1 APPENDIX I SOCIAL WORK/SOCIAL SERVICES WORK PROGRAMS SOCIAL WORK/SOCIAL SERVICES WORK PROGRAMS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA INSTITUTION PROGRAM CREDENTIAL NOTES College of the New Caledonia College of the New Caledonia BC Open University Malaspina / courses count as first year of program Pre- This stream is designed for students wanting to apply to UNBC Bachelor program. Students must have completed first year courses before entering the presocial work program 29 credit course Prerequisite: ENGL 106, Written Communication, or post-secondary introductory English, and PSYC 102, Introductory Psychology II, or equivalent. Students who have completed Grade 12 English with a B average may complete the voluntary English Language and Writing Assessment or the Language Proficiency Index and are exempt from ENGL 106 if they obtain a writing level score of 5 or 6. Sixty (60) documented hours of people-oriented volunteer or paid work experience in public or private social service agencies in the last five years Completion of the program also earns credit towards the Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care degree (available at Malaspina) and Bachelor of degree at the University of Victoria Okanagan Available full-time and part-time Bachelors B.S.W. Program is a member of the Canadian Association of Schools of, and a new member (2001) of the International Association of Schools of. Okanagan with Child Welfare Specialization Bachelors with special designation Offered since 2000 Specialization is a concentrated track of six specific courses taken in the normal elective space of the Bachelor of Program. The Specialization is noted as a designation on the student's graduating transcript and diploma. 1

2 SOCIAL WORK/SOCIAL SERVICES WORK PROGRAMS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA INSTITUTION PROGRAM CREDENTIAL NOTES Douglas College Community Social Services (45 credit) - (60 credit) They meet Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) Level II Competencies, as required to prepare students to write an MCFD exam. The student then receives delegation status to be eligible to participate in a fourth year practicum in child protection. Graduates from this program may receive transfer credit to the School of Child and Youth Care at the University of Victoria, of the Fraser Valley and Malaspina Langara College Coordinated Part-time and full-time The certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the two four-month terms and subsequent five-week block practicum. A Co-ordinated Social Service is awarded to students who have also completed an additional 30 credits of academic studies, and an additional 10 courses (minimum 30 Langara credits) of Arts and Science courses. At least six credit hours from the offerings of the English Department must be completed. If you have a Langara College certificate, you may transfer in the 10 courses (minimum 30 Langara credits) of Arts and Science courses from another institution provided they were earned before the completion of your certificate. The last 50% of your studies must be completed at Langara. Northern Lights College University of Victoria Preference is given to candidates who are at least 21 years of age This program is currently under review. Bachelors - Masters Offered through School of. Bachelors program is accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of. Bachelors students can specialize in Child Welfare or First Nations or First Nations Child Welfare. Bachelors is also offered through Distance Ed. Admission to Bachelors program requires completion of the first two years (30 units) of an undergraduate program at the University of Victoria, or the equivalent credits and standing at another university or community college. Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 out of 9.0 on UVic scale (between C+ and B -) on their last 12 transferable units. Bachelors students complete two field practice placements, one in third year and one in fourth year. Field practica occur in a wide range of government and private agencies and small, non-profit societies. 2

Admission to the MSW Program requires a BSW degree and substantial experience in the field. Candidates should have at least two years of post-baccalaureate professional experience. A B+ average (6.00 GPA in University of Victoria terms) for the last two years of university work is the requirement for admission to the program. University of Northern BC Bachelors Masters The focus of the BSW is oriented towards social work in northern and remote areas, First Nations, women and the human services, and community practice and research. Accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of (CASSW) BSW will normally consist of two years of general university studies (60 credit hours) and two years of professional social work courses (60 credit hours). The BSW is articulated with recognized Social Services programs in Northern British Columbia Full-time and part-time studies University of BC Bachelor Master The School of Work & Family Studies delivers a single, integrated BSW program which can be completed in two years on a full-time basis, or in three years on a part-time basis. The curriculum includes courses on theory, policy research and practice. Full-time and part-time studies of Fraser Valley with First Nations Option Similar to the, the First Nations Option program prepares aboriginal students, or those with strong ties to aboriginal communities, to work with First Nations people both on and off reserves. of Fraser Valley Bachelor Bachelor with Child Welfare Specialization Social Service - of the Cariboo Bachelor programs provide students with employment-related skills while at the same time allowing them to earn up to one and a half years of credit towards a BSW at UCFV UCFV Bachelor of program is a candidate for Accreditation with the Canadian Association of Schools of. The Social Service program is nine months long. Students take six courses, plus a Field Work course, during the first semester (September - December). During the next two semesters 3

During the next two semesters (January - May) there are more specific courses for the specialty, and two more field workexperiences. There is a ladder from the Social Service certificate into the Bachelor of degree at UCC. The degree offers an Interior B.C. perspective on social work careers, built on the base of a broad liberal arts education. BSW is accredited by The Canadian Association of Schools and. Bachelor offers Child Welfare Specialization designation. 4

5 INSTITUTION PROGRAM CREDENTIAL COMMENTS Institute of Indigenous Government of Fraser Valley Associate of Arts New (fall 2003) two-year Associate of Arts program which focus on knowledge and skills relevant to the Aboriginal and non-aboriginal areas of social work - Support methods, community healing, social and cultural understanding. Substance Abuse Counselling - One-year post-graduate certificate is offered in partnership with the Continuing Education Department for people already holding certificates, diplomas, and degrees in related fields. This part-time (nine month) program provides training for professionals working in the fields of addictions, human services, social work, education, health, and corrections. University of BC Family Life Educator Undergraduate Degree students must complete two practica, one in the first year and another in the second. Students can also challenge one of the practica based on prior volunteer or work experience. Program met the Standards and Criteria required for the Provisional Certified Family Life Educator designation from the National Council on Family Relations. Provisional Certified Family Life Educator Info: * It is the only approved program in Canada and the first approved program outside the United States. University of BC Malaspina Bachelor of Arts Family Studies Major or Minor Child and Youth Care First Nations This as an academic program open to students registered in the Faculty of Arts. The Bachelor of Arts Family Studies Major/Minor examines the North American family and its alternatives in a multidisciplinary, life span perspective. The major allows you to specialize in family studies as a single field of study. It may lead to graduate study if a sufficiently high average is obtained. The program reflects the needs of First Nations peoples and is continually developing with involvement from the First Nations communities of the Cowichan area, as well as from the First Nations students who bring the teachings of their communities into the program. Students who successfully complete the two-year program, including 300 hours of practicum, will be eligible for Malaspina s in Child and Youth Care. This program is referred to as a ladder program. Students exiting the program with a CYC diploma may choose to apply their earned credits toward a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care at Malaspina University-College, the of the Fraser Valley, or the University of Victoria. Full-time and part-time basis 5

6 Northw est Community College Nicola Valley Institute of Technology Integrated Human Services: Social Service The program integrates university credit courses with social service career courses. The Social Service program is offered on a full-time and part-time basis. The one-year Social Service Program certificate includes 2 semesters plus practicum which counts as the first of the diploma program. The two-year Social Service Program diploma includes 4 semesters plus practicum Degree Program emphasizes the knowledge and skills relevant to First Nations and mainstream individuals, families and communities. NVIT works to increase students' knowledge and skills based on First Nations culture, values, and philosophy. Elders are a valued part of program. Preference will be given to students who identify themselves as being of Aboriginal origin. Some seats may be available to non-aboriginal students. University of Regina First Nations University of Canada (University/College ) Formerly Saskatchewan Indian Federated College Aboriginal Indian Social Work of S. W. B.S.W. Master of Social Work and a Master of Aboriginal Bachelors - Masters of Aboriginal Social Work Part-time and full-time BSW and MSW programs are accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of. Faculty of Community Education Centres (CECs) is located in Prince Albert and Saskatoon. Students in Indian are, with few exceptions, required to take the same classes during the first year of study. Before the beginning of the second year, they may decide whether to continue in either the or Degree program. Classes taken toward a are also applicable to the Degree program. The School of Indian working with the Indian Child and Family Services to develop a degree in social work with a concentration on Child Welfare. The School has signed a memorandum of understanding with the (3) Universities: Calgary, Regina and Manitoba to work collaboratively on child welfare issues. McGill University Health and Undergraduate They are also looking at a combination of a health and social development, social work degree at some point in time. Focus on the development of skills in the day-to-day management of the provision of services in terms of both efficiency and human criteria. 6

7 McGill University McGill University McGill University Yukon College Aboriginal Practice Northern Practice Additions, Mental Health and Illness, Interdisciplinar y Field of Aging, Loss and Bereavement Northern Practice Undergraduate Undergraduate Graduate Bachelor of Social Work Aims to prepare Aboriginals for social work practice in their own communities. In addition to the general requirements, applicants must provide two (2) letters of recommendation from their aboriginal community. This 10 course (30 credit) program offered by the Centre for Continuing Education on behalf of the School of Available only in the North and is for Inuit community workers employed by Nouveau Québec. The purpose of the program is to prepare Inuit community workers for social work practice within their communities. * Graduate Programs are under review no applications are currently being accepted. Offered in cooperation with the Yukon First Nations, and the University of Regina, a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of degree. The degree is granted by the University of Regina. Cultural Camp: This 9-credit hours required course is a unique feature of the program. The course provides students with an opportunity to learn about traditional First Nations values, philosophy, spirituality and ceremonies through participation in a 10-day experiential camp under the direction of Yukon First Nations Elders. Cultural camp is offered every two years. Seneca College Accelerated Program SSW Full and part-time studies SSW program starts in fall and winter. SSW Accelerated (3 semesters/35 weeks). Eligibility: B.A. graduates in the Social Sciences Under special circumstances, graduates from related program areas may be considered Cambrian College Social Service (GRPG) SSW concentrates on the needs, challenges, and concerns of Canada's elderly population (2 year program) Graduates of the / option will have the opportunity to obtain a B.A. in from Laurentian University in Sudbury and will receive advanced standing in that program 7

8 Cambrian College Cambrian College Lakehead University Native Child and Family (NCFW) Native Community Healing and Wellness (MBNA) of Applied Arts Honours Bachelor Masters with Specialization in Primarily a social service program - unique blend of Western academic theory and practice with that of traditional knowledge and its application sets the Native Child and Family Program apart from other social service programs. The third and fifth semesters will be field placements. Program will promote an integrated approach to healing and wellness strategies in its interdisciplinary approach including incorporating strategies for reducing family violence. This worker will be trained in an integrated approach to identify physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the individual, the family and the community in consultation with related community workers Lakehead offers two different Honours Bachelor's degree (HBSW) programs as well as a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. The four-year HBSW program is designed to combine a liberal arts education with a professional education. The One-year HBSW program is designed for those students who have completed the requirements of an approved Bachelor's degree other than social work and related practice experience. Both programs are offered on a full-time and a part-time basis. The MSW and the HBSW courses are available and designed for full and part-time studies through spring and summer, fall and winter. Both Bachelors and Masters Degrees are accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of. Simon Fraser University Minor in Postbaccalaureate in Masters The SFU Research Centre (GRC) was established in 1982 to: conduct research on individual and population aging foster and facilitate research by providing a consulting service serve as a central source of information for the academic and broader community It is an active member of two inter-university research consortia: the Canadian Consortium for Health Promotion Research which links 14 universities from across Canada and the Canadian Study of Health and Aging which links 18 universities. This two-year diploma program is designed to prepare generalist social work practitioners. Using First Nations traditions and values, you will learn how to establish respectful and effective relationships with individuals, groups, and communities * educated in the areas of traditional First Nations helping practices, Cree Language, Cree culture, social work theory, counselling methods, crisis intervention, and social advocacy Transferrable to the University of Calgary "two years for two years."
