1 CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION SYLLABUS FOR DAAC 2160, 2260 & 2360 CLINICAL - ALCOHOL/DRUG ABUSE COUNSELING A method of instruction providing detailed education, training and work-based experience and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. CREDIT 1, 2, or 3 CREDIT HOURS PREREQUISITES: CMSW 1301 & DAAC 1317 ADA STATEMENT If you require reasonable accommodations because of a physical, mental, or learning disability, please notify the instructor of this course within the first two weeks of class. LEARNING OUTCOMES In completing this course, you will: 1. Apply the theory, concepts, and skills involving specialized materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, social, and legal systems associated with the particular occupation and the business/industry. 2. Demonstrate ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, communicating in the applicable technical language of the occupation. REQUIRED MATERIALS: NONE PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING In the case of plagiarism (claiming that words and ideas of others are your own and/or not indicating the source of ideas), the instructor reserves the right to give the student a zero for the assignment. In the case of cheating during the course of a quiz or unauthorized collaboration on a writing project, the instructor reserves the right to give the student or students a zero for the quiz or assignment.

2 CLINICAL ALCOHOL/DRUG ABUSE COUNSELING - DAAC 2160, 2260, 2360 INTERNSHIP SOCIAL WORK - SCWK 2186, 2286, 2386 Spring 2009 Tuesdays 5:00 5:53 p.m. Room A110 Instructor Information Instructor: Steve Lewis Office Hours: Office: A200D Before and after class, and by appointment. Phone: Montgomery MWF 8-10am &1-2pm Home steve.r.lewis@lonestar.edu Course Information s (10 points each) 160 points s that are signed by your clinical/internship site supervisor are required for documenting the hours you complete. s for the previous week (Monday through Sunday) are due each Tuesday. The time sheets will not be returned to you so please make a copy and keep track of the hours you turn in on the proposed calendar on this syllabus. s that are not submitted on time will not receive the 10 points. You are responsible for turning in your time sheet on Tuesday even if you cannot make it to class. You may fax your time sheet to the fax number on this syllabus and turn in the original at the next class or have someone put it in the box outside my office door. If you do not work at your site in a given week, turn in a time sheet explaining why. Class Attendance/ Participation 240 points You will have the opportunity to share your accomplishments, concerns, and challenges at each class meeting. This is a critical component of your learning experience and you are expected to attend and participate in all class sessions. It is important that you tell your clinical/internship supervisor that you are not available for work during class hours. Clinical/internship activities do not constitute an excused absence from this weekly class meeting. You must meet with me personally at least once each week. Any student who is absent more than two classes this semester will be dropped. Fifty points will be deducted for each absence. The instructor reserves the right to deduct additional points for excessive tardiness and for lack of preparation for and participation in class discussion. Preparation and participation in this class includes: 1. coming to class prepared to discuss the topic identified in the proposed calendar 2. openly sharing with the class your feelings about your performance in your clinical/internship 3. using active listening skills when classmates are sharing their feelings

3 4. sharing information about your agency 5. using active listening skills when classmates share information 6. accepting praise and constructive criticism 7. giving praise and constructive criticism 8. sharing with students struggling with an issue how you ve overcome similar situations 9. respecting the confidentiality of each member of the class You can expect the full 240 points for class participation/attendance if you attend class regularly, arrive on time, and participate in class discussions and activities. Portfolio 200 points You will maintain a portfolio throughout the semester that you will turn in on the listed day of class. Late portfolios will NOT be accepted. The portfolio should be well organized and include the following: A. A sample resume that you will use to apply for a position. The resume should include your recent clinical or internship experience. B. Information on your agency that includes: 1. Agency mission statement (typed on one page) 2. General information about your agency (typed on one page) 3. Confidentiality statement/form or typewritten explanation as to why there is none 4. Agency job descriptions (minimum of 3 human service position job descriptions) 5. Job description that you write for your position (typed using agency format) 6. Notes from 3 career information interviews with agency employees (typed) 7. Supervisor evaluation form signed by you and your site supervisor C. Related reading to include: 1. Annotated bibliography of all books and articles you ve read related to your work at the internship/clinical site. The minimum is five; two books and three peer reviewed articles. Copies of the articles must be placed in your portfolio. Supervisor Evaluations 400 points (2@200pts each) Your clinical/internship site supervisor will complete an evaluation of your performance. You will be rated on your skills, professionalism, dependability, cooperation, flexibility, willingness to learn, judgment on the job, and other factors listed on the Supervisor Evaluation Form. Grades s 160 points A = points Class Participation 240 B = Portfolio 200 C = Supervisor Evaluations 400 D = TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE 1000 F = 0-599

4 Student Responsibilities In addition to the coursework listed above, you are responsible for completing 272 hours of approved clinical/internship activity over the course of the semester. ****** Finding and maintaining a placement site is your responsibility. ****** Insurance must be paid before accruing any hours at the placement site. If you have not found a placement site by midterm or accrued the necessary hours by April 8th it is your responsibility to drop the class or risk a failing grade. You should plan on arriving to work on time, staying for the entire time scheduled, and dressing in a manner appropriate for the agency. Remember that you are making an impression on your supervisor and co-workers that could lead to a job in the future. You are also representing Lone Star College and the Human Services Program.
