2 Welcome to maestros! What s on offer at Soundstage? his is the place to come, play and learn about the popular music you enjoy. Whether you are a drummer, guitarist, keyboard player, singer or fledgling songwriter you will receive the best advice and ongoing guidance on how to develop your craft. We will be offering courses and workshops in song writing, performance, use of technology including some music production courses. 3 he SOUNDSAGE team L eading the workshops this year will be a number of professional session musicians with a proven track record. Maria brashier M aria started writing songs aged 13, moving on to the Academy of Contemporary Music to study vocals where she graduated with a first class honours degree in Professional Music Performance. Her own progressive rock funk band, Indigo Rose, was formed at college, toured independently and recorded their original material. Maria is a session vocalist for studio projects and continues to write and has an EP in the pipeline. Dale Davis D ale is a professional bass player and MD (musical director) who has performed with many artists of note, including the late Amy Winehouse, Jamiroquai, ina urner and Mark Ronson. He has played on both the Frank and Back to Black Albums and ours and is a regular on the session scene. Wendon Davis W endon is a professional guitarist, percussionist and singer and who has also worked with Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Edwyn Collins, Matt Bianco and Sophie Delila, amongst many others. Joe Hurst J oe is Head of Popular and Contemporary Music at Maestros but prior to taking on this role had worked as a session guitarist, singer and MD. Joe has played for artists such as Womack & Womack, Chaka Khan, Sophie Delila, eish O Day and the Lucinda Belle Orchestra. He is also an experienced guitar tutor and educator. Craig utton C raig is a Percussion utor at Berkshire Maestros and is currently the course leader for Music echnology at Soundstage. He has played professionally for nearly 10 years and shared stages with acts such as Meat Loaf, he Beach Boys, Biffy Clyro and Seasick Steve. He is also a sound engineer and producer, and highly experienced and trained in live and studio production techniques. Craig currently endorses Pellwood Drumsticks. Martin Whalley M artin learnt snare drum in a marching band aged 11, switching to guitar at 16. He went on to play in a number of Heavy Metal bands and appeared on a number of bills performing alongside Marshall Law, Excalibur and British Heavy Metal gods Saxon amongst others. Martin is an experienced education practitioneer for both electric and bass guitar and has also spent a number of years teaching and studying classical guitar. Martin is also a personal trainer and sports nutritionist and these skills have helped him motivate and encourage young people to discover their full potential.
4 Buy In Loop station skills Delivered by Joe Hurst Half day session 150 Whole day session 300 What is a loop station? A loop station is a device designed to record a performance between two set points and then repeat this phrase continuously. Once the phrase is recorded multiple parts can be overdubbed on top to create complex layers of sound. A student s inherent musicality is often undiscovered on an instrument. A loop station allows ideas to be recorded, listened to, appraised, undone and redone multiple times using a wide range of instruments in very simple ways. his leads to the development of a creative process that would otherwise have had no outlet. his is especially relevant in the case of pupils who have had no access to or interest in traditional or formal instrumental lessons What will be covered? I will offer live examples of how this works and demonstrate how this technology can be used to good effect. I will include: Basic music theory Composition and arrangement eaching improvisation Small group /whole class activities GCSE coursework :
5 Buy In Beatboxing sessions Delivered by Joe Hurst Half day session 150 Whole day session 300 B eatboxing is the art of producing beats and rhythm using the mouth, tongue, lips and voice. Some singing and emulation of other sounds (such as turntables and bass lines) are then used to make music. he course: O n this course we can include the use of loop stations so the students have the opportunity to record the compositions they create and enjoy the benefits of working in a fresh, flexible and exciting way. his course is aimed at KS3 but can easily be adapted or extended to work across a wider age group. he half day course will cover the basics and allow your students to use beatboxing as an element in their compostion work at a beginner/intermediate level. he full day course will cover all of the aspects mentioned above and will allow your students to develop skills and confidence using beatboxing techniques in composition and performance. hey will also learn to notate their work and be introduced to the more advanced techniques of singing and beatboxing simultaneously. What will be covered? Brief history of beatboxing How to make basic sounds Rhythm and time keeping Composing beats and looking at song structure An overview of SBN (standard beatboxing notation) Singing and some vocal techniques ime signatures :
6 Buy In COMPOSIION & analysis Delivered by Joe Hurst Half day session 150 Whole day session 300 Delivered by Joe and professional colleagues One day session 600 per day wo days 1100 he s course: tudents will learn about specific musical devices commonly used in song writing through reinterpreting current popular pieces. What will be covered? S tudents will begin with the technical and theoretical aspects of the chosen repertoire eg: chords arrangements time signature style O nce the students are technically able to play the basics to a sufficient standard we will introduce a number of songs that are all built on the same chord progressions. With professional guidance students will learn how to use specific musical devices to create their own original mash up based on two selected pieces. hey will look at: style and genre instrumentation rhythm, tempo and metre dynamics arrangements superimposition B y the end of the session students will have a clear understanding of how to use the above techniques in order to create their own original compositions. :

We will be encouraging students to take current popular repertoire and use particular music devices to find their own voice technically and artistically and create something completely original. he course objective is to instil the key skills required to work successfully in a band situation. hroughout the day we will be assessing and guiding your students with a view to developing their general sense of musicality and their ability to communicate with other musicians. What will be covered? technical ability on their instrument of choice song arrangements instrumentation choices dynamics changes of style and genre use of technology such as Loop Stations and Guitar Effects communication and interpersonal skills. :
8 SUMMER Workshop BAND sessions Venue: Stoneham Court, Cockney Hill, ilehurst, Reading, RG30 4EZ Dates: 27, 28, 29 August 2014 imes: 10:00am 4:00pm Course fee: 75 per person (payable in full at the time of application) Bring your own packed lunch Led by Joe Hurst, Dale Davis and Wendon Davis his three day band workshop is open to all instrumentalists and singers. We will be covering popular and well known songs from artists such as Amy Winehouse to Ed Sheeran and Lorde. J oining Joe to lead the workshops are professional session musicians, Dale Davis and Wendon Davis. It is set to be an exciting three days. he course objective is to instil the key skills required to work successfully in a band situation. hroughout the day we will be assessing and guiding your students with a view to developing their general sense of musicality and their ability to communicate with other musicians. :
9 SUMMER Workshop Electric Guitar Construction Course What better way to understand your instrument than to build one! W e are offering the opportunity to construct a Strat, ele or P-Bass from kit form under the watchful eye of Master Luthier, Graham Noden, on a specialist three day course. G raham has run the guitar repair and construction workshop from the world famous Denmark St workshop for over thirty years. He has repaired and built guitars for numerous famous musicians from Eric Clapton to Prince and Gary Moore to he Beatles to name just a few. :
10 SUMMER Workshop Music ech course Course leader: Craig utton Venue: Kennet School, Stoney Lane, hatcham, RG19 4LL Dates: 7 & 8 August 2014 tbc imes: 10:00am 4:00pm Course fee: 60per person (payable in full at the time of application) Bring your own packed lunch Foundation Music Production Course he aim of this course is to offer participants the chance to learn the basics of Music echnology Software over a 2 day course in a fully equipped production suite. he participants will learn to use the programme Cubase, attaining key skills in composing and mixing techniques. By using high quality samples and virtual instruments, participants will leave the course with a self-produced MP3 audio track of their work. he course is designed to be fully accessible to anyone aged 14+ with an interest in music technology and sound production. It will be an ideal introduction for anyone taking GCSE, A-level or B-ec Music courses especially those starting in September. Equally this should appeal to those wishing to explore music technology for pleasure. P articipants will be given the chance to compose in different genres of music and ultimately given the freedom as to how they want their piece to sound in the end. hroughout the day the tutor will be aiding and advising everyone on how to structure, mix and produce their work. Participants will be given various opportunities to showcase their new found skills to the group as the session evolves. Key areas will cover: setting yourself up a new Cubase Project understanding bars, time signatures and tempo learning how to create and effectively use drum loops use samples and virtual instruments to create original work understanding different musical styles and how instruments communicate within them using tools and minor effects to personalise the track cutting, looping and fading techniques developing key skills in panning : and dynamics exporting tracks to MP3
