The subject MUST include the course number: Nurs 361 Course website: Course Description: Preview of academic and clinical opportunities for baccalaureate level nurses with an emphasis on leadership roles and advanced practice. An experiential component is included in this course which will supplement didactic content. This course is open to licensed registered nurses progressing toward the BSN degree. Pre: Licensed RN only. Offered spring semester only. Note: Restricted to Nursing students only. The RN learner will explore the role of the student as a life-long learner and investigate valuable life-skills that can apply toward successful college studies as well future nursing practice. Distance Learning: Students in online (Distance Learning DL) courses have special needs that can be facilitated by using information and resources from this website: Writing Intensive (WI): This course has been approved as meeting the WI requirements for UH Hilo. The criteria for WI designation include a minimum of 16 typed pages of writing (or 1

2 equivalent) per semester. The writing must be used to promote increased student understanding of the course materials as well as to help students improve their writing skills. The writing must be the result of interaction (conferences, discussing drafts, etc.) between the student and the instructor and must play a major role in determining the final grade for the course. Courses which are designated as WI are capped at 20 students in order that meaningful and frequent instructor-student interaction be possible. For a fuller description of WI, please go to: Course Objectives At the end of this course, the learner will be able to: I. Provider of Care A. Practice 1. Compare and contrast the roles and responsibilities of the BSN and non- BSN nurse in various health care settings. 2. Describe the decision-making and problem-solving skills expected of a BSN nurse as a life-long learner and as a clinician. B. Teacher 3. Explore the dynamics of teaching and learning. 4. Compare and contrast the teaching foci of the BSN nurse. C. Communicator 4. Analyze the significance of effective communication skills to facilitate the role of the BSN nurse as a professional practitioner. 5. Develop strategies to incorporate accepted protocols for effective communication within various levels of healthcare. II. Planner and Coordinator of Care 6. Describe the effects of differentiated practice and expectations of the BSN RN in planning and coordinating client care. III. Investigator 7. Identify at least one researchable question related to the differentiated practice of BSN and non-bsn nurses. 8. Discuss the role of the BSN nurse in promoting evidence-based practice. IV. Professional 9. Describe the importance of life-long learning on professional advancement. V. Promoter of Transcultural Caring 10. ISBN Textbooks can be purchased online from the UH Hilo Bookstore at: Teaching Methodology: Multiple teaching methods will be used, which may include: online instructional methods, topical discussions, guest interviews, and various types of instructional media. The online course uses Laulima (a version of Sakai) instructional management system. Internet resources, current professional journals and other types of outside resources will augment the assigned readings from the required textbook. Students are expected to access the course website on a regular basis (at least once a week) and participate in all course requirements. Weekly readings, journals and/or learning activities are used to guide the learner in understanding the week s topic. A 3

4 special experience to investigate the job of a BSN (or higher) educated RN will be arranged according to the student s schedule. Organization of schedule: Weekly requirements will be used to review course content. The week begins at 7:00 am on a Tuesday and ends at 7:00 am on the following Tuesday. The Tuesday deadline will allow students better access to the instructor on a weekday to clarify requirements prior to assignment deadlines. Each week s assignments are locked after the deadline. Course Requirements 1. Weekly Learning Activities 750 points (50 points/ wk) Description: Weekly learning activities include completing required reading and assignments listed for each week. A separate document Topical Outline and Assignments details the schedule of assignments. This course is designed to facilitate the adult learner and focuses on exercises to stimulate self-evaluation and personal improvement. There are multiple short exercises per week that require the learner to keep pace with the weekly deadlines to be successful. The journals and activity questions are submitted to the instructor each week in the ASSIGNMENTS section on the course website. Points will be assigned in proportion to the numbers of required submissions for that week. An observational session will be arranged in a practice setting that provides an opportunity to note the special skills of a nurse in an expanded role who holds a BSN or higher degree. This session will be coordinated with the student, agency, and instructor prior to the experience. Feedback of the experience will be provided using the BSN Practice Feedback Sheet and receives points as part of the weekly assignment. (See separate Practice Experience Guidelines and Grading Criteria). 2. Weekly Bulletin/ Discussion Posting 450 points (30 points/week) Description: A weekly written submission into the Class Discussion section is required. The week is from 12 noon Tuesday of the designated week to Tuesday of the following week. A start-up question will be posted for each week by the instructor or designated leader. Each student's posting should be a substantive comment on the topic/reading/exercises for that week with reactions and interpretations to that topic. Interactive responses are greatly encouraged, but must be to at least to one other classmate. Points will be given for each week s entry. Partial credit may be assigned. A. Example of a substantive entry: (full credit) "According to U.S. News Report (March 12, 2006), the public considers nurses as the most trusted service provider. I think this is a long overdue recognition of the role nurses play in providing high quality health care since nurses spend the most time with patients and are key to preventive health teaching." 4

5 B. Example of a partially acceptable entry: (half credit) "In our reading, nurses are considered the most trusted service provider. I agree with this position." C. Example of an unacceptable entry: (no credit) "I believe nurses should get more respect." 3. Two Reflective Essays 600 points (300 points each) Description: Reflective Essays describe the students investigation of a special topic. Essays should be 2-3 pages and include at least three (3) references with at least one (1) reference from a current journal. The essays will be evaluated according to the ability to present the topic in an understandable, clear, and coherent manner. Standard APA writing guidelines will apply. APA writing guides can be accessed from the UH Hilo Library website: 1) Essays MUST be submitted in the ASSIGNMENTS section of the course website as Microsoft Word attachments. Essays submitted elsewhere may not be credited. 2) Filenames MUST follow this format: Nurs361LastNameFirstInitial_Assignment Name. Filenames without identifying information may not be credited. Example: Nurs361MukaiC_Essay1 Deadlines with topics are as follows: Essay 1 March 8, Being a Lifelong Learner 300 points Essay 2 April 19, Exciting Nursing Jobs Requiring the BSN (or higher) 300 points 4. Two Online (Live) Chat Discussions 600 points (300 points each) March 8, from 8-9 am OR 8-9 pm 300 points April 19, from 8-9 am OR 8-9 pm 300 points Description: Participation in two live chat discussions as scheduled above. Instructions for login will be provided prior to the session. Students need to preregister for the time they wish to participate for each session. If students are absent for a chat, an additional reflective essay may be substituted by arrangement with the instructor and will be due the following week. 5. Clinical Observations 600 points The RN student will fulfill approx. 3-4 hours of clinical observation (including preparation and on- site attendance) according to contracted experiences specific to identified needs, with the intent of exposing the RN student to the expanded work of a nurse educated at the BSN level or higher. An Observational Evaluation 5

6 Feedback form will be submitted at the end of the experience (see form). Deadline: May 3, at 12 noon. Total 3000 points Grading A B C D F % ( points) 80-89% ( points) 70-79% ( points) 60-69% ( points) less than 60% (less than 1800 points) Additional requirements: Technical Requirements 1. This is an ONLINE course, therefore, students MUST have access to high-speed connectivity to the Internet (either cable modem, DSL). DO NOT use telephone dial-up as it is too slow. Internet access using a wireless air card via cell phone company may be adequate for certain types of work, but may not be adequate for all coursework needs. Please check your connectivity before proceeding with the course. 2. Students should have access to a personal computer/ laptop (preferably, with Microsoft Office program.) 3. Those without personal computers or home Internet connection must familiarize themselves with the UH campus computer labs and plan ahead to use these facilities for computer assignments since open hours may be limited. NOTE: Students who have difficulty meeting these technical expectations should discuss their situations with the instructor as soon as possible as student success is dependent on adequate access to resources. Resources and Special Instructions Use of Syllabus: This syllabus is to be construed as a contract with the student with regard to evaluation methods and grading scale. The class schedule may be subject to change. Retention of Student Papers for Evaluation Purposes: Faculty reserve the right to retain copies of graded student work to be placed in student portfolios as a method of student and program evaluation. Academic Honesty: Students are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Student Code of Conduct for UH Hilo, which can be found at I expect you to behave with integrity and hold both yourself and your peers to the highest standards of ethical behavior. Academic dishonesty encompasses, but is not limited to: (1) plagiarism (i.e., copying another individual s words or ideas without appropriately citing the source); (2) turning in assignments that somebody else has completed; (3) referring to notes or other written/electronic materials, collaborating with others, copying someone else s work, or providing answers to others in any fashion during an examination. Please note that knowledge of others cheating and failure to report this to me can also be construed as complicitness in academic dishonesty. Should I have reason to suspect that academic dishonesty has occurred, I will conduct a thorough investigation or may refer the matter to the Dean of Students for investigation. Possible sanctions should you be found responsible for academic dishonesty could include a failing grade for the course, suspension or even expulsion from the University. Such consequences could negatively affect your candidacy for graduate/professional programs or for some jobs. Advising: Advising is a very important resource designed to help students complete the requirements of the University and their individual majors. Students should consult with their advisor at least once a semester to decide on courses, check progress towards graduation, and discuss career options and other educational opportunities provided by UH-Hilo. Advising is a shared responsibility, but students have final responsibility for meeting degree requirements. Counseling Services: Counseling services are available to students who need additional support while attending the baccalaureate nursing program. Nursing faculty are available for advising with an intentional focus on preparation of nurse generalists. You are encouraged to align your career focus and full attention to the requirements needed to succeed in all of your nursing courses. Please do not hesitate to share your concerns to faculty who will maintain confidentiality. Any other concerns not in keeping with the mission of the program will be referred to the counselors at Student Services. Writing Center Services: The UH Hilo Writing Center is physically located in the UH Hilo Mookini Library, 2 nd floor, in the PC Lab. Generally, student writing tutors are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Plan accordingly for assistance well ahead of time prior to an assignment deadline if you expect to avail yourself of these services. Times and days of availability are available from the Center. Additional Writing assistance may be available at DL sites. 7
