2 Welcome Note Good day and thank you for your interest in the Part-time Practical Nursing program at Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. This information package will provide you with valuable information regarding the program, application process and deadlines, and how to prepare for your pre-admission test. 3 GENERAL INFORMATION PRACTICAL NURSING DIPLOMA PROGRAM (PART-TIME) Applicants must apply through OCAS then locate Humber College on the site Application should be completed on-line Program intake occurs only in September Applications open every October and close when the program is full When applying please indicate in the appropriate box that you are part-time Students must first write pre-admission test for their application to be reviewed by the deciding committee After completing the application. You will be contacted by to schedule your preadmission test. Pre-admission testing includes math, biology, chemistry and English (equivalent to grade 11/12 level). Program length 3 years and 4 months (2 evenings a week and Sunday/ Monday clinical in the second and third year). N.B. Evening classes change each semester. Student will attend a meeting in the spring to meet cohort members and discuss program. Potential students may wish to enroll in any of the following non-nursing courses to get a head start. 6 REQUIREMENTS FOR CLINICAL As a part of the student enriching learning experience are expected to complete clinical hours within an acute care or long-term setting. Students have the opportunity to practice foundational nursing skills in a controlled setting. However, prior to commencing clinical, there are specific requirements that candidates must complete. Please note that the following are required prior to attending clinical: Standard First Aid CPR Level C Basic Rescuer-HCP Mask Fit Testing Immunization Passport Criminal Reference Check Suicide intervention Certificate (ASIST) Once the above requirements have been fulfilled, students must take the documents to the Humber Health Centre. The Health Centre will review and verify that the clinical requirements, have been met, and issue a Humber clinical passport indicating clearance for placement. For fees and more information visit or call x You will require the above documents for clinical which begins Spring/Summer You DO NOT need to have these documents in place by September Due to the lengthy process, students are strongly encouraged to initiate the process in Fall It is essential that the above requirements are completed prior to commencing your clinical placements in the Spring of Students will not be permitted to enter clinical without passport clearance. The first clinical rotation is NURS This course is held at the North campus in the Clinical Simulation Lab (Summer 2015). Please note that there will be a one-time lab kit fee added to your NURS tuition. Your lab kit will include a stethoscope, Blood Pressure cuff, dressing tray, pen light etc. This equipment will be utilized thorough out the entire program in clinical. The second and third clinical rotations (NURS & NURS ) will be held in a clinical setting (acute or long-term care) with a group of 8 students, and a clinical instructor. These clinical rotations will be held on Sunday and Monday for 6 hours each day, from 0700 to approximately 1330 hrs for a total of 15 weeks each. You will be required to be free on Sunday and Mondays to attend clinical during these rotations. 6

7 REQUIREMENTS FOR CLINICAL (continued) NURS clinical is a mandatory community volunteering clinical experience. Students must volunteer in various health care settings for a total of 128 hours within the same setting. Examples of areas that students can volunteer in are doctor s offices, walk-in clinics, and daycares (excluding hospitals). If you do not complete your required volunteer hours, you will be pre-registered for NURS clinical. In which you will be required to complete a 6 week community rotation 16 hours a week totaling 96 hrs. Community setting chosen by your program advisor. Pregrad NURS 253, is the final clinical rotation. Students are required to attend clinical Fulltime. You will not be able to schedule Pregrad around work schedules as you will be following the assigned nurse s schedule in a hospital or long-term care setting. Students are expected to complete a total of 495 hours to earn full credit for this clinical course working approximately 40 hrs per week. Please note that Pregrad shift include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. 7

8 Terminal Learning Outcomes The Graduates of the Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning Practical Nursing Program will: Recognize and accept diverse individuals as biopsychosocial and spiritual beings interacting with the environment. Use the nursing process and critical thinking to provide safe and effective nursing care in a variety of practice settings. Practice autonomously and collaboratively in practical nursing roles, consulting with other health care providers where necessary. Communicate effectively, demonstrating therapeutic interpersonal skills. Practice advocacy for the individual, family, community and their profession. Assume responsibility for continuous professional learning. Practice within the legal practical nursing role as defined in the Standards of Nursing Practice. Practice within the Nursing Code of Ethics. 8

9 Frequently asked questions about the Part-time Practical Nursing Program 1. When is the start date for the program? The program starts every September, there is no January or May start/ intake. 2. Can I transfer directly into the program from another college? You cannot transfer directly from another college. You must apply through OCAS and successfully complete preadmission testing in order to be an eligible student in the program. If you are successful, some of your non-nursing courses may be transferable if you have a copy of the course outline and official grade transcript. Applications for non-nursing course exemption are completed through the Liberal Arts Department. Please refer to the following link 3. Can I transfer my nursing credits from another program? Unfortunately, Humber College does not accept nor transfer nursing credits earned in other academic institutions. 4. As a mature student (19years and older) do I require the pre-requisite courses in order to apply to the program? Applicants must have pre-requisites of Grade 12 English, Math, Biology, and Chemistry, unless you are deemed a mature student (19 years of age or older). In which the following is not required. 5. As a mature or post-graduate student do I need to complete preadmission test? Yes, all applicants are required to write the pre-admission test regardless of their educational background or experience. 6. Can I prepare for the pre-admission test? Yes, there are many ways to prepare for preadmission testing. Some applicants review various high school textbooks in biology, math and chemistry. There is also a preparation guide, available through Amazon called The Complete Preparation Guide Health Occupations Entrance Exams. By Learning Express. This guide reviews all topics that candidates may be tested on. Some applicants choose to complete the tests simply on the knowledge level they currently have without any review. It is a personal decision. For those who may need a formal review Humber College offers an Academic Upgrading, Literacy basic skills course. Classes are offered 9:00am 2:30 pm Monday to Friday. 10 7. Do I need to pass the admission test to be accepted into the program? Yes, you need to pass the entire test to be considered for the program. The following minimum grades are required to be a eligible candidate in the program: Math 70%, English 70%, Biology 70%, Chemistry 70%. 8. Do I get paid for pre-grad placement? Pre-grad is a clinical placement, and students are required to complete 495 hours to obtain credit. You do not get paid for this hospital/nursing home placement. 9. Can I transfer to the full-time program once I am in the part-time program? If you begin the program as a part-time student and wish to transfer into full-time studies at a later date, this may be possible as long as there is space available in the full-time program. Please note that students have to complete enough credits to transfer directly into the appropriate semester. The curriculum is exactly the same in the full-time and part-time program. 10. Can I work during the last 4 months when enrolled in Pregrad? During the last four months of the program you will be in a full-time pre-grad placement and you will follow the schedule of a preceptor. You may be assigned to do 12 or 8 hour shifts, days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. You will be in the hospital or nursing home setting and expected to work approximately 40 hours a week depending on your preceptor s schedule. You cannot adjust your pre-grad schedule around your work schedule. 11. How long do I have to complete the program? The program takes 3 years and 4 months to complete if taken continuously. If interrupted, you must complete all the courses within 5 years of your start date in the part-time practical nursing program. 12. Am I eligible for OSAP? Unfortunately, students in the part-time program are not eligible to receive OSAP funding. According to the ministry you have to be taking 60% of the full-time course load to be eligible for funding. 13. How much does the program cost? The price of the courses will vary depending on the number of credits. For example a clinical course will cost approximately $1, and a theory course will cost approximately $ The total cost of the program is approximately $10, Students pay on a per course basis. 10

11 14. How do I pay for my courses? You will pre-registered, and you will be invoiced. You will pay for the courses that you take. A course calendar will be given to successful applicants at the June orientation session outlining the course for each semester. You will be able to pay on-line, via phone or at a financial institution. 15. What days do I attend class? The courses are offered in the evening from approximately 6 pm-10 pm. The nights of the week vary from semester to semester however courses are not offered on Friday evenings. The clinical rotations are on Sundays and Monday during the day (7 am-1 pm). The first clinical rotation does not begin until the second year of study. 11
