4 What does it look like? Dedicated Personal Navigation Device With: Large colour touch screen Loud speaker capable of being heard in a vehicle environment Integral battery power that is easy to recharge for use out of the vehicle GNSS receiver for accurate positioning Remote internet access for tracking and emergency call service

5 Barrier-free Personal Navigation Provides you with barrier free navigation and a route based on your disability: Pre-loaded with certain barrier information (stairs, ramps etc.) Select which barriers you wish to avoid Routes along paved areas only Shows disabled access points of interest along the route Simple visual mapping with easy to follow waypoints

6 In-Car Navigation All the features of a regular car navigation system including voice turn-by-turn instructions, route planning etc. but will also include specific information to support a disabled person: On-street Blue Badge and Red Route parking bays Disabled access car parks On-street parking rules

7 Carer Alert In an emergency, the user presses a button, depicting the type of assistance they require and the user terminal automatically sends a communication to the Service Centre that an emergency button has been pressed and the Service Centre then generates an SMS text message to predefined telephone numbers (say a relative or carer) notifying them that the user needs assistance. Simple one touch carer alert Important information such as location, emergency type etc. is automatically sent to our Service Centre

9 INCLUSION exploitable in UK Wheelchair User with Assistance The key services in the venue are accessible to a wheelchair user. However assistance may be required to overcome features such as heavy doors or moderate ramps. Mobility Impaired Walker This is awarded to a venue where at the entrance to the building there are no more than three medium steps. If there is more than one step a handrail must be provided. Internal level changes can be overcome by moderate/easy ramps and/or lifts. Disability Awareness Training The service provider has informed a DisabledGo Surveyor that they provide Disability Awareness Training for their staff.

10 The role of innovative GNSS All previous research projects dealing with navigation for disabled people have suffered the use of GPS stand-alone for the user positioning. Taken from the Final Report of a Research Project: Having a device so heavily reliant on GPS it can be frustrating as the strength of signal cannot be guaranteed. If signal is very poor then it can be impossible to run the software effectively.

11 The role of innovative GNSS Personal Navigation Devices have miniaturized low-cost and low-power GPS modules and antennas with generally bad accuracy 15 meters. Thales Alenia Space Italia, European leader in satellite solutions, has developed an innovative solution allowing the enhancement of low-cost GPS devices positioning accuracy by using the innovative European Infrastructure EGNOS/EDAS.

18 INCLUSION Project Main Conclusions Data remains the key issue, as already identified during the INCLUSION Seminar in July For the moment, not all relevant information is available; there are many types of barriers for people with motor impairments. Harmonization of information in this domain is highly needed at EU and potential global level. This could come from standardization initiatives, especially when it comes to the infrastructure (agreement on the type of information to be published on road and off-the-road infrastructures, on the format in which this information should be provided ). There are great expectations towards European Institutions in this respect, as the data issue can only be solved at transnational level. The issue of data concerns both the destination and the potential barriers to be found on the way to the destination (i.e. accessible Points of Interest and relevant information about potential barriers: steps, drop kerbs, elevators, etc.)

19 Inclusion Project Main Conclusions The use of EGNOS/EDAS data has shown that differential corrections allow to obtain a certain improvement in accuracy (RMS error) both in stationing and walking sessions. The mean augmentation has been around 20% with respect to the GPS stand-alone with a maximum 50% of improvement in static session. This performances enhancement degrades in urban area scenarios where positioning errors are mainly due to multi-path and GPS satellite availability. With the existing GPS and the launching of Galileo there will be two satellite navigation systems in the future. So it can be expected that the performance of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) will be greatly improved, especially in urban environments. in terms of availability, coverage, accuracy and continuity.

20 Next Opportunities INCLUSION will be at the Disability Awareness Day on next 15 July 2012 in UK Disability Awareness Day (DAD), is Europe's largest 'not for profit' voluntary-led disability exhibition, and is held annually in a huge tented village within the grounds of Walton Hall Gardens. Over 250 exhibitors. INCLUSION Consortium is in contact with MAPABILITY for the exploitation of the solution also in Italy
