2 VANGUARD UNIVERSITY BSN PROGRAM Course Number: Faculty: NURS 310: Information Technology in Nursing TBD Contact Information: TBD Class Days/Times: Units: Pre-requisite: One night per week, 6-10PM 4 units Admission to BSN program COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will be introduced to computer applications in nursing and health care. They will develop computer literacy skills in the areas of information processing, computer technology, and issues related to privacy and confidentiality. Students are expected to share their findings with class members in presentation format. Computer laboratory experience will include an investigation of computer applications within nursing, focusing specifically on their use in nursing administration, research, clinical practice and education. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: Become competent in the area of computer literacy including: hardware & software Gain familiarity in computer applications including word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation software Conduct library and internet searches for research findings Learn to analyze web-based health content for accuracy and credibility of information Develop research writing proficiency, publication ethics as well as presentation skills Define terms frequently used in the field of nursing technology 2

3 Understand the development and maintenance of health information systems Discuss ethical issues related to privacy and confidentiality Recognize critical research, clinical practice and education of nursing technology Become acquainted with technology related to nursing practice AACN/CCNE VALUES AND COMPETENCIES Essential IV Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology 1. Demonstrate skills in using patient care technologies, information systems, and communication devises that support safe nursing practice. 2. Evaluate data from all relevant sources, including technology, to inform the delivery of care. 3. Uphold ethical standards related to data security, regulatory requirements, confidentiality, and clients right to privacy. QUALITY AND SAFETY EDUCATION FOR NURSES (QSEN) COMPETENCIES Evidence-based Practice 1. Base individualized care plan on patient values, clinical expertise, and evidence. 2. Locate evidence reports related to clinical practice topics and guidelines. 3. Question rationale for routine approaches to care that result in less-than-desired outcomes or adverse events. 4 COURSE POLICIES Attendance and Tardy Policy You must be at class on time and remain present until dismissed. Class attendance is necessary in order to complete the course. The School for Professional Studies relies on the dynamics of class interaction and group processing in order to integrate and apply the learning of academic content. This model also emphasizes the development and practice of interpersonal communication skills and teamwork (e.g., group problem solving and negotiation). The format therefore necessitates class attendance. In practical terms, one course session is equivalent to three weeks of traditional semester course work. Due to the concentrated scheduling and the emphasis upon participatory learning, students need to be in attendance every week. Students who miss more than one class meeting (or more than five class hours) in any given course will automatically receive a failing grade and need to retake the course to obtain a passing grade. If an instructor deems that a student s second absence was under extremely unavoidable and unusual circumstances (i.e., an auto accident), the professor may file an academic petition on behalf of the student to the Dean of SPS. If the academic petition is approved, the instructor may give the student a W (Withdrawal) grade in place of a failing grade. The student will still be required to retake the course. Students who arrive late disturb the class. Students who arrive late will not receive participation points for the unit covered. Students who are habitually late may be asked to withdraw from the course. Degree Requirements Students must achieve a minimum grade of C for all major course requirements. Any major course in which the student receives a grade below C must be retaken. Class Participation Students must be prepared and participate in all discussions. Criterion: Is the student engaged in classroom discussions? Does the student demonstrate an ability to handle assigned material with a degree of proficiency? (e.g., ask questions and participate in dialog consistently, and in a manner that reflects familiarity with the assigned material). Participation evaluated according to quality, not quantity, of participation. Attendance will be scored, and no participation points will be awarded if the student is absent from class. Late Paper Policy You are responsible for submitting assignments on time (by 6:00 pm). Unless authorized by the Professor in advance, no credit will be given for assignments not turned in when due. 4

5 Academic Dishonesty Work submitted for assessment purposes must be the independent work of the student concerned. Plagiarism, or copying and use of another s work without proper acknowledgment, is not permitted. Nor is it permissible for any former or present student to allow another student to refer to, use as a sample, or in any way copy or review their work. If a student needs guidance, he or she must seek the Professor s assistance. Laptop Policy As a key objective of this course is building proficiency and confidence in utilizing information technology, laptops in the classroom will be an integral part of selected classroom work and exercises. In addition, laptops can also be a barrier to the learning process since technology on the screen can easily distract from discussion in the classroom. In order to provide for the best learning environment, the instructor will announce when it is appropriate to use laptops in the classrooms for in-class activities and exercises so please bring your laptop to each class. However, outside of these times, it is standing policy in the class that laptops are not to be used at other times. 5

6 Policy for Assignment Deadlines and Late Work Unless otherwise announced by the instructor, all weekly assignments are due at 5:00 p.m. on the day your class meets. Please note that unexpected technical issues or absences do not excuse late submissions. To allow for unforeseen technical issues, you are advised to submit assignments in advance of the deadline. The Moodle site will not accept submissions after 5:00 p.m. No late work is accepted for this course and assignments not submitted by the deadline will receive zero points.
