5 ATOM scenario The problem addressed by ATOM project is the airport security. ATOM works in the airport area in order to increase the aviation security exploiting a better control and monitoring of people inside the airport. The main limits of the conventional security are: control only the entrance in the gate area through the metal detector need the collaboration of the passengers control only the passengers and personnel trespassing the gate area are not able to track people carrying dangerous tools are not full interconnected with the command and control The main advantage of ATOM respect to conventional are: the control of the all airport area (including public and sterile area) does not need the passenger collaboration the capacity to identify the dangerous tools and to provide its tracks to the operator in order to facilitate the counteraction the capacity to be not easily disturbed or put out of order The interaction with the existing security

8 ATOM s: W band detection Radar technology exploited to provide an electromagnetic image (SAR approach) of under control person. 12 ATOM s: data management The data management block receives inputs from sensors and collaborative people (such as security men, operators, etc.) and provides data useful for security operators to provide the situation assessment and to localize suspicious people. The data management activities are: Fusion of data from different detection s; Definition of alarm level on the basis of sensor outputs; To trigger the tracking ; Fusion the data from the different tracking s; to provide support to decision to the security operator; Interface with the security operator To provide to the security operators the information useful to intercept and stop the suspicious person (position, type of suspicious tools, alarm level, position of the other security operators, etc.)

13 Communication Network in ATOM Architecture The dedicated network has to distribute the right information among sub-s and to the operators. 14 Future works The further activities regards: Development of a multistatic W-band radar able to detect person carrying-on suspicious object walking in front of the sensors; Development of automated algorithm for shape-based detection of dangerous objects in free space; Development of a prototypal receiver for experimental indoor signal measurements using WiFi transmissions as signal of opportunity; Development of a prototypal active radar network; Integration of a reduced version of ATOM for demonstration inside airport area.

15 Expected results The expected results of the ATOM project is the development of a simple demonstrator able to show a new concept for the security inside the airport able to: Extend the coverage of airport security including public area; Improve the type of suspicious detectable objects (not only metallic object); To provide to the security operator a decision support (including automatic detection of suspicious tools); Provide to the operators the data able to intercept and stop suspicious person; Increase the airport efficiency without reducing security level; Increase the security of all aviation.
