1 Baytown Chamber of Commerce Partners In Education Newsletter The Exchange CARDS FOR TROOPS TROOPS 76,000 DELIVERED - JOB WELL DONE Merry Christmas To our Troops! The Baytown Chamber of Commerce Partners in Education Program in conjunction with local service organizations, area businesses & City of Baytown employees have collected over 76,000 Christmas greetings for our American service men and women bravely serving our country. Executive Vice President Rikki Wheeler challenged the Partners in Education participants for the fifth year to see which elementary, junior high and high school, along with their business/organization partner could collect or make the most Christmas cards for the service men and women. For the forth year in a row, the winner of the Most Collected Cards for the Elementary level went to Alamo Elementary with their partner s assistance- Kiwanis Club, with 7,900 cards delivered. The Junior High winner went to Horace Mann Jr. with their partner, SNC Lavalin helping the cause with a total of 31,525 cards. And the High School winner for a third year in a row also, Ross S. Sterling with a considerable contribution from their Partner In Education, Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital, their total cards donated equaled 20,118. The three schools brought in a total of 78% of the total collection of all the cards delivered this year. This year, Highlands Elementary was awarded the Most Original Trophy. This is not awarded annually, only when someone goes above and aboard and can not achieve the most collected status. Highlands Elementary researched the items that were able to be shipped to our military men and women, whether snack items, toothbrushes, toiletry items, small game items, candy, etc. They sent those items along with their handmade Christmas cards to bring a little cheer to a soldier far away from home this holiday season. Congressman Ted Poe scheduled a trophy presentation time that didn t fit with the Principal schedules prior to the Holiday break and we have not been about to schedule a time since to present the trophies with him. Therefore, we will present the trophies at the January PIE Meeting to the schools. The troops always look forward to receiving a message from the States, especially the State of Texas and especially at Christmas. Thank you for your efforts and we look forward to participating in the 2015 Cards For Troops Program with Congressman Poe. It s never too early to get started. 2 Highlands Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce and B.P. Hopper Primary The Highlands Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce has embraced the staff and students at B. P. Hopper Primary with continued support. The year began with HLCC volunteers preparing a wonderful breakfast buffet for the teachers at Hopper. In addition, staff members were treated with a bag full of goodies. The instructional year started off with the Chamber supplying the students with daily behavior folders imprinted with our GCCISD calendar. The Highlands Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce has committed to supporting our Grasshopper Rallies every four weeks. The Chamber purchased dog tags entitled Outstanding Citizen that are given to the students who are spotlighted during this event. Students attendance is crucial for their learning and to help encourage students to be present every day, the HLLC provides B. P. Hopper with six $10.00 gift cards every six weeks. In addition, our partner in education contributed to our 3rd Annual Watch D.O.G.S kickoff event by providing us with 300 bottles of water. October brought the Highlands Volunteer Fire Department and their truck for an all-day rotation of fire safety training for National Fire Prevention Week. The last week of October, B. P. Hopper Primary celebrated Red Ribbon Week with daily themes. The Chamber supplied themed wrist bands and stickers for the students to wear on their shirts that helped them to remember to Pledge to be Drug Free. Furthermore, the HLCC gratefully donated 4 gifts that were used in a drawing at our Fall Family Reading and Writing Night. The most treasured collaboration, the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, kicked off at the beginning of November. Students at Hopper brought nonperishable items as part of the Thanksgiving baskets to be provided to 30 of our Hopper families. The students put the finishing touches on this event by decorating boxes to hold the meals in the spirit of a thankful season. Together, B. P. Hopper Primary and the Highlands Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce will continue our efforts with one common purpose in mind, students success! Stuart Career Center The Stuart Career students and staff have enjoyed working with our Partners In Education so far this school year! Our partners have provided support for us by attending some our advisory meetings, by providing camouflage bracelets for Red Ribbon week. Our students participated in Cards for Troops for the first time and our students did an excellent job of showing creativity in making their cards! We will be sponsoring a food can drive next week for the Thanksgiving holiday as well! We would like to thank all our partners for their help and support.

3 ExxonMobil Research & Engineering and Cedar Bayou Junior School The partnership between ExxonMobil Research & Engineering (EMRE) and Cedar Bayou Junior School (CBJS) began in September 1989, making this our 25 th successful year. During the school year, EMRE employees, as well as Cedar Bayou students and staff members enjoyed many benefits of a flourishing partnership. The partnership also provided EMRE employees an opportunity to give back to the surrounding community by volunteering at the CBJS. This fall, ExxonMobil purchased student planners for all Cedar Bayou students. The planners have helped the students become more organized, efficient and better prepared in the classroom. The Cedar Bayou teachers are working with all students to continue making the planners an effective tool. An added bonus from our partners at EMRE is their donations of school supplies for our students and staff. The whole campus benefited from the donated paper, pens, binders and notebooks. By providing supplies we are working together to ensure that each teacher and student have the necessary supplies to be successful at school. In addition, the ExxonMobil office is continuing the campaign to collect box tops for Box Tops for Education to help raise money for the school. In a continuing tradition, ExxonMobil led the efforts with the Adopt-A-Family program for this Holiday season. Family information was obtained through Cedar Bayou s Communities in Schools program. A Giving Tree was set up at ExxonMobil allowing employees to select specific items to purchase. Exxon- Mobil employees helped three families by collecting gifts and donations to purchase specific items. Each family received a holiday dinner, clothing, and special wishes. Hope for the holidays were truly delivered to these CBJ families. In review, the fall of the school year was a successful coordination of activities between both ExxonMobil Research and Engineering and Cedar Bayou Junior School. This valuable partnership involved 100+ volunteer hours, $4000 stewarded through the PIE relationship. The school year will serve as a model for years to come. LCY Elastomers and Harlem Elementary LCY Elastomers graciously provided our entire Harlem Elementary staff with a Back to School Breakfast catered by Aramark!! A weekly magazine (Studies Weekly) for young students of Science and Social Studies is provided to our Harlem Elementary students. The Social Studies magazine is provided to our 4 th grade students and the Science magazine is provided to our 5th grade students by LCY Elastomers!!! The magazine also includes FUN vocabulary and word games!! Our Harlem Elementary students were provided DRUG FREE! necklaces for Red Ribbon Week. Volume 25, Issue 1 Page 3

4 Legacy Community Health Services and Point Alternative School For its third year in a row, Legacy Community Health Services has partnered with the Point Alternative School. Legacy is a non-profit, Federal Qualified Health Care facility, providing healthcare to those in need, regardless of the ability to pay. This year Legacy Therapist, Laura Almore, has been meeting with groups of student from the Point twice a month, to provide Behavioral Health education, discussing topics such as choices, respect, and substance abuse. The students look forward to the education classes and meeting with Ms. Almore. Legacy and the Point have also teamed up in the Cards for Troops project. The staff of the Point have also been treated to breakfast and goodies by Legacy, and are recognized for all of their hard work. This year is off to a great start with many activities planned for students and staff. Drug-free themed bracelets were provided to all students during Red Ribbon Week. Also, our Partner in Education sponsored three of our students families for Thanksgiving. They provided entire meals and delivered the items to the homes. In addition, they sponsored five of our families for Christmas. Finally, Community Toyota*Honda*KIA supported and encouraged our staff by providing everyone with delicious apples. 5 Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital and Ross S. Sterling and Chinquapin Preparatory School The school year has provided Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital with two Partners in Education. Along, with Houston Methodist San Jacinto s long standing partnership with Ross S. Sterling High School, we are now Partners in Education with Chinquapin Preparatory School. Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital looks forward to many more years with both schools and feels blessed by these two partnerships! HMSH hospital provided UIL Academic t-shirts for Sterling. Also, HMSJ delivered Kiwanis apples to Sterling teachers and placed in the lounge area for all teachers and staff to enjoy. Drug Free Wristbands were provided for both Sterling High School and Chinquapin Preparatory School students in their school colors with the slogan Hugs not Drugs for them to enjoy and be reminded of leading a drug free life for GCCISD s annual drug free campaign. Sterling High School Pals will be providing Thanksgiving cards to be placed on the patient s lunch trays at both Houston Methodist San Jacinto campuses, to brighten their Thanksgiving Day. With the Christmas Season on the way, we look forward to the Sterling Swing Choir in December to provide the patients with some Christmas caroling, as they have done so over the past few years. The patients love the sounds of Christmas as they carol through our patient s halls. Houston Methodist Hospital San Jacinto donated 20 Houston Texans tickets for both Sterling High School and Chinquapin Preparatory School. Each school will receive 20 tickets, 4 parking passes and each student will also receive a t-shirt. Both schools can designate the tickets to those students through incentive programs they have chosen. Houston Methodist has also provided Football shirts for the GCCISD trainers and coaches during Pink-Out Week, in support of Breast Cancer awareness. Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital supported Sterling, Goose Creek Memorial and Lee High School s Football teams in ads and posters along with the Robert E. Lee cheerleaders, also contributing to the RSS and GCM Band Boosters and Sterling Stars. Our Partners worked diligently in our annual Christmas card drive for the troops and together, with the support of many in the Baytown area. Ross Sterling High School brought in over 5,000 cards and Chinquapin Preparatory School also helped with this endeavor, working together, this project brought in 20,118 cards this year! This is always a wonderful act of kindness in support for our Military Personnel away from their homes and families during the Christmas Season! 6 Chevron Phillips/Advanced Aromatics and Goose Creek Memorial H.S..Goose Creek Memorial High School started a new year with a new plan with our Partners in Education. Both partners are excited to assist when possible, whether it be with food items for different events like Freshman Orientation or a faculty luncheon. Our biggest change this year is starting a partnership with our Career & Technical Education Business, Logistics and Tourism Academy and Chevron-Phillips. Through our partnership we plan to brand the academy, order shirts for our academy students that will be part of our dress code when we attend functions. We are planning activities to attend with the Chevron-Phillips headquarters in the Woodlands and learn more about the global aspect of their operation. At the same time we are going to be able to attend a Junior Achievement Financial Literacy seminar. Through Chevron Phillips we are hosting speakers each month to talk with our Academy students about their career interests and what it means to be a global company. Students find their conversations insightful and enjoy the questions that they are able to have answered. Soon, we will be attending a Women in STEM seminar with Chevron-Phillips. Additionally, as we are preparing our seniors to apply to college we are hosting an essay writing workshop for students and enticing them to attend by presenting them with t-shirts, sponsored by both Advanced Aromatics and Chevron-Phillips. We are also rewarding our seniors that apply to college, technical school, or the military and bring us a copy of their acceptance letter, with prizes offered to us by Advanced Aromatics. Advanced Aromatics is also sponsoring our UIL Academic team shirts for the upcoming UIL Academic contest season. Goose Creek Memorial is excited about the partnerships we have with Chevron- Phillips and Advanced Aromatics and want to thank them for their continued support. Solvay and Carver Elementary Our business partner, Solvay has supported Carver Elementary with prizes for our Scavenger Hunt Family Night, pumpkins for our character project & with Carver Spirit shirts for all of our students!!! Solvay has provided our students with many needed school supplies & teachers with goody bags. Solvay has donated two bicycles for Perfect Attendance for the school year. THANK YOU SOLVAY!!! 7 Community Resource Credit Union and Lamar Elementary To kick off the new school year, CRCU s entire staff got involved by holding a school supply drive for the students of Lamar Elementary. Lamar Elementary is proud to continue their new volunteer program on campus, Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students), and CRCU was thrilled to be a part of the kick off meeting, serving dinner to all the families who came out. During Red Ribbon Week, CRCU donated red wristbands for the students and teachers of Lamar and the staff at CRCU to wear during Red Ribbon Week. CRCU was also happy to donate t-shirts for GCCISD s new antibullying campaign. During College and Career Week, CRCU gave the students a fun challenge the classroom that was voted Best Dressed (the class that best depicted what they wanted to be when they grow up) would win a pizza party and a field trip to tour CRCU branch! CRCU representatives also took a few minutes to tell the students about the career opportunities available at the credit union. To encourage attendance from the students, CRCU continues to give Toys R Us gift cards to students with perfect attendance every six weeks. Lunch Buddies has begun and CRCU has a record number of volunteers coming to eat lunch with a group of special 2 nd graders. Holidays are just around the corner, and CRCU is full swing, preparing for their annual P.I.E. Thanksgiving Food Drive and Christmas Gift Drive! It looks to be another wonderful school year, with a partnership stronger than ever! Baytown Rotary and De Zavala Elementary De Zavala Elementary and the Rotary Club of Baytown have partnered up for another successful year through the Baytown Chamber of Commerce. Our PIE has provided gift cards for perfect attendance for students. On top of this, teacher appreciation gift cards have also been given for various incentives throughout the school year. Red Ribbon Week was like Christmas every day for our students and staff. Everyone on the entire campus received a daily gift, such as stickers, dog tag necklaces, mustaches, wristbands, tattoos and even ribbons. This is just the tip of the iceberg. The rest of the year will be filled with wonderful treats to help our campus in numerous ways. Thank you for everything Baytown Rotary. Volume 25, Issue 1 Page 7

8 Baytown GMC Buick and James Bowie Elementary James Bowie Elementary is so proud and thankful for having Baytown GMC Buick as our Partners in Education for the school year. In August, Scott Tibbits, General Manager and Albert Luna, Community Liaison along with the Bowie administrative team met to plan and organize events for the year. Our partner brought lunch from Chick fil-a for our staff in celebration of our back to school week. At this time, they were introduced to the staff and assisted with passing out information. During Red Ribbon Week, they purchased ribbons, stickers, pencils and mustaches to fit our theme of we mustache you not to do drugs. Mr. Luna serves on our Campus ILT and Olweus Bullying Prevention Committee as well. During Thanksgiving, Baytown Buick-GMC provided 50 turkeys to our most needy families. Mr. Luna dressed as Santa and took pictures with all of our Bowie students. Our partner also donated a Santa picture to each student. Also, Baytown GMC Buick along with other sponsors assisted 45 families with Christmas gifts and cards. To date, we have collaborated over 45 hours of time to ensure student success. This is our first year working together and are looking forward to even more good things as the year progresses! Woodforest National Bank and Banuelos Elementary Woodforest National Bank is in their first year of being a Chamber PIE representative. Woodforest has supported the teachers through back to school door prizes, gifts, and lunch. We have also donated red ribbons for Red Ribbon Week, gifts for perfect attendance, three Barkley visits to help support and encourage the campus, and a Christmas Tree for the kids to enjoy during Christmas. We have spent time helping the school with their literacy library, science lab, and working with first graders on Junior Achievement, a financial literacy class geared toward any grade level. Woodforest also enjoyed helping the kids make over 300 cards for the Troops and participating in a food drive to feed families on campus for Thanksgiving! We have also worked with the school every Wednesday on its Bulldog Bank! The Bulldog bank teaches the students about financial jobs, savings, and real life money situations. Woodforest has loved being involved with the Banuelos Bulldogs and we can't wait to see what the rest of the school year has in store! Page Volume 8 25, Issue 1 Page 8 The Exchange
