3 Mission Statement The mission of our MSW program is to educate competent and compassionate social workers for advanced clinical social work practice with children, adolescents, adults, elders, couples, families, and groups. Our graduates possess critical thinking skills and engage in evidence-based clinical practice, with a deep respect for human diversity and strengths, and with a desire to continue lifelong learning and professional development. 1

4 Master of Social Work Florida Atlantic University (FAU) was founded in 1964 in Boca Raton, on an 850-acre site located about three miles from the Atlantic Ocean. It is a distributed university, with courses now offered at seven campuses, and has been listed as one of American s Top 100 Best Buys for Colleges. The Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program is designed to prepare students for advanced entry into the social work profession. The student will acquire a foundation of theoretical knowledge, practice skills, and professional values necessary for delivering quality social work services. Additionally, the student will acquire an advanced level of knowledge and skill in the focus areas of children, adolescents and families; adults and families; or elders and families. The program prepares current and future social work practitioners, supervisors, managers and leaders in clinical-community settings to empower individuals, families and communities. The MSW curriculum provides the opportunity for students to meet the educational qualifications for licensure in the State of Florida as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. 2

5 The MSW Program has five goals: Goal 1: (evidence-based, clinical social work practice) To prepare competent and compassionate MSW graduates for evidence-based clinical social work practice for clients across the lifespan, based on the integration of self-awareness, knowledge, professional values and ethics, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills. Goal 2: (community-engaged/located) To prepare MSW graduates to become community-engaged practitioners and leaders who understand and can work effectively with diverse populations and contemporary societal issues in south Florida. Goal 3: (state licensure) To prepare MSW graduates with the academic foundation for obtaining state licensure for clinical social work practice. Goal 4: (lifelong learning) To provide MSW graduates with an appreciation for how knowledge is discovered, challenged, and transformed, including a desire to pursue continued professional development through lifelong learning. Goal 5: (post-msw studies) To provide MSW graduates with the intellectual and practical foundation that they will need if they choose to pursue post-msw studies, such as a PhD, DSW, or other advanced social work education and training. 3

6 Accreditation is important for all social work programs. The BSW and MSW programs were re-affirmed by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in The Admissions Requirements for the MSW include an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. No specific undergraduate major is required, but a broad liberal arts preparation is essential. While a major in Social Work is seen as desirable, other undergraduate majors are given equal consideration for the program. A grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate course work is required. A personal statement and three professional letters of reference are also required. The total application packet will be considered when making admission decisions. All applicants applying for the Advanced Standing Program must have graduated from a CSWE-accredited under graduate Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program within the last five years, and achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher. One of the three letters of reference must be from the student s undergraduate Director of Field Education. Highly promising applicants who do not precisely meet the above GPA standards can petition the MSW Admission Committee for exceptional consideration. If accepted for admission into the MSW Program, all incoming students are required to attend a mandatory MSW orientation conducted the week prior to the start of classes in August. The Advanced Standing Program is available to a limited number of applicants who have completed their BSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program and met other requirements for MSW applicant. Undergraduate coursework will be examined and additional coursework may be required prior to beginning the Advanced Standing Program. Transfer Credit: Students transferring from another CSWE-accredited MSW program may transfer a maximum of 30 semester hours for the 60-semester-hour program. MSW courses completed at other universities will be evaluated as to their relevance and similarity to FAU courses. All courses that are applied toward the degree must have been successfully completed within three years of entrance into the FAU program and the student must have earned a grade of B or above. A grade of B- will not be accepted. No graduate credit is granted for correspondence, life experience or extension work. Time Limitation: Candidates for the MSW must complete all degree requirements within five consecutive years after initial registration in the program. 4 The Degree Requirement for the MSW includes 60 semester credits. It is designed for full-time or planned part-time students. Full-time students take 15 credits each semester including classroom coursework and a field practicum. The program consists of the foundation curriculum (30 semester credits) and concentration curriculum (30 semester credits). The planned part-time program is designed for

7 the student to graduate in four years. A one-year Advanced Standing Program (see above) consists of concentration year curriculum and a field practicum (30 semester credits). A planned two-year, part-time Advanced Standing Program is available. Program Design: FAU s School of Social Work adheres to the organizing principle of the generalist perspective of social work practice in the foundation curriculum. The knowledge, values and skills of the generalist practice perspective focuses on the interface between client systems with emphasis on the theoretical underpinning of social and economic justice, empowerment and the strengths perspective. The generalist perspective recognizes and accounts for the important reciprocal relationship that exists between people and their environment. Within this dual perspective, the curriculum emphasizes the purposes of the profession that seeks to develop the full potential of diverse client systems (individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities) by linking them with informal and formal resources, increasing caring and evidence-based problemsolving between and within client systems, and influencing social policy to promote social and economic justice across client systems. During the concentration curriculum, students may specialize in work with children, adolescents and families; adults and families; and elders and families. Content in the concentrations will prepare students for advanced level of social work practice that will be guided by populations-at-risk and problem areas, organizational setting, community resources, selected intervention modalities according to client system needs, research, evaluation and documentation. Advisement: All students will be assigned an advisor upon admission to the program. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor regularly. The Child Welfare Certificate Program prepares BSW and MSW students for a career working with abused or neglected children and their families. The certificate program provides a foundation of knowledge in evidence-based practice, policy and programs that impact vulnerable children s lives. Students develop practice skills in areas relevant to children s services including substance abuse and family violence. Additional information is available for interested students. The Aging Certificate Program prepares MSW students for a ca reer in service of aging populations. The program provides a specialized knowledge and evidence-based practice skills, practice evaluation, research and policy in order to ensure the delivery of quality services to this diverse population. The goal of the certificate program is to ensure there are qualified social workers providing services to elders across the continuum of care.
