the standard telephne services and was als tightly integrated int the messaging infrastructure. This prvided users with additinal, enhanced VIP applicatins like unified messaging. Vice traffic was priritized and cnverged nt the standard prductin wide Area Netwrk (WAN) with the data traffic. Vice trunks als remained cnnected t the public switched telephne netwrk but nw thrugh Asterisk PABX, which acted as a gateway t the carrier. VIP endpints ultimately cnnected t the LAN. Existing ip phnes cnnected t the LAN thrugh the switch and existing analg phnes cnnected t the LAN by using Analg Telephne Adapter (ATA). We implemented Wi-Fi handsets n ur wireless netwrk and will fully test and ptimize them at a later date [7]. 5. Cnclusin Establishing an integrated cmmunicatins platfrm can pay significant dividends in efficiency, prductivity, and cst savings. T ensure that yur business realizes the full ptential f this pwerful technlgy, fllw a phased implementatin plan. First, define specific cmmunicatins bjectives and assemble the necessary resurces t implement the system. Next, analyze existing netwrk architecture and determine hw the legacy equipment can be integrated int the new IP-based system. Once this cnverged netwrk the backbne f yur cmmunicatins system is in place, fine tune the system prgramming t address specific business needs. VIP presents unique technical and lgistical challenges at the utset but a successful implementatin can streamline yur business cmmunicatins fr years t cme. The same cnditin happens t Gunadarma. By implementing VIP especially pen surce-based VIP like Asterisk, Gunadarma gets significant benefits mainly abut cst savings.
