1 National Leadership Symposium University of Tampa Tampa, FL July 14 17, 2014 Dear 2014 National Leadership Symposium Participant, Welcome to the 2014 National Leadership Symposium! Now in its 24th year, the symposium is a professional development experience designed for faculty members, student affairs professionals and other educators involved with promoting leadership education at colleges and universities. The University of Tampa will serve as the location for the Symposium. The enclosed information and participant packet will help you finalize your preparation. The National Leadership Symposium is designed for an intimate collegial learning environment of 50 participants. Your engagement will involve intense periods for learning in the large community, small group, and individual levels. Enclosed you will find important information concerning summer contact information and travel plans. This will assist us in staying in contact with you prior to the Symposium. The Participant Information and Travel Form should be completed online at the following link: no later than June 20. 2 Prior Preparation and Assigned Readings Given the immersive learning environment of the Symposium, it is advised that participants have significant professional experience in leadership education. In order to fully engage in the Symposium learner community, participants are expected to have read several selected readings in advance of the arriving for the NLS experience. A list to these readings will be available on a website in May. NCLP: NACA: Check-In and Departure Times Symposium check-in will take place on Monday, July 14 in Urso Residence Hall from 9:30 am 2:15 pm. You will receive your room assignment and key at this time. The Welcome will begin at 2:30 pm. Please make sure your flight arrives no later than 1:00 pm. The Symposium will end Wednesday evening, July 16; however, housing for the program is provided through Thursday, July 17 at 12 pm. Once you have made your travel arrangements, please complete and submit your Participant Information and Travel Form online or mail it to Attn: Shannon Calega, NLS Site Coordinator, Office of Student Leadership and Engagement, University of Tampa, Box P, Tampa, FL or you can to scalega@ut.edu. Air Travel Tampa is readily accessible by two Interstate highways, I-4 and I-75. The Tampa International Airport (TPA) also offers direct service to and from major destinations across the United States and is an easy 15 minute drive to the University of Tampa. Participants should not make travel arrangements until their registration is confirmed. NACA and NCLP are not responsible for travel arrangements that have been made prior to confirmation materials being sent. Shuttle Service from Airport The University of Tampa will provide complimentary shuttle service from Tampa International Airport to the Residence Hall, Urso, on University of Tampa s campus. The shuttle will run 9 am - 1 pm on Monday, and 5 am - 2 pm on Thursday. The pickup area is located outside of the terminal across from baggage claim. NLS will be on a sign in the window of the shuttle van. Shuttles will depart on the hour and half hour. You must indicate on your Participant Information and Travel Form if you would prefer the shuttle service.
3 Automobile Directions Directions to: Urso Residence Hall 404 West Kennedy Blvd, Tampa, FL Directions to the University of Tampa: From the North: I-75 South to I-275 South. Continue on I-275 to Exit 45A (Downtown East-West.) Follow signs for Downtown-West and then take the Ashley Drive/Tampa St. Exit. Stay to the right for Downtown-West, and then get in the left lane for Ashley Drive. Follow Ashley Drive to Kennedy Boulevard. Turn right on Kennedy Boulevard, crossing the Hillsborough River. Turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University. From the East: I-4 West to the I-4 and I-275 split. Exit 45A (Downtown East-West). Follow signs for Downtown-West and then take the Ashley Drive/Tampa St. Exit. Stay to the right for Downtown-West, and then get in the left lane for Ashley Drive. Follow Ashley Drive to Kennedy Boulevard. Turn right on Kennedy Boulevard, crossing the Hillsborough River. Turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University. From the South: I-75 North to Exit 256 (Crosstown Expressway). Crosstown Expressway to Exit 8 (Kennedy Boulevard/Downtown-East). Continue on Kennedy Boulevard through downtown Tampa. Cross the Hillsborough River, and then turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University. From the West: I-275 North to Exit 44 (Downtown West). Ashley Dr. South to Kennedy Boulevard. Turn right on Kennedy Boulevard, crossing the Hillsborough River. Turn right at the first light at the main entrance of the University.
4 Lodging The Symposium participants will stay in Urso Residence Hall. Each suite has a single occupancy bedroom and private bathroom. Bed linens are provided. Telephones are not provided. Internet service will be accessible via a guest account login to be assigned at check-in. Meals University of Tampa Dining Services will provide most of the Symposium meals in Ultimate Dining located in the Vaughn Student Center. Some meals will be special catered events. Any special dietary needs should have been noted on the Registration Form. Special Needs Any special needs in regard to physical challenges, dietary requirements, medication or other matters should have been noted on the Registration Form. Smoking Policy The use of tobacco products is prohibited on The University of Tampa s campus and other UT properties, except in designated smoke zones. All forms of tobacco/nicotine, including cigarettes, chew tobacco, electronic cigarettes, bidis, cigars, cigarillos, shisha and hookah, are to be confined to the four designated smoke zones. The zones are located in the following areas: Zone 1 - outside of Straz Hall near the baseball fields Zone 2 - by the river, between the Library and McKay Hall Zone 3 - near the Edison Building and Bailey Arts Studio (Large Oak Tree) Zone 4 - in Delo Park in front of Austin Hall; this zone will be in the section of the park furthest from Austin Hall. See more at: Alcohol Policy The University of Tampa adheres to Florida laws regarding alcohol sale and usage. Persons under the age of 21 may not drink alcoholic beverages. All alcoholic beverages must remain in the confines of your suite. No outside possession or consumption is allowed. Dress Dress for the Symposium is casual. Summer in Tampa is hot and humid. Bring comfortable walking shoes and clothes. The meeting rooms may be cold so bring a sweater. Participants may dress as they please during the Symposium, including shorts and T-shirts, which are appropriate dress for any Symposium program. Bring an umbrella for afternoon showers. The dress for the closing event on Wednesday is business casual.

Cancellations and Refunds Refunds for registration will be made only for requests received in writing at the NACA Office prior to June 9, 2014 (the early registration deadline). No refunds will be given for registrations after this date, however participant substitutions may be allowed if the request is submitted no later than 4 weeks prior to the start of the institute.
