6 6 Why get a website? While you re working hard to get your business going, wouldn t it be great if you could be in lots of different places at once? Well, with a website you can. While you re occupied with stocks and suppliers, new customers can still find out about your company, view your products, you, and place orders through your website. It s also an effective way for potential customers to find you. Give customers the bigger picture You can display much more information about your business than in a press advert or directory listing for example your price list, details of your credentials and experience, and full contact details. Always be available Whatever your hours of work, a website will always be there, providing potential customers with information about your business. 7 7 Getting started We can t all be computer whizzes, but we can all have a website up and running in a matter of minutes. With just a few clicks, our website wizard will build you a unique business site, and our helpful advisors are always on call if you need any further assistance. 6 steps to web success The process of creating your new website will take about 20 minutes. Before you get going, it s a good idea to have the following prepared: Get your business online for free The full name and address of your business Your contact details A UK mobile phone number we will activate your website via a text message code An overview of your business we recommend a couple of paragraphs describing what your business offers and what makes it unique A couple of pictures that show off your products or services pictures will make your website more interesting GOL412_GBBO brochure_aw5.indd 7 10/2/10 10:10:07

8 8 Create your website Step 1: Choose your web address Enter a name for your website in the space provided. This is the address people will use to find you on the Internet, so it s a good idea to try a full or abbreviated version of your company name. Click search and, if the name is available, click the corresponding select button to reserve it. Step 3: Enter your business details When asked, fill out your business details in the boxes provided. You ll also need to enter your UK mobile phone number at this stage, so we can verify that your business is based in Britain. We won t use your mobile number for any other purpose, and you can enter a different number for your business phone. CHOOSE A WEB ADDRESS SEARCH If your first choice is no longer available, you can either select an alternative from the list or search for a different name. Step 2: The small print Once you ve read through, click continue on the next three screens to progress through the notifications and agree to the terms and conditions. Step 4: Verify your mobile number You ll quickly receive a text message with a confirmation PIN. Simply enter it in the space provided then click continue. 9 9 Step 5: Customise your website This is the fun part. Choose from our selection of designer templates to alter the appearance of your website. Then click continue to enter information about your business. Get your business online for free This is where your earlier preparation pays off. Enter your product details, location, opening hours, and contact details. Remember, short is sweet people tend to skim read websites, so only tell the reader what they need to know. You can always come back and make changes later. Step 6: Tell the world Click publish. New customers will now be able to find your business through Google and other Internet search engines! But to make sure your site makes a real impact, add your new web address to your business card, signature, company vehicle, and anywhere else your business name appears. That s why it s really important to make sure that your site is well organised and clearly identifiable by Google and other search engines.
