Keep Cool We Care
Fresher at the destination Our reefer containers provide environmentally friendly technology, reliable temperatures as low as 35 C/ 31 F and a variety of precise controlling alternatives for all special requirements. Hapag- Lloyd operates a container fleet of more than one million TEU in total, among them various special equipment types and one of the most modern refrigerated container fleets in the field. Careful servicing and inspections before every assignment are just as natural as continual research projects looking into further improving future generations of refrigerated containers. This protects both the environment and your cargo. Many years experience, modern equipment and a highly integrated global network of around 90 liner services with competitive transit times make Hapag-Lloyd your premium partner for temperature-sensitive goods. 2 3
4 Your Advantages at a Glance:
Especially cold Hapag-Lloyd refrigerated containers can maintain a constant temperature between 35 C/ 31 F and 30 C/86 F, even with outside temperatures up to 50 C/122 F the refrigerated container technology allows to keep your cargo fresh and deliver best quality to the destination. You will find the optimal transport temperature for your product from page 12 onwards. Especially well ventilated For certain goods, such as fresh fruit or ferns, a precisely controlled ventilation system contributes decisively to quality assurance. In Hapag-Lloyd refrigerated containers up to 280 m 3 of fresh air per hour can be automatically supplied. The ventilation flaps can be opened with up to a 72-hour time delay, an important advantage when the cargo is not sufficiently cooled in advance. Especially precise Especially dry With some fruit, such as bananas, the slightest temperature deviations are decisive for the quality of the cargo when it reaches its final destination. Therefore, precise temperatures have the highest technical priority for us. With transportation temperatures above 10 C/14 F the refrigerated container technology allows to reduce the maximum variation to 0.5 degrees. For freezer mode, below 10 C/14 F the refrigerated container technology allows to reduce the maximum variation to one degree only. Apart from temperature our reefers can also reduce the relative humidity when set values lie between 50% and 95%. For bulbs Hapag-Lloyd reefers have a special bulb mode which automatically provides an optimal atmosphere for transportation. Especially fresh Especially gentle For controlled atmosphere we provide technologies such as AFAM+, eautofresh, Transfresh or PurFresh. The interior atmosphere is controlled so that ripening of fruit and flowers can be delayed. Spoiling and mould are suppressed. Hapag-Lloyd uses a range of technologies. We have the best solution ready for each and every cargo. You will find further information on the various technologies on page 10. Our refrigerated containers can be prograed in advance for automatic temperature change up to eight times during one voyage. This means sensitive cargo can be gently cooled in stages or the ripening process for fruit can be started before arriving at the destination. 6 7
Average Energy Consumption Hapag-Lloyd Reefer Especially environmentally friendly To protect our environment Hapag-Lloyd continually carries out research into better solutions with great success. We have reduced average energy consumption by more than 50% in the last eight years without making compromises on temperature control, but at the same time improving performance. This reduces your product s carbon footprint. Naturally, all coolant used in our reefers is CFC-free. Especially reliable High value, sensitive reefer cargo, from the pharmaceutical, chemical or healthcare industries requires particularly careful handling by an especially reliable partner. Here we offer not only our modern equipment and our extensive experience, but also special internal processes that give extra protection to your high value cargo Especially safe and secure Pull-Down-Time Especially fast cooling All data relevant to quality, such as temperature, humidity, CO 2 content and fresh air supplied, are recorded. With current technologies, Hapag-Lloyd has also successfully carried out tracking and tracing trials. The location and temperature of the refrigerated container are made available to the customers along the transport chain. Temperature (ºC) Time (Hours) Hapag-Lloyd Reefer Others Especially powerful refrigeration units assist in pre-cooling processes, in case that cargoes have not been properly pre-cooled. The considerably faster pull-down times in Hapag-Lloyd reefers facilitates higher quality of your products. Especially large payload Use of the most modern materials and refrigeration units ensure lower weight for our refrigerated containers and higher payload capacity. With Hapag-Lloyd reefers, customers profit from the highest capacities available, on average 100 to 200 kilograms more, compared to others in the field. Especially hygienic Hapag-Lloyd is the only container line to strictly segregate non-food grade boxes from reefers exclusively used for food transportation. A special interior design provides more hygienic conditions as well as optimal air circulation. Of course our boxes are checked and tested before each and every assignment. 8 9
Controlled Atmosphere How the various technologies function Thanks to the ability to change the composition of the air in a reefer and thus to control the ripening process of living cargo such as fruit or plants, the products reach their destination both considerably fresher and in better quality. Additionally, products can be transported over greater distances, enabling the opening up of new markets (see table from page 12 onwards). This makes our refrigerated containers to a cost effective alternative to airfreight. The following technologies are used: Hapag-Lloyd ExtraFresh A technology designed to control and preserve the desired transport atmosphere for fruits and vegetables. Hapag-Lloyd ExtraFresh takes advantage of the natural fruit respiration process to slow down the ripening and thus maintains cargo s quality and extends the products shelf life. Hapag-Lloyd ExtraFresh containers are equipped with Oxygen (O 2 ) and Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) sensors, membrane technology and an automatic fresh air ventilation system. The latest controlled atmosphere technology to provide the optimum transport conditions for your fruits and vegetables. AFAM+ & eautofresh With AFAM+ (Advanced Fresh Air Management) and eautofresh, the CO 2 content in the reefer container can be increased to ten percent depending on cargo, by using the ventilation flaps. This results in a delayed ripening process. Both systems are above all suitable for products that release CO 2 into the surrounding air. Transfresh & Maxtend Transfresh and Maxtend use the same principle as AFAM+ and eautofresh. However, here an individual gas mixture is actively fed into the reefer. The use of these technologies provides additional quality assurance for the product. For exporters, it means an increase to their sphere of business operations, achieving better sales potential. PurFresh Using ozone, generated from the air in the reefer, PurFresh impedes mould and decay, or bacterial damage by killing off 99% of germs in the air and on surfaces. Moreover, the concentration of the ripening gas, ethylene in the internal air is regulated, reducing the risk of premature ripening of certain fruits such as bananas. PurFresh can be combined with other technologies. 10
