1 Domain Hosting A Becta (school name) domain such as greycourt.richmond.sch.uk once registered must be hosted if it is to be available to users on the Internet. The host is in effect the manager and ultimate source of information about the domain. The host keeps records containing addresses of website and mail servers for the domain. These records are propagated across the Internet and local copies of them are used whenever an Internet user wishes to navigate to a website in the domain or to send to a user in the domain. Until recently LBRuT schools have had their domains hosted by Atomwide. As of 17 th February 2006, at the latest, all LBRuT Becta domains were transferred to Synetrix. Initially the domains are transferred unchanged. See Figures 1, 2 and 3. School Web Sites All LBRuT school websites are named in accordance with the following convention: (e.g., Most LBRuT websites were hosted by Atomwide. A few schools have had their websites hosted by 3 rd parties for example organisations that provide a package of services including website design, implementation and hosting. These schools can carry on as in the past because the domain records will still contain the address of their 3 rd party web server. See Figure 4. After the switchover to LGfL broadband services, LBRuT school websites may be hosted by LGfL in one of two ways (or a combination of both): 1. In the Digitalbrain portal, 2. By Synetrix. The Digitalbrain portal offers some advantages for curriculum use of web pages in that it allows editing from within the LGfL portal without the use of any other web authoring tool, but the WebDAV utility for uploading pages is currently slow to use. Schools with larger websites have, therefore, been advised to host their web site with Synetrix.

2 When schools have uploaded their web sites to the Digitalbrain portal or Synetrix web site hosting and tested them, a request can be made to update the domain record to make the new web site live. See Figure 5. School Up until recently, LBRuT schools had two types of , both of which were hosted by Atomwide: 1. Becta style eg info@<schoolname>.richmond.sch.uk 2. Richmond Grid for Learning eg user_id@rgfl.org.uk In addition, a few secondary schools have hosted their own accounts using a MS Outlook Exchange server. After the switchover to LGfL broadband services, schools will still have two types of one using the same style of account naming and one using a slightly different style of account naming: 1. Becta style e.g., info@<schoolname>.richmond.sch.uk hosted by Synetrix and accessed at webmail.<school>.richmond.sch.uk 2. London Grid for Learning e.g., user_id@<schoolname>.richmond.lgfl.net hosted by Digitalbrain and accessed via the drop-down menus within the LGfL/Digitalbrain portal (by logging in with the user name user_id.<schoolname>.richmond.lgfl and the assigned password). Becta Style The Becta style accounts in Atomwide may be real accounts or they may be aliases (i.e., rules that automatically forward all traffic to assigned RGfL or other accounts). All of these accounts will be created as real accounts and the domain records updated over the spring half term. Because the Atomwide and Synetrix accounts have the same domain name, only one account can be live to other Internet users at a time. Before the spring half term, the Atomwide accounts will be live. The domain records will be updated over the spring half term and from then on the Synetrix accounts will be live. Users must start using the Synetrix accounts immediately after half term. There are two types of forwarding that might be used on these accounts.

3 1. The Atomwide accounts (if real accounts), will still be available but they will not receive any more mail. Existing mail box contents can be sent on to the new mail box ie manually forwarded. When this is done, users can stop accessing the Becta style accounts provided by Atomwide. 2. Automatic forwarding can be set up from the new Synetrix accounts accessed at webmail.<school>.richmond.sch.uk to other accounts if for example should always be forwarded to See Figure 7. RGfL / LGfL LGfL accounts are being created by schools. The RGfL and LGfL accounts have different domain names and can therefore both be live to other Internet users at the same time. (Up to the end of March when the contract for Atomwide services comes to an end.) There are two types of forwarding that might be used on these accounts. 1. The Atomwide accounts, will still be available and can continue to receive mail. Existing mail box contents can be sent on to the equivalent LGfL account ie manually forwarded. 2. Automatic forwarding can be set up from the existing RGfL account to the equivalent LGfL account. When this is done, the user can stop using the RGfL account. See Figure 7.
