1 Graphics Standards Manual January 2015 This manual will provide employees, students, parents and vendors with the ability to maintain the school s graphic identity through easy-to-read guidelines. These guidelines will be used for all applications: print, web and advertising specialties. The graphic identity of Canterbury School (logos, seal and mascot artwork) will remain consistent through the use of this manual. A consistent look and feel reinforces Canterbury School s image as a top school in Florida and enables the professional presentation of all materials. The school logo came into use in 1995 and has been the branding mark since that time. The seal was created in 2005 and is used on formal printed materials. The school logo was updated in 2013 by Cherry & Co. The cougar mascot logo is used for athletics, and the cougar paw print is used on school store products and adds a playful touch to mainly Lower School printed pieces. The Strategic Communications Office at Canterbury will answer any questions about the manual and the use of logos and other identifying art. 2 The Canterbury School Master Logo The logo consists of three parts: the flame, the wordmark and the four pillars. The flame is forward moving, signifying the never-ending pursuit of knowledge. The four words (Education, Character, Leadership and Service) reinforce our Mission Statement: The Canterbury School is dedicated to academic excellence within a caring and supportive community emphasizing character, leadership and service. Master Logo Usage The logo must never be broken apart. The wordmark (Canterbury School) may never be displayed as a logo without the flame and the four pillars. The flame may be displayed alone without any changes to its proportion. Since the master logo is the common thread throughout School communications, it should be your starting point in the creation of all marketing materials. Deliberate, consistent placement of the logo will establish the School s name and institutional credence without distraction from the message. There are very specific guidelines regarding the use of the master logo. The logo must be present on all school communications. As the primary graphic identity for the institution, the master logo must appear on all communications, including brochures, stationery, business cards, programs and the School website. Treat the logo as artwork, not as typography. The master logo is the School s single most important visual element and should be treated as a graphic icon. Never manipulate the logo in any way. This rule includes but is not restricted to type, rules, surrounding boxes, shadows, outlines and embellishments. Do not create secondary (sub) logos to represent a division, club or group, as this is confusing to audiences and dilutes the goal of creating a common, mutually reinforcing image. The Canterbury Logo may be used in any size greater than or equal to one and one half inches in width and must remain in proportion. There are two versions of the Canterbury logo, one line and stacked. Either version may be used as appropriate and suitable to the document.

3 The Canterbury School Master Logo One Line Stacked

4 Canterbury Master Logo Placement Balance is an essential feature of good design. Graphics, imagery and text must all be balanced on the page so that each is able to speak clearly. Placing any element too close to the master logo diminishes its importance. Give the logo its own space. A clear zone equal to the height of the letter C around the logo will give it the room it needs to stand out. Place the master logo on the front cover of all printed promotional collateral materials intended for external audiences (prospective students, parents, etc.) C C C Do place the logo on contrasting values (preferably white).

5 Canterbury Master Logo Color The Canterbury logo is expressed in PMS It may also be printed in black and reversed in white. Canterbury Color Palette Canterbury s primary color is PMS If PMS 7694 cannot be reproduced, then CMYK 100/57/9/52 may be used. Secondary colors are often used in formally designed pieces. The secondary colors are also listed below. 6 Color Bar The color bar is primarily used as a design accent for printed materials or as a division between the Canterbury one line logo and text or pictures. The color bar may be used in color or grayscale, however, must stay in proportion and the colors must stay in the same order. This is the correct proportion and order of colors of the color bar: This is the correct grayscale render of the color bar. 7 Color Bar Usage When placing the color bar beneath the Canterbury School logo, white space must be allowed between the logo and the color bar equal to the height of the C in Canterbury. Example of Master Logo and Color Bar Usage GRANDPARENTS GRANDFRIENDS Days 2014

8 Canterbury School Secondary Torch Logo The torch logo has become synonomous with Canterbury School and may stand on its own. This logo may be printed using PMS 7694, black or reversed in white and it must remain proportional. If PMS 7694 cannot be reproduced, then CMYK 100/57/9/52 may be used. The torch may also be placed in the background of documents as a transparancy. However, a transparancy of at least 15% or greater must be used. 9 Canterbury School Secondary Cougar Paw Logo The cougar paw print is used on school store products and adds a playful touch to mainly Lower School printed pieces. It should not be used in place of the Canterbury School logo. It is expressed in PMS It can also be printed in black and reversed in white. If PMS 7694 cannot be reproduced, then CMYK 100/57/9/52 may be used. Correct Uses of the Cougar Paw Logo Incorrect Uses of the Cougar Paw Logo Canterbury School Seal The Canterbury School seal is used for only the most formal occasions, appearing on School diplomas, formal invitations, and ceremonial documents deemed appropriate by the Head of School. It is may not be used as a graphic element without permission from the Office of Strategic Communications (x205). The seal was updated in the summer of 2013 to include the words, Founded in 1964 in preparation for the school s 50th anniversary.

10 Canterbury School Tagline The Canterbury School tagline may be used as needed in conjunction with the School logo. The tagline may be placed over a picture, but not over other text. 20% black 100% black 20% black Athletics Logos This logo should not be used in place of the Canterbury School logo. Contact the Office of Strategic Communications (x205) for assistance in determining when it is appropriate to use an alternate logo. Do not attempt to recreate this logo.

11 Character Icons The Character Icons may be used individually or as a group to emphasize and reinforce our Mission Statement: The Canterbury School is dedicated to academic excellence within a caring and supportive community emphasizing character, leadership and service. EDUCATION Social Media Icons The Social Media Icons should be used as frequently as possible on printed and electronic materials to promote the Canterbury School social media presence. All five icons do not need to be used simultaneously, however, the minimum recommendation is the use of at least the Facebook icon, the Twitter Icon and the Instagram Icon. Alumni

12 Canterbury Fund Logo The Canterbury Fund Logo may only be used with the permission of the Director of Development (x231). It may only be used in conjunction with approved Canterbury Fund solicitation materials. The Canterbury Fund logo must be used in conjunction with the Canterbury School logo placed somewhere clearly on the same document. The color logo uses Canterbury s primary color, PMS If PMS 7694 cannot be reproduced, then CMYK 100/57/9/52 may be used. The word FUND uses Canterbury s secondary color, Cobalt, which is CMYK 90/40/0/0. 50th Anniversary Logo The Canterbury School 50th Anniversary Logo was created to celebrate Canterbury s 50th year as an educational institution. The Canterbury School 50th Anniversary Logo may stand on its own without the use of the Canterbury School logo. This logo retires in June 2014.

13 Font Canterbury School documents are supported by two font styles. Helvetica Neue is used for headline, subheadline and callout text. If Helvetica Neue is not available, then Arial is an acceptable substitute. Goudy Old Style is used for body text. 14 Business Card Specifications The Canterbury School business card design is clean and professional. The Canterbury logo is expressed as reversed to white on PMS The text on the botton half of the card is printed in PMS 7694 using the fonts Helvetica Neue Condensed and Helvetica Neue Bold Condensed. Employee Name and Title may be Printed in Helvetica Neue, Arial or Goudy Old Style.
