1 School of Social Work Kenneth Taylor Hall, Main Street West Hamilton ON Canada L8S 4M4 Phone Ext Fax M E M O DATE: May 25, 2015 TO: FROM: RE: All Incoming Undergraduate Social Work Students Gary Dumbrill and Saara Greene Outgoing and Incoming Undergraduate Program Chairs Orientation Welcome to the School of Social Work. I would like to invite you to an Orientation at which you will meet the faculty and staff of the School as well as your classmates. This will be an opportunity to provide some introductory information about the School and to answer some of your preliminary questions concerning areas of interest of the faculty and the operation of the School. We look forward to meeting you on that day. ORIENTATION Tuesday, September 8, 2015 Celebration Hall, Kenneth Taylor Hall (KTH) B116 (Basement of KTH) 10:00 am - 12:00 pm The agenda is being developed at present but will include: - Information on the courses for your foundation year and beyond as well as the field placement experience at McMaster. - Opportunity to meet faculty members and hear something of the way they teach their subjects. - The overall structure of the school in general and the undergraduate programme in particular. - An introduction to the administrative functioning of the school. - Some opportunities to get acquainted with your fellow students and faculty members.

2 BSW (Post Degree) Registration Tips Congratulations on your acceptance to the BSW (Post Degree) Program; we look forward to seeing you in September! My name is Tammy Maikawa and I am the Administrator for the School of Social Work. One of my responsibilities is to do academic counseling for the undergraduate social work programs and so have prepared a few points you might like to keep in mind when registering. 1. Program Requirements: The BSW program is equivalent to 60 units, all of which is social work. Students in this program do not take any other courses other than social research methods (please see point 3). The normal way in which a full-time student would take this program is to do 24 units the first year (the academic session September 2015 to April 2016), 12 units in the summer (summer 2016) and then 24 units in the final year (September 2016-April 2017). Part-time students may take one, two or three courses per term, depending on their situations. 2. Course Registration: Full-time students should be registering in 24 units for the academic session September 2015 to April 2016 which would be equivalent to four courses per term. You should register in Social Work 2A06 (day or eve), 2B03E, 2BB3, 3E03, and 3F03 which is equivalent to 18 units (the last digit of each course number is the number of units the course is worth i.e. 2A06 is a second level course worth six units). You would then choose two other social work courses, one from each term so that you have a balanced timetable. In term one, select one of SW 3S03, 4C03 or 4I03; in term two, select one of 3C03, 4J03 or 4U03. Part-Time students should be selecting their courses from Social Work 2A06 (day or eve), 2B03, 2BB3, in order to work towards eligibility for field placement, as all of these second level courses are all prerequisites for the first social work field placement. Registration for level two begins the week of June 15 th. You will receive a specific enrolment date and time which will be listed in your Mosaic Student Centre. 3. Social Research Methods: If you completed a social research methods course during your first degree, you do not have to do another one. If, however, you have not done a social research methods course, then you will have to do one at some point during the BSW program. Please note that social research methods is not the same thing as statistics, so if you have done a statistics course but not a research methods course, you will still have to do research methods. The research methods course that our students take is Sociology 2Z03; however, you may take one of the other courses listed as antirequisites for Sociology. This research methods course would replace one of the two other social work courses noted above in point Statistics: Students should know that all Masters Programs require a Social Research Methods course and that is why we are requiring it at the BSW level. Many Masters Programs also require statistics; if you wish to complete a statistics course in preparation for Masters level study, our students tend to take Social Sciences 2J03. If you choose to take this course, please note that it would be in addition to the 60 units that you have to do for the BSW; it is not part of the program requirements. 5. Field Placements: You will be asked to apply for your field placement in the summer of Since FT students will be taking their 4 th year placement during , you will also have to apply for your 4 th year placement at the same time. Applications will be available on our website and will be due on November 11, Reminders will be sent by contact: The School of Social Work communicates with all students by their McMaster s. Please be sure to activate your McMaster and keep your account cleared out so that you do not miss out on important information. We do not use other accounts such as hotmail, gmail etc. If you have questions regarding your registration, I may be reached at millet@mcmaster.ca or by phoning , Ext You may also contact the Office of the Associate Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences for advice by phoning , Ext or by ing socscfac@mcmaster.ca.
