2 Brand/Logo Stevens Worldwide Van Lines it got its start in Saginaw, MI back in 1905, and has continued under leadership of the same family for its entire history. Today they have over 150 agent locations, and are considered a leader in the moving and storage industry across the United States and around the world. The company performs local moves, long-distance moves, and international moves, and they offer storage options for all types of moves. Stevens is The Way to Move through our commitment to be the industry leader in providing quality driven consumer and corporate relocation services with quantifiable results. The app will be used by people who are going to be moving. More specifically, much of Stevens Van Lines business comes from people who are older in age or pataking in a miliary move. Stevens Van Lines sees this app as something most people will only use once in their life. 3
3 RESEARCH AND MARKETABILITY 4 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines 5
4 Interviews As part of my research process for the creation of the Stevens moving app, I conducted several interviews with people who have previoulsy moved before. I mainly learned from my interviews that most people wouldn t log every item into an app so they can track contents of their boxes during a move. After conducting these interviews, I decided to add a page with money saving tips and information on how to research a new neighborhood. Other Moving Apps There are already other apps currently available that were created to aid people in the process of moving. However, while some of these contain aspects that are going to be included in the Stevens Van Lines app, none of them contain all the aspects. Also, several of the apps have flaws and shortcomings, so there s a great opportunity for the Stevens Van Lines app to improve on and accomplish the things the other apps couldn t fulfill. Katrina s Interview Katrina is in her mid-twenties, is going to be married this summer, and has a full time job at University of Michigan-Flint. She describes her personal experience of moving into her first house. Aside from the social aspect, she felt that dealing with the up-front costs and having to rediscover her local area; such as restaurants, shopping centers/grocery stores, and radio stations; were among the most difficult aspects of moving. She also added that getting utilities, Internet, and cable set up at a new home were a burden. Katrina s primary concern with moving was making sure she got everything unpacked in a timely manner. To be prepared to move, she said that you need to ask for boxes, prepare fragile objects, and asks others for help. During the process of moving, she forgot to make room for certain pieces of furniture and ended up having to list them on Craigslist and make a stop at a thrift store. She feels that an app to aid in the process of moving would be most helpful if it was set up in the style of Craigslist, but for specific things pertaining to moving. For instance, she feels people could list if they have trucks for rent and if people have free boxes and packing materials. Katrina didn t feel that an app with the feature to track a box s contents would necessarily get much use. She pointed out that people who are organized already write the contents on the outside of the box, and unorganized people wouldn t bother to use the app. Katrina says that she wouldn t use an app for labeling templates because her apps are on her phone and she doesn t have a Bluetooth printer. Brittany s Interview Brittany is in her early twenties, is still going to college, and is engaged. She describes her recent moving experience that she partook in with her fiancé. She felt the most difficult part of her moving experience was keeping track of what they had versus what they needed. Her primary concern with moving was how expensive the move could get. To prepare to move, they had to find a place to live, figure out if they could afford it, and then they had to worry about packing everything up. When asked about what she forgot during the move, she said that she forgot to pack a lot of stuff. She said that you forgot how much that you have until you pack it all. She felt that the most important features that would be in an app to help you move would be a list of money saving tips, a list of the average stuff that goes in each room of a house so you can see if you have it or need to get it, and an invitation that could be generated to get some of your friends to help with the process. She felt that just writing on the box would be more helpful than having your app keep track of boxes contents. Brittany said they did use labels and that a label template could be helpful. She felt that they would specially be nice if they had some icons and cute designs. Moving Guru Moving Guru is an app put out by the moving company Suddath. The main screen allows the user to choose whether they are partaking in a domestic move, an international move, or a government move. Once the user has selected which type of move they are going to make, the app ttakes them to a page with multiple tabs displaying the features of the app. The app is fairly simple and easy to navigate. The image theme of the app is boxes, and the main color scheme is orange and blue; the company s logo colors; as well as white, gray, and black. This app is nice because it alows user to add checklist items to their phone s calendar. Moving List From the app overview page on itunes, it s clear that this $2.99 app does much less than Suddath s free app. It has a to-do list, but unlike Moving Guru, it doesn t appear that this app will allow users to import items into their phone calendar. While it s lacking this capability, the to-do list does seem a little more advanced than the one in the Moving Guru app. This one allows the user to oraganize tasks into categories. The color scheme of this app is mainly blue, white, gray, and black. The main tab page is nice because each to-do list category has it s own special icon and color. FEATURES: Request a moving estimate Utilize a moving checklist that is broken down by weeks till the moving date. It also allows the user to add items from this checklist to their phone s calendar. Tips on how to select a mover Packing tips; this takes the user to a page of YouTube videos created specially by Suddath on how to go about packing certain rooms of a house. Send a we ve moved notification Glossary of moving terminology Track Your Shipment The app also has specialized information when using the international move or government move sides of the app. FEATURES: To-Do List task items to get the user prepared for a move Allows you to add your own items to the list Edit and track existing items Organize tasks by category or due date Also includes Packing Decider as a bonus feature to help the user make crucial packing decisions. It works sort of like a magic eight ball, and when the user shakes their phone, it will tell them what to do with an item. CUSTOMER REVIEWS: It is what is says it is, it s a checklist for moving. Simply put, no saving move date, no saved address, just a checklist. For the reviewers that were expecting more, read the description. 6 Stevens New App The purpose of Stevens new app, Moving Box, is to help people with the process of moving while creating awareness of their brand. Some of the app s features are free for the everyday user, while some of them will only be accessible if they are moving with Steven s Worldwide Van Lines. MAIN FEATURES: The features of this app are the Moving Checklist, Moving Tips, and the Move Estimator. The Moving Checklist provides the user with a 12 week countdown to their moving date and a set of tasks they should accomplish before this date. Moving Tips are various suggestions and tips that will aid users with their moves. The Move Estimator tries to convert app users to Steven s customers. SECONDARY FEATURES: The secondary features is the Move Coordinator info, the Driver info page, the Truck Tracker, a Claims and Damages form, and the survey. THOUGHT PROCESS: The thought process for someone using this app is that they are moving and could use moving tips, or could utilze a checklist guiding the user through the weeks leading up to their move. If they need assistance with their move, they re thought process is hopefully that they are going to use Stevens Worldwide Van Lines to aid them with their move, and thus use all the features of the Stevens specific side of the app. App Colors When selecting a color scheme for the app, I knew the app needed to primarily focus on the colors that can be found in the Stevens Worldwide Van Lines logo. For this app, those three colors have been titled Stevens Blue, Van Line Gray, and Global Green. In addition to these three colors, I have selected a few other colors that compliment these; black, white, and two other shades of gray. They will also hopefully lead to name recognition of the Stevens Worldwide Van Lines brand. 10 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines 11
7 Navigation Model Creating a navigation model helped to figure out the best way to design the Steven s Worldwide Van Lines app. It was a quick and easy way to determine whether there would be any navigational problems with the design, before moving on to the more in depth prototype stage. Prototype Study After I had mocked up a prototype of the app on paper, I conducted a prototype study with another student in the class. The usability testing of the app s prototpye was successful and it was determined that there were no major navigational problems. I was given a couple of minor suggestions that I would later add in during the rendering stage of the app. 12 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines 13
8 Typeface Systems The Stevens Worldwide Van Lines moving app needed to visually look professional and modern, as well as capture the essence of moving. The fonts I chose reflect this desired appearance. TITLE Helvetica Neue, LT Std, 47 Light Condensed Heading American Typewriter, Regular Subheading Helvetica Neue, Regular Navbar Page Title Helvetica Neue, Light Status Helvetica Neue, Light Italic Button Text Helvetica Neue, Ultra Light Logo/App Icon The logo/app icon needed to capture the essence of Stevens Worldwide Van Lines. Since their logo is such a big part of their brand, I knew I needed to incorporate aspects of it in this design. I also needed to tie this app icon to the app itself. To achieve all of these things, I used the Steven s globe, a Stevens S, and I made the background the same shade of blue that is used on many of the app s pages. 9 Icons in the App The icons created for this app are simple and sophisticated. They need to represent and tie in the aspects of moving, but they need to do so in a way that portrays the professionalism of the Stevens Worldwide Van Lines brand. Unity is created between the designs through similiar sizes and line weight, as well as common color scheme. Main Icons: The main icons of the app are the ones used on the home screen for the links to the three main sections of the app; Moving Checklist, Moving Tips, and Planning a Move. Sub Icons: The sub icons in this app can be found in several places. There s a calendar icon utilized throughout the Moving Checklist. There s two forms of a box used with the Packing Tips accordion style tab located in Moving Tips. When the tab is in its closed state, it shows the closed version of a box. When the tab is expanded, it shows an open version of the box. The Truck Tracker displays a Stevens moving truck icon. DESIGNING AN APP FOR STEVENS 16 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines
10 Home Screen The home screen gives you access to the three main sections of the app; the Moving Checklist, Moving Tips, and Planning a Move. The Moving Checklist is a list of tasks to accomplish before your moving day. Moving Tips are various tips and resources that will aid users through the move process. Planning a Move is the Stevens Worldwide Van Lines side of the app. This is for Stevens customers or potential customers. Moving Tips Moving Tips is another one of the three main categories within the app. This section is all about helping people prepare for their move. There s information about how to safely pack items, what not to bring and good ways to get rid of the stuff you re not taking with you, a link for ordering packing supplies, information on how to research a new area, and money saving tips. Packing Tips The packing tips bar is an expandable list, that once expanded, gives you links to other pages and websites. DESIGNING AN APP FOR STEVENS Settings If you tap the gear on the Home screen, you ll be taken to a settings page that will allow you to control the notifications you receive from the app. 18 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines 19
11 Moving Tips Moving Checklist The Moving Checklist is the main feature for casual users of the app. It provides them with a 12 week checklist, that they can follow leading up to their move. Users can check off completed items and can even add items. Search Feature Tap this icon to search your Moving Checklist. Add an Item Tap the + to add an item to your Moving Checklist. Scrollable Page This page is scrollable. Show Now This link takes you to the Steven s website for order moving supplies. Check Off Items It s really easy to check off the items you ve completed. Once they re checked off they, they gray out. Any item can be unchecked if the user mistakenly checked it off. Sync to iphone Tap the calendar icon to add an item to your phone s calendar. 20 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines 21
12 Logging In To access the Stevens side of the app, Planning a Move, the user will first need to log in. If they re new to the app, they ll have to create a free account. Once they ve done this, they ll be logged in. Planning a Move Once you ve logged in with your Stevens account, you can now access Planning a Move, the third and final main section of the app. Planning a Move is for people who are going to be moving with Stevens Worldwide Van Lines, or at least thinking about it. If they haven t committed to moving with Stevens yet, or have yet to fill out the free estimate form, they will see this version of the Planning a Move screen. Settings If you tap the gear on the Planning a Move page, you ll be taken to a settings page that will allow you to log out of your Stevens account. Move Estimate Another link to the Move Estimate form. This one is conveniently located in the user s tap zone. 22 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines 23
13 Move Estimate Form The Move Estimate Form is the most important feature on the Steven s side of the app. While a user filling out this form doesn t necessarily guarantee that they ll be using Steven s Worldwide Van Lines when they move, it does certainly get them talking with the company and moves them one step closer. Personalize Titles Users can personalize room titles so they can keep track of their rooms easier. Edit a Room Users can easily make changes or add items to their rooms. Save for Later Save your progress at any point while filling out the Move Estimate Form, and return later. Pull Down List Choose from a list of items, or select Other to type in the name of an unlisted item. Save vs Delete The Save Room button is located in the tap zone while the Delete Room button is safely located at the top of the screen. When you tap the Delete Room button, it will ask you if you are sure that you want to delete it. Delete Items Tap the X to remove any unwanted items from the room. 24 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines
14 Moving Day Info Truck Tracker The truck tracker page will reassure customers that their items are in route to their new home. Even though customers can t geographically track their truck, they can still see whether it is on time or not and how many days remain until their delivery day. Driver Info Having information about the person that will be picking up and delivering your stuff to your new home will make customers feel more comfortable and relaxed on moving day. Plus, if someone is there that shouldn t be, they can easily call their driver s supervisor. 26 Stevens Worldwide Van Lines
15 The App s Success This app is successful in helping people get ready and prepared for a move. The design is modern looking and matches the look of ios7. Using the Stevens Worldwide Van Lines color scheme was a good choice as it reinforces their brand in the users mind.
