3 Part 1: Course Information Course Descriptions Explores computing history, software, web technologies, basic network security, ethics, and future trends in information technology. Prerequisite Recommended math placement exam score of M0 or better, or MATH092 or higher. Familiarity with word-processing and keyboarding skills of 20 wpm. Credit for this class cannot be obtained by CLEP test Course Learning Outcomes 1. Students will identify the major theory and concepts of business across business functional areas. 2. Students will incorporate relevant quantitative and qualitative data in the analysis. 3. Students will be able to identify relevant business theories in analyzing business issues and apply appropriate theories in addressing business issues. 4. Students will be able to deliver oral presentations clearly, confidently, and in an organized format, and present their written thoughts in a coherent narrative to articulate complex ideas. Upon successfully completing this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the ability to use computers effectively in professional and personal life in the areas of: Areas Description 1. You can arrange your schedule flexibly during each week, but you MUST participate each week. You are expected to show up to class by interacting in the discussion forums a minimum of two times per week. In addition, assignments are due regularly each week. Adequate Internet access during the duration of the course is critical for your participation. To be successful, plan to spend time daily on the course. Assessment Descriptions There are 4 main components that comprise this course: 1. Weekly Discussion: We will have weekly discussion questions where students are required to respond to the initial posting from the Instructor as well as to respond to postings from fellow students. Please make sure you write these answers by conducting some research and cite both our text and external credible sources. This class is highly participative. The class instruction is collaborative and experiential rather than primary lecture. Participation credit will be earned for relevant remarks that involve posting questions; answering questions posted by your peers', sharing relevant articles you've found, or relevant information that can be shared with the class that will add to the course content. This course will become alive if you PARTICIPATE - and you become an active member of this course. Your postings in the discussion area should be substantive. Answers such as "me too" or "I agree" do not qualify as relevant, substantive participation. I am looking for your thoughts, ideas and opinions. 2. Assignment: Students are required to submit four (4) Assignments during the term on various topics discussed in class. See the course schedule on when the assignments are due. 3. Weekly Quiz: Short online quizzes of up to ten questions covering material presented in the textbook will be given in Weeks 2 through Week Final Exam: Final exam will consist of 50 multiple choice questions. The exam request form will available in Learning Hub after you have completed the assignments prior to the exam. The student must state clearly on the exam request form the professional status, job title, or any other qualifications of the supervisor that will aid the testing department in the approval process. If you are attending a college or university, you must use the testing center at that institution. A student living near the Andrews University School of Distance Education main office in Michigan must have the exams supervised at the School of Distance Education testing office. However, the exam request should be sent in ahead of time. Page 6

7 An online exam code cannot be sent to a supervisor who has the same address as the student unless the address is known to be that of a school, mission facility, etc. All college students must present photo identification to their supervisor s before taking exams. If you cannot take your exam by the deadline date, sdeexams@andrews.edu. No exam is returned to the student or supervisor. Test grades are sent to the student as soon as the exam is graded. Feedback from the instructor for midterm exams will provide information for studying for future exams. Page 7

10 Letter Grade Percentage C 73-77% C % D 60-69% F 0-59% Part 5: Course Policies Withdrawal and Incomplete Policies The current withdrawal policy can be found online at The incomplete policy is found online at Late Work Submission of papers/assignments late will necessarily result in a loss of points based on the following: 1-12 hours late = 5% reduction hours late = 10% reduction hours late = 15% reduction hours late = 20% reduction Assignments will NOT be accepted after 48 hours from the deadline. Any assignment submitted after 48 hours or not at all will receive a grade of ZERO. After teaching online classes for more than a decade, I ve heard plenty of reasons for work submitted past the due date. I offer a list to you and a response I would like for you to consider: Explanation Response I do understand that we lose Internet access My internet went out this weekend. Like, from time-to-time. Please have a Plan B. If totally out! necessary, go to a friend s house or a public location with access to the Web. My hard drive crashed! It s making weird noises! I will be away from my computer for 11 days. Far away! This has happened to me twice over the past few years, and it is no fun. I sometimes wonder why it usually happens to us when an assignment is due! If this happens to you, please borrow someone s computer to do your work. Remember to back-up your information. I recommend using a USB drive or other external device to back-up frequently. When a student mentions the exact number of days, I immediately think of a Caribbean cruise. If you plan to vacation during the time Page 10

11 I had the flu this weekend and can t think or type. I posted my assignment in Canvas, but it has since disappeared. I sent you an asking for assistance, and I am waiting to hear back before making any move. I had surgery this week, and the doctor made it clear that I needed to rest - motionless. My employer is sending me on a two-week business trip to Bogota, Colombia, and I will find it tough to get to my computer. Work is too important to me, and I cannot sacrifice my paycheck. I am going through a messy divorce, and you can imagine that school is the last thing on my mind. our class is running, please make sure to meet all requirements. Unfortunately, I cannot make exceptions on a per student basis. If you feel that the vacation or other travel plans will interfere with the class, please take the class later. I do understand that the flu can have severe complications, and can possibly affect one s cognitive and motor skills. I recommend you start early on your assignments, and thus reducing the impact of any illness. I suppose there are times when assignments do not post correctly. I recommend you make sure the assignment is posted. Please click on the drop box and make sure you see your assignment with the attachment. If you cannot see it, I cannot see it. The assignment will have a timestamp and I will use that date and time to consider the timeliness of your work. Actually, this is a good excuse impressive! In some cases, students will me on the day the assignment is due asking for assistance. Please note I will need at least 24 hours to respond to you. In addition, please note that waiting until the last day to submit your work awakens Murphy s Law. In most cases, doctors will recommend rest after a surgical procedure. If you believe the heal time will prevent you from submitting your homework on time, please make sure to call me. If you can get back on your feet quickly, we can work on a plan for you. However, if the recovery time is expected to last several weeks, we need to consider the option of re-taking the class. Please note that Incompletes are NOT allowed in this class. I certainly agree that our employment is critical to our success, and I am glad you are receiving international assignments. From my travels to Bogota, I know you can find excellent Wi-Fi access. Therefore, even when traveling to South America or anywhere else in the world, the expectations are the same. If the student feels the expectations cannot be met, I recommend re-taking the class when the situation is ideal. I certainly understand that personal situations, such as a divorce can rattle our minds. If you are unable to focus on the class requirements, please consider re-taking the class at a time when your personal life is stable. Page 11

12 Some of the excuses listed above are humorous, and others are quite serious. The point here is that we need to ensure the requirements are met for this class. When a situation is serious, such as a death in the family or an illness, please contact me and we can evaluate your case. I might recommend a plan to help you complete the class, or we might find it best to re-take the class. Maintain Professional Conduct Both in the Classroom and Online The classroom is a professional environment where academic debate and learning take place. Your instructor will make every effort to make this environment safe for you to share your opinions, ideas, and beliefs. In return, you are expected to respect the opinions, ideas, and beliefs of other students both in the face-to-face classroom and online communication. Students have the right and privilege to learn in the class, free from harassment and disruption. Netiquette In this course you will communicate with your classmates and instructor primarily in writing through the discussion forum and . "Online manners" are generally known as "netiquette." As a general rule, you should adhere to the same classroom conduct that you would "off-line" in a face-to-face course. Some examples of proper netiquette are: 1. Avoid writing messages in all capital letters. THIS IS GENERALLY UNDERSTOOD AS SHOUTING. 2. Be careful what you put in writing. Even if you are writing an message to one person, assume that anyone could read it. Though you may send an to a single person, it is very easy to forward your message to hundreds or thousands of people. 3. Grammar and spelling matter. Online courses demand the same standard of academic communication and use of grammar as face-to-face courses. 4. Never use profanity in any area of an online course. The transcripts of online course discussion forums, , and chat sessions are savable. 5. When responding to messages, only use "Reply to All" when you really intend to reply to all. 6. Avoid unkindly public criticism of others. Publicly criticizing others in an inappropriate way is known as "flaming." Consider this course a practice forum for selecting your verbiage thoughtfully and professionally. 7. Use sarcasm cautiously. In the absence of nonverbal cues such as facial expressions and voice inflections, the context for your sarcasm may be lost, and your message may thus be misinterpreted. 8. In a face-to-face setting, our tone of voice and facial expressions may convey as much of our meaning as the words we use. In a written message, the subtext of your meaning may be confused or misinterpreted. Write clearly. Use active verbs.
