2 ST STEPHEN'S COLLEGE Post-Master s Art Therapy Certificate Program PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Post-Master s Art Therapy Certificate program is designed for those who have previously completed a Master s or Doctoral degree in a related field. This program is open to students from any faith tradition and is intended for those interested in professional training that integrates their professional and academic learning alongside their personal development and interest in spiritually informed practice. Upon completion of this program students will be eligible for professional membership as an art therapist. This program is an approved art therapy training program with the Canadian Art Therapy Association. Whatever students professional credentialing objectives, the onus will be on them to consult with their chosen professional association s registering body, acquire information about specific membership categories and specifications, and meet the expressed requirements, both during and subsequent to their academic training. LENGTH OF PROGRAM The Post-Master s Art Therapy Certificate is equivalent to 16 months of full-time study. Students are expected to complete the certificate in 2-5 years; after 5 years students must consult with the Department Chair to implement a completion plan. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 1. Master s Degree from an institution of higher education approved by a Canadian provincial authority, or the demonstrated educational equivalent, in the area of health sciences, theology, social work, occupational therapy, counselling, healing arts, education, psychology, fine arts and the expressive arts, or the humanities and human sciences. The Master s degree must have included a thesis. Grade average minimum must be 72%/B/ The academic ability to engage in graduate education; academic background in counselling and/or some experience in a helping role are desirable. 3. Background experience in the fine arts, studio art, and the artistic creative process. 4. Evidence of commitment and ability to integrate spiritually-informed training into professional practice. 5. Upon successful admission to the Program, students will be required to produce a Security Clearance Check. ST STEPHEN S COLLEGE HISTORY IN BRIEF AND DEGREE-GRANTING AUTHORITY St Stephen s College is a graduate school founded by The United Church of Canada and an Affiliated College of the University of Alberta in Edmonton. An Act to Incorporate St Stephen s College (April 27, 1927; amended 1968) authorizes St Stephen s College to confer degrees in theology. The College also teaches undergraduate and graduate University of Alberta credit courses, through the Faculty of Arts. St Stephen s College is an Associate Member of The Association of Theological Schools in The United States and Canada. APPLICATION PROCEDURE All documents submitted in support of this application become the property of St Stephen s College and are not returnable to the applicant or transferable to any third party, with the exception of original art work which will be returned to the applicant if digital copies are provided. All materials will be kept strictly confidential. All materials must be received in order for your application to be considered complete. Prospective students should submit the following documentation, in typed form where applicable: 1. The attached application form with required statements. 2. The non-refundable application fee. 3. Official transcripts of all previous degrees mailed directly to St Stephen s College from the degree-granting institution. Master s Degree in related area (with thesis) must have GPA minimum 72%. Applicants whose transcripts are in a language other than English must submit certified translations of all transcripts being submitted as part of the application. *Applicants applying with a Masters Degree in an area unrelated to health sciences, theology, social work, occupational therapy, counselling, healing arts, education, psychology, fine arts/expressive arts, or the humanities and human sciences must apply for equivalency. 4. If language of instruction for prior degree was not English, proof of satisfactory score on an approved English language examination (TOEFL, IELTS, or CAEL), referring to English Language Proficiency policy in Academic Calendar. 5. Curriculum vitae (resumé) in summary form. 3 Other experience, education or training in art, psychotherapy, counselling and/or spirituality related to proposed program 6. A 2-3 page statement about why the applicant wants to study art therapy at St Stephen s College and how the arts have influenced the applicant s personal development and spiritual journey. 7. A 3-5 page document that includes an artist statement and a visual arts and/or expressive arts portfolio. Applicants are required to include 3-5 examples of artwork (paper copies and/or digital versions are acceptable) with descriptions. 8. Two letters of reference forwarded directly to St Stephen s College, using Reference Form which is part of this application. Application deadline: Applications can be submitted throughout the year, with an annual application deadline of February 1 for Canadian applicants and November 1 for international applicants. Applicants requiring an evaluation of academic equivalencies must submit their completed application to the College by Dec 1, 2015 (Sep 1, 2015 for international applicants). Interview: Applicants will attend an admission interview as part of the application process. Intake interviews will reflect on the applicant s learning goals and determine the applicant s appropriateness for admission to the program. Orientation and first core course: Upon admission, students are expected to register for the St Stephen s College Orientation Day (April 23, 2016). One of the co-requisite courses, Intro to Psychotherapy and Spirituality, takes place Monday through Friday immediately following Orientation. COURSE SELECTION Courses will be selected in consultation with the Department Chair. Courses offered at St Stephen s College are normally delivered as one-week intensives. The expectation is that the student will follow normal registration procedures as outlined in the College s Calendar. All courses have pre-course preparation, one week on site (Mon-Fri, 9:00am- 5:00pm), and a post-course assignment. Further details are available in course outlines. EQUIVALENCIES PROCEDURE An application from persons with an unrelated Master s Degree will be considered if the applicant possesses satisfactory alternate educational experience in the area of health sciences, theology, social work, occupational therapy, counselling, healing arts, education, psychology, fine arts/expressive arts, or the humanities and human sciences. In such cases, the Dean will require evidence of readiness to proceed. The Dean's decision whether or not to accept an application is final. Prospective applications for whom special consideration is required should submit all supporting documentation (see Admission Requirements), together with any additional assessments, transcripts, and certificates earned in lieu of a related Master s Degree. A non-refundable equivalency fee of $225 must be included. The Dean s Office will review all documentation, and where it is deemed further exploration is warranted, may assign additional requirements to test eligibility. If equivalency is granted, the applicant will be invited to the intake process, and will pay the non-refundable regular application fee. This minimum tuition is payable regardless of the number of years students take to complete the program. A 10% penalty is applied to payments received after the due date. Students may avoid program fee increases by paying the total amount at any time. The continuation fee applies after the scheduled time limit of four years from the onset of the program. All fees are subject to change without notice. ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL MATTERS Reading material costs (texts and course packs) need to be considered when planning the program, and may be $100-$200 per course. Candidates are responsible for their own accommodation arrangements, and living costs. Student Loans Currently Post-Master s Art Therapy Certificate students are not eligible for Government student loan funding. International Applicants are advised to clarify their eligibility for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Program (AHCIP), and are strongly encouraged to purchase adequate coverage when not covered by AHCIP (ie. for studies shorter than 12 months duration). All co-requisites must be completed at the graduate level. Assignments include a progress report and integrative paper/minor art therapy project. The counselling practica should be arranged so as to meet student's desired Professional Association requirements.
