Fiber Optic Communications Equipment Provides Backhaul Infrastructure for Critical Satellite Based Continuity of Communications Solutions: IRIDUIM, INMARSAT, GEO SATCOM Microwave Photonic Systems Inc. Joshua L. Korson & Richard J. Stewart The ever present threats from terrorism and natural disasters have brought to the forefront a renewed focus on emergency backup communications strategies and solutions for federal, state, and commercial enterprises. Otherwise known as Continuity Of Communications, organizations worldwide are instituting initiatives to seek and develop the means by which to achieve rapidly deployable and robust systems in support of Infrastructure Security, Disaster Relief and Emergency Preparedness. These initiatives have yielded requirements that have been derived into a solution set of optical fiber communication system technologies which are now being deployed to provide a non-terrestrial based back-up communications capability. Microwave Photonic Systems (MPS) has been at the vanguard of the engineering development and deployment of RF Photonic Communication Systems for more than 15 years. MPS s dedicated research, design and manufacturing team has leveraged its expertise to develop robust commercial communication products that are immediately available to meet the needs of the global community for continued Continuity of Communications. MPS s complement of RF, Microwave and Fiber Optic products stand ready for incorporation within temporary disaster recovery networks or for prepositioning within communication contingency network architectures.
RF PHOTONIC INTERFACILITY LINKS (IFL) The increasing proliferation and reliance on RF systems has necessitated the need for robust, secure, and distributed network topologies. As a result, Systems Engineers and Network Architects are incorporating optical fiber cabling in lieu of coaxial cables or waveguides within major communication infrastructures. This reliance of fiber optics is steadily gaining acceptance into both the civilian and defense markets as the preferred method of critical communications transport. A RF Photonic Antenna Interfacility Link (IFL) is a specialized transmission subsystem designed to support the optical signal conversion, transport and distribution of Radio Frequency (RF) signals over distances in excess of 80 km. The IFL provides a high dynamic range, low noise bi-directional transport capability to remote RF Radio Transceiver Uplink (UL) and Downlink (DL) signals between the radio transceiver(s) and antenna(s), well beyond the limits of conventional coaxial cable. The characteristics of the fiber optic IFL have been designed to seamlessly replace a copper based coaxial IFL and provide primary and redundant backup capability to the high priority RF channels.
OPERATIONAL ADVANTAGES First Responders and Disaster Relief Agencies require communication suites that are deployable worldwide, highly reliable, field rugged, and user configurable in the operational arena. The use of MPS technologies provides End Users with the ability to minimize communication restoration response time. The characteristics of deployable Fiber Optic Interfacility Links (IFL) provide the following operational advantages: Rapidly Deployable & Robust : Reduced Size, Weight and Volume for Transport (SWaP) Provides Broad Band RF Transmission of Frequencies: VHF, UHF, L-Band, S, C, X-Band, Ku-Band Available System Architectures: IRIDIUM, INMARSAT, GBS, Long Term Evolution (LTE) Supports Distributed Network Topologies: Mine & Tunnel Complexes, Maritime Vessels, C4ISR Centers Enhanced Isolation / Immunity: Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) & Interference (EMI)
PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: ISAT-7700 SATELLITE TELEPHONE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM The ISAT-7700, Satellite Telephone Fiber Optic Transmission System, provides a novel Time Domain Duplex (TDD) / Frequency Domain Duplex (FDD) RF design approach to achieve the operational requirement of providing expanded continuity of critical communications network traffic using satellite telephones. The ISAT-7700 utilizes proprietary and field proven Radio Frequency and Fiber Optic technology to transmit and receive the full spectrum of satellite telephone uplink and downlink signal traffic. The signals are transported up to 10 km using military / industrial grade, multi-strand, single mode fiber optic interfacility cable terminated with harsh environment optical interconnects. This approach provides the ability to securely route and distribute satellite signal traffic to mounted antenna locations throughout the operational arena, thereby expanding the communications network infrastructure well beyond the limitations of conventional coaxial based deployment schemes. An additional benefit provided by this increased separation distance is the ability to have reliable communications in the operational arena regardless of geographic terrain, horizon visibility or urban infrastructure obstacles. Finally, the optical cabling is a non-metallic signal conductor and hence inherently immune to the effects of Radio Frequency Interference, Electromagnetic Interference, and Lightening Strikes. The ISAT-7700 can be integrated into architectures requiring Point-To-Point or Point-To-Multi-Point topologies supporting both single and multiple user augmentations found within structures, maritime vessels and tunnel complexes. The ISAT-7700 is operationally compatible with both encrypted and non-encrypted software enabled satellite telephones. The ISAT-7700 has user defined operational frequencies between 1610 MHz to MHz for TDD, or MHz to & to MHz for FDD, and has an available GPS option to provide L1 ( MHz) for time reference receivers or L1 & L2 ( MHz) for precision navigation. The ISAT-7700 can be packaged to support a wide range of market segments to include: Outdoor Harsh Environments and Commercial Telecom grade. A ruggedized version for worldwide deployment is available in stackable shock mounted transit cases; an ideal packaging option to support temporary emergency response scenarios.
Conclusion The technological maturation and commercialization of RF Photonics have yielded a new and robust generation of fiber optic communication components, interconnects, and active devices that are cost effective, offer improved RF performance characteristics, and are capable of worldwide deployment. While many subcomponent manufacturers exist, Prime Systems Decision Makers must call upon skilled outside resources to ensure operational requirements are met within the desired cost and schedule limitations. MPS fulfills the role of Systems Engineering Integrator with responsibilities of exercising design due diligence, decomposition of essential requirements, precision manufacturing and complete life cycle support in the installation, site commissioning, and operational training. MPS, a global provider of critical RF Photonic transport systems, is a proven Trusted Agent for ensuring programmatic success in critical emergency and disaster preparedness activities supporting Communications of Continuity objectives.
