1 MEd School and Applied Child Psychology Social (Friday, July 3) Location: Last Defense Lounge 2015 Summer Orientation - Summary of events Week 1 July 3 July 10, 2015 Library Session - Introduction to Graduate Level Library Research (Monday, July 6) Time: 12:30 1:30 pm Hosted by: Dr. Alix Hayden In this session, you will be introduced to researching in the online environment that is relevant to graduate-level courses. The session will provide you with the resources most appropriate for graduate level library research, as well as will cover troublesome areas that many students encounter at the beginning of their graduate program. The session will cover: Accessing resources online Finding a known article or book Finding research articles using Google Scholar and ERIC Electronic books Distance education services Welcome Lunch for Students, Academics and Staff (Tuesday, July 7) Location: MacEwan Hall (main floor) Hosted by: Dr. Michele Jacobsen, Associate Dean Graduate Programs in Education Please join the academic and support staff of the GPE for a Stampede themed lunch. 2 Library Session - Managing Your References (Wednesday, July 8) Location: EDT 450 Hosted by: Leslie Potter Modern bibliographic databases have allowed us to discover incredible amounts of information on almost any topic. Students, researchers and faculty members are then challenged with the management of this information. Citation (or bibliographic) management software will meet this challenge by allowing you to build your own database of information. Almost all products also interact with your word processing software, allowing you to cite references (while you write) using one of literally thousands of writing styles. Each program will generate your bibliography or reference list based on the writing style that you have chosen. In this workshop, we will discuss the different options that are available today, concentrating on the programs that are supported by Libraries and Cultural resources. We will also discuss the different platforms for these programs some are web-based products while others have to be individually installed on your computer. At the end of this workshop, you will have an understanding of the purpose of citation/bibliographic software and what software is being supported by Libraries and Cultural Resources. You should be able to choose the product that is best suited to you. (Thursday, July 9) Hosted by: Drs. Barb Brown and Brenda Spencer This session, will be a conversation about the purpose and expectations for the Fall and Winter Collaboratories of Practice. 3 EdD Cohort/Specialization Get Together (Friday, July 10) Location: Adult Learning EDC 351 Languages & Diversity EDC 350 Learning Sciences (Technology) EDC 353 Leadership EDT 450 (Post-Secondary, K-12 CBE Year 1, and K-12 Year 2) Hosted by: Specialisation Academics These sessions will offer the opportunity for EdD students in the specialization areas of Curriculum and Learning (EDCL), Adult Learning (EDAL), Languages and Diversity (EDLD), Learning Sciences (EDLS), Leadership (EDLP) to meet academics in their specialization areas. We will then focus on advanced research resources including: SAGE Research methods Proquest Dissertations Current Awareness EdD session Navigating Candidacy (Tuesday, July 14) Location: EDT 450 Hosted by: Drs. Michele Jacobsen and Jim Field and 2 post-candidacy students. In this session, the Graduate Program Directors will co-host a conversation about preparing for Candidacy with the Candidacy Portfolio and Research Proposal. Med session What is a Collaboratory? (Tuesday, July 14) Hosted by: Dr.Jim Brandon This session will be a conversation about action research and the collaboratory of practice. 4

5 Studying in an Online Environment (Wednesday, July 15) Hosted by Alicia Baudais, GPE Distance Coordinator and Luciano da Rosa dos Santos, Facilitator of Teaching and Learning This face to face session is for all online Graduate Programs in Education students. It will provide students with tips for success, self-motivation, group work, being responsible for their own learning in an online environment.
