4 Main Activities related to the Space[1/2] Page 4 Main on-going and finished activities of in the field o wireless telecommunications applied to space: Page 4 SORGENS (SOftware defined Radio GEnerator for Navigation Signals) contract by Agenzia Spaziale Italiana ASI, Italy, with Thales Alenia Space - Vimodrone, (Italy), University of Pisa, (Italy), and SkyTech S.r.l. (Italy) ( ). SORGENS is a research project launched by the Italian Space Agency (ASI - Agenzia Spaziale Italiana) to come to a proof-of-concept innovative payload to be used aboard satellites of current navigation systems (e.g., GPS, EGNOS), future navigation systems (e.g., Galileo, Modernized GPS, GPS II) and communication missions (DVB-S, Skyplex) as well. As its name suggests, the main innovation in the SORGENS payload lies in the full re-programmability of the signal generator by virtue of a Software Defined Radio (SDR) approach. The main applications of SORGENS can be split in two separate categories: space-based applications (navigation and/or telecommunication payload, extra-terrestrial GNSS, formation flying and space-vehicles relative navigation, testing of new GNSS signals) and ground-based ones (LAAS, navigation with poor satellite visibility, SoL applications, testing of new ground-based signals). SWAN (SoftWare systems for Applications of Navigation) contract by Agenzia Spaziale Italiana ASI (Italy), with Thales Alenia Space - Vimodrone (Italy), CNIT (Italy), Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB) (Italy), Intecs S.p.A. (Italy), Carlo Gavazzi Space (Italy), IACSA (Italy), ProWare (Italy), ( ). The main aim of this project is to promote the development of a -generation SDR-based GNSS receivers for current (GPS, EGNOS), forthcoming (Galileo) and future (e.g., signals with band limited chip pulse) GNSS signal formats, characterized by innovative architecture, algorithms and SW modules, in order to design and implement a base model receiver able to exploit integration with other technologies (e.g., MEMS) and hybridization (e.g., A-GSP, SISNeT) with other positioning systems. ADVISE (ADVanced signal-in-space Techniques) contract by European Space Agency ESA, with UFAF, Monaco di Baviera, Germany, ENAC, Italian Civil Aviation Authority, Italy, JR, Graz, Austria. (2010). The main aim of this project is the detection and the definition of new modulation schemes providing excellent synchronization performance in realistic propagation channels and data delivery techniques for navigation in order to overcome the shortcomings and limitations of current GNSS signals.

The aim of this project is the design of satellite system for regional positioning in the S-band. HDRL (Advanced Techniques for High Data Rate Links for Earth Exploration Satellites) contract by European Space Agency ESA, with Thales-Alenia-Space, Italy, Politecnico di Milano, Italy, Politecnico di Torino, Italy. The aim of this project is the development of a system for high data rate transmission in satellite applications. In particular, is involved in the study of new pre-distortion techniques. E-SSA (Enhancement Spread Spectrum Aloha Random Access) contract by Eutelsat S.A. Parigi, F, with MBI, Pisa, Italy. The aim of this project is the provision of fully software S-Band testbed modulator, software demodulator components, radio frequency frontend integration and algorithm design for EUTELSAT's generation S-Band services experimental early deployment. PEGASUS (Platform of Enhanced GNSS receiver for Application in Sol User Segment) contract by Agenzia Spaziale Italiana-ASI, Italy, with Thale Alenia Space, Vimodrome, italy, Istituto Mario Boella (ISMB) Turin, Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Intecs S.p.a., Italy, Ingegneria dei Sistemi (IDS), Pisa, Consorzio Pisa Ricerche (CPR), Pisa, Electromagnetic Activities Center (EMAC), Florence and ewings Bologna. The aim of this project is the SW implementation and testing of a data fusion algorithm for MEMS and GNSS data in Tightly - Coupled configuration. DTA (Dual Tracking Antenna) contract by European Space Agency-ESA, with Thales Alenia Space, Vimodrone, Italy and Ingeneria dei Sistemi (IDS), Pisa. The aim of this project is the investigation of a signal processing algorithms for interference and multipath mitigation and data fusion for dual antenna GNSS receiver.
