2 Volume 9, Issue 1 Page 2 Best Practice for the Month of January Crisfield Academy and High School Best Practices for the Month of January School: Address: Crisfield Academy and High School 210 North Somerset Avenue Crisfield, MD Phone: Contact: Mr. James Conrow, Principal - jconrow@somerset.k12.md.us Character Ed. Contact Lynne Brumley and Mr. Gray Title of Best Practice: Students Against Destructive Decisions Primary Principles Emphasized: 2, 5, and 7 Principle 2 Defines Character Comprehensively to include thinking, feeling, and doing. Crisfield Academy High School (CAHS) is a small rural 8 th 12 th grade school located in Somerset County. The student population is approximately 350 students. In October 2012 Hurricane Sandy devastated Crisfield, and many of the students and community still feel it s effect. In January of 2013 the school nurse brought to CAHS SADD: Students Against Destructive Decisions. This group created several initiatives that promoted good character throughout the school and community. Through No Cuss, No Fuss Initiative, the school wide pledge to refrain from using bad language by: replacing bad words/gestures with non-offensive words! Keeping my cool when I get angry! Encouraging my friends to not use foul language/gestures! Respecting the rights of others! By liking myself! Along with taking the pledge students received No Cuss, No Fuss! Wrist bands to remind themselves and others to be mindful through the school year. Principle 5 The school provides students with opportunities for moral action. Through Costly Distractions Initiative, students created a video for NOYS/Allstate Act Out Loud done in partnership with the Crisfield Police Department. Students created a video showing the cost of making bad decisions and driving. The video included members of the community from Judges and other law officials to students at CAHS. The video was shared with community in a red carpet style event. Then it was shown to students at CAHS as well as other schools in the county. There have been request for the video as far away as Hawaii.
3 Volume 9, Issue 1 Page 3 Principle 7 The students are prompted to increase self-motivation and prevent bullying. Through Anti-Bullying Event students are prompted to prevent bullying at CAHS. All students were required through the schools English Department to write an essay on how Bullying impacted their personal life. As a reward the students were given an entry ticket into the movie A Walk to Remember. Crisfield Academy & High School s SADD Chapter Video This video was done for a contest that the Crisfield Academy & High School's SADD Chapter did in partnership with the Crisfield Police Department entered. The contest is called Act Out Loud and it is sponsored by NOYS and Allstate. NOYS stands for the National Organization of Youth Safety! Our video..."costly Distractions"...will hopefully teach the dangers of peer pressure, underage drinking, driving under the influence and the use of a cellular device while behind the wheel. Our students feel it is there responsibility to provide the outreach necessary to teach kids about the dangers of destructive decisions...and the outcome of such "Costly Distractions!" 5 Volume 9, Issue 1 Page 5 Will it bring a smile? As a new year begins and we settle down in our routines, let us all reflect on what the new year will bring. Will it bring smiles to someone s face because we did a kind deed? Taking out the trash without being told. Helping a neighbor by clearing their sidewalk. Opening the door for someone. Putting a little note in a packed lunch. These are all small things that will put a smile on someone s face. I would like to hear from your students as to what they could do to make someone smile. Please send me their ideas and I will include them in my next newsletter and on our website. Include your school s name, county, grade, and the student s name. I look forward to hearing from you.
